Fading Text Links Look Like Spammy Hidden Links to a g-bot?
-
Ah, Hello Mozzers, it's been a while since I was here.
Wanted to run something by you...
I'm looking to incorporate some fading text using Javascript onto a site homepage using the method described here;
http://blog.thomascsherman.com/2009/08/text-slideshow-or-any-content-with-fades/
so, my question is; does anyone think that Google might see this text as a possible dark hat SEO anchor text manipulation (similar to hidden links)?
The text will contain various links (4 or 5) that will cycle through one another, fading in and out, but to a bot the text may appear initially invisible, like so;
style="display: none;"><a href="">Link Here</a>
All links will be internal.
My gut instinct is that I'm just being stupid here, but I wanted to stay on the side of caution with this one!
Thanks for your time

Yes, that seems a fair point.
I'll go ahead with the ticker and hope for the best!
Thanks for your help on this one.

I should add that there are sites that hide links without trouble, but it's usually in very standardized places (dropdown menus, for example).
The ticker probably is a bit safer. I wouldn't load it up with links, but at least the behavior is more like tabbed content - you're showing chunks of content at a time. I'm worried that the combo of hidden text and color change on the other approach is just going to set off alarms.

Dr. Pete
Good to see your face in here
Thanks for confirming my worst suspicions! I'll be staying clear of that method then.
It's use was essentially just to flash up a short text decription and a link to new site content (to fit in a fairly small space), like a news ticker.
Do you think a javascript style news ticker, like the one at the top here would be better?
http://sandbox.scriptiny.com/contentslider/slider.html
It removes the need to set style="display: none;" however, some text starts off outside of the "news ticker" limits and so is technically invisible to begin with.
Thanks again.

Using display:none on content can be a bit hard to predict. When it's something clear, like tabbed navigation, it's usually ok (and Google is getting a lot better about it). When it's something unusual, Google's guesses about what you're trying to do aren't always great. The actual color-change JS is probably fine, but this could look like hidden text, given the initial setting. For 4-5 links, it may not matter, but given that the benefits are dubious at best (I agree about it being pretty awful for usability), I wouldn't personally take the risk.

Anyone?

Rob,
You're right, it's rubbish for navigation, but it's what is required in this instance.
There's 'real' navigation as well, this is just a feed to catch the visitor's eye and throw up new pages or content that might be of interest.
Thanks

Not sure why you would want to use this technique on a 'navigation'? It's not great from a user experience perspective. I would use something like this for 'text rotation' on things like testimonials, or reviews to keep fresh content loaded to the domain (switching it up every few days).. I wouldn't use this for navigation on a site.
Just my observation. Cheers!

Location Links in Footer
Our business is in 10 cities. We offer identical services in each city, there's absolutely nothing different about the services we offer based on location. We have a contact page for each city with a bit of unique content (phone, address, photo of city, list of counties we service). It really would be a grey area to create subsites for each city and try to rewrite the service description content 10 times. However, we want to improve organic results. We of course have Google Places listings for each city. From an on-page SEO perspective, wouldn't it only have the possibility of benefiting, not hurting local SEO but add the city name linked to that city's contact page in the footer? I've seen arguments against it, and could see maybe if you were in like 50 cities instead of 10, but is there really any observed downside to doing that in the footer for every page? We can't title the difference service pages with the city name in the headings or page title, so at least we'd have anchor text in the footer.

Does adding more outgoing links on a high PA page decrease the juice passed to previous links?
Hi, I'm not sure how PA DA exactly works when the goal is to create backlinks to your site in order to have the most impact on passing PA DA juice (if there is such a thing) to ones money site. For example let's say you have a blog and the PA is 40 DA is 30. Let's say I create a backlink pointing to my site on the homepage of this blog, in which I desire better rankings for, and the links I created are only 1-3 outgoing links on this post which is again on the homepage. Then say in a months time, I want to add another post on the homepage (so the 40 PA and 30 DA stays the same) creating a backlink to one of my other money sites. Does adding this second round of backlinks result in sending less juice to the first? This is what I want to know. Thank you!

ECommerce website with link to manufactures site for ordering - Should these links be follow or no follow?
Dear Mozzers, I have a couple of questions regarding link juice and whether I should have do follow or no follow links ? We have an affiliate eCommerce website and on our product pages we have a "Order online " button which will go our subdomain on the manufactures site in order for the user to complete the online ordering process So it's - www.ourcompany.co.uk - "Order Online Button" - www.manufactuer.ourcompany.co.uk Should this " Order online Button" be a Follow or No Follow link ? I ask this as currently from looking at Majestic seo , these "order online " buttons on my product pages seems to be Follow links so am I losing potential link juice by sending it externally ? Am I correct in assuming by changing it to be no follows, I would increase the link juice going elsewhere internally? thanks Pete

Anchor text help
Hello, I am a small website designer in Mexico.. as you know it is hard to rank in these keywords My main competitors appear with (diseño web = web design) on google.com.mx Almost 80% of the anchor text from my links are (diseño web Mexico =web design Mexico) If I search (diseño web Mexico =web design) on google.com.mx I appear on first page. If I search (diseño web = web design) on google.com.mx I appear on page 3. My questions: Is this because my anchor text is diseño web Mexico? should i change it to (diseño web = web design)? Or is it because (diseño web = web design) is a harder key word to rank? this is my website http://bit.ly/eKyWvr Regards

Links from tumblr
I have two links from hosted tumblr blogs which are not on tumblr.com. So, website1 has a tumblr blog: tumblr.website1.com And another site website2.com also uses the a record/custom domains option from tumblr but not on a subdomain, which is decribed below: http://www.tumblr.com/docs/en/custom_domains Does this mean that all links from such sites count as coming from the same IP in google's eyes? Or is there value in getting links from multiple sites because the a-record doesn't affect SEO in a negative way? Many thanks, Mike.
