How do you stop Wordpress spam
-
What's the best way to stop Wordpress spam?
We don't let comments go live without moderation, so the spammers don't succeed, however it wastes time going through the comments.
A captcha code could work but a lot of software can crack it. Are there any good captcha solutions or could something else work better/in conjunction?
Also, is there anywhere to report spam IP addresses? Not sure much happens when you mark a comment as spam in Wordpress.

the only thing comes to my mind is akismet . one of the best plugin's created for wordpress. when ever i create a new blog. the first thing i do is activate that plugin and get an api key from their website.
i have seen great results with akismet alone.

Check out http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/anti-splog
This is a free tool that we utilize in our multisite environments and it also controls sign ups (which I believe could be the choke point for your issue):
(cut from above link:)
Signup prevention– these measures are mainly to stop bots. User friendly error messages are shown to users if any of these prevent signup. They are all optional and include: Limiting the number of signups per IP per 24 hours(this can slow down human spammers too if the site clientele supports it. Probably not Edublogs though as it caters to schools which may need to make a large number of blogs from one IP)
I hope this helps

I too agree about the use of Captchas. I try and avoid the use of them myself, however if you do need to utilize this and rather not create your own, I suggest the use of ReCaptcha found here http://www.google.com/recaptcha

Hi, How are you today?
There are many ways to combat spam in WordPress. As a WordPress developer this has gotten to be a huge issue whether it's for personal blogs or clients.
Several options are available. First, I recommend signing up for Akismet found here http://akismet.com/. This has been proven to help in fighting spam, although I would still focus with other techniques as well.
Another thing you could do is utilize a third party commenting system that integrates nicely with WordPress - such as Disqus or LiveFyre. Not only do both of these system fight against spamming, they also provide greater interaction within your blog or comments. It allows users to connect using popular services such as Facebook thus creating a higher level of interaction.
Also other default WordPress methods can be found under comment moderation found here:
- Go to the Settings > Discussion panel.
- Scroll down to Comment Moderation.
You can change the number of links in comments - a great way to prevent spam, you can also add words to a spam list that your blog will then treat as spam.
Another option is Blacklisting comments. This is separate and should be treated wisely and very carefully.
For additional information about all this, check out this link from WordPress - http://codex.wordpress.org/Combating_Comment_Spam
I hope I answered your question!
Thanks

Hi,
I've always just just used the Akismet plugin for WordPress which comes with the WordPress installation. You just need to sign up for an API key. It's not perfect but does a pretty good job and is more elegant than using captcha.
Hope that helps.

Moving wordpress from one domain to another and phpmyadmin
Hi all, I have moved a site made in wordpress from a domain (domain1.com) to a different one (domain2.com). I have created a new db and I have been forced to give to it a different name, because in my cpanel mysqldatabases you can create db using only a prefixed db name structure (such as namehosting_(empty field)). So from database nama namehosting1_wp, I have forced to create namehosting1_wp, changing parameters in wp_config.php I have also forced to change db user for the same reason. I have gone to phpmyadmin to import the sql database previously exported from domain2.com. It gives to me this message: #1044 - Access denied for user 'nameuser'@'localhost' to database 'information_schema'. It seems that I have not right privileges. Or should I follow some other procedures? Thanks and ciao Bob

404 erros on wordpress blog
Both SEOMOZ and Google webmaster tools report lots of 404 errors throughout my wordpress blog. I have the url structure set to category/title Most of the 404 errors seem to be that the crawler is looking for a /home.html page. Each time I add a new post I get more 404 errors. I could, of course, add 301 redirects but I presume there is an easy way to do this within the WP setup. Any ideas? Thanks

What should be noindexed on a Wordpress blog?
I know this can be a "it depends" answer so I'll try to explain. Qualifications on your answers would be great. I use the Wordpress architecture for myself and clients on sites and blogs. Almost every business site we create has a blog and I'm always working to improve results on them. My strategy has been the following: Categories: General, main content types, general keywords. Index, follow Tags: Very specific, post specific, may only be used once for one post. My categories have descriptions that are displayed on the category pages with excerpts. Tags rarely have a description but are displayed with excerpts on the page. My idea has been to index the categories to crawl the content and they have unique content by showing the category description. Tags shouldn't be archived because they may be all over the place and may have only 1 post with no tag description. I'm trying to reduce duplicate content but I don't want to limit results for my clients and myself. Should I set tags to noindex, follow or should I have them indexed? The only thing I'm thinking with having the tags indexed is that I may be able to get additional traffic through the more specific tags (i.e. tag = meta tags, category = SEO).
