Where to find specialized directories
-
I'm looking to find some specialized directories, as I assist with a laboratory robotics group. These can be paid (actually preferred for now) or free. I know that seomoz has a helpful list of directories, but I was wondering if anyone else knows of a good place to find specialized directories like this. Thanks.

Thanks everyone. This has all been very helpful.

You might try for some edu links too, if the product is something that is used by university labs. For an example local to me, if I was someone who sold surplus parts or metals or was targeting engineering students, I'd look at contacting some of the following following pages at Stanford from this query http://www.google.com/search?q=%22alan+steel%22+site%3Astanford.edu. This query is for Alan Steel, which is a local supply place. It gives me a lot of other pages where my hypothetical business might get a link

Have you tried using advanced search operators? Here is a good guide: http://www.seomoz.org/article/the-professionals-guide-to-advanced-search-operators
Some possible searches that might work are:
allinurl:robotics directory
allintitle: robotics directory
robotics * directory
intext:robotics directory

Google:
Science "web directory edited by humans" "submit link"

Please help me find unnatural links
My URL is: http://bit.ly/hBJAG4 Just been hit with an unnatural imbound links penalty and don't know what to do. I haven't done any link building work for the last 3 years other then creating an infographic at Christmas that was incredibly popular: http://bit.ly/14lao4G I have 0 paid links and I have never spammed a blog or forum. The only thing I can think of is back in 2006/2007 I was directory crazy - I got listed in all of the (what I thought at the time) were good quality paid directories - could this have come back to haunt me? Why do you think I have just been penalized now when these directory links have been there for years? Should I start getting rid of the directory links? - they did cost me a lot of cash. Can any of you spot any other links that could be seen as unnatural? Thanks to anyone who can help in advance

Subdomain or no subdomain ? About location of a special page on the site
I have a blog on interior decoration and I have made a Wordpress Plugin which is not at all related to the niche of my blog...I have created this plugin in the hope that I might get backlinks due to this...but am not sure whether I should keep the plugin documentation page on some page of the blog itself like www.example.com/blog/plugin-page/ or on some subdomain like plugin-page.example.com

What do the "best" backlink profiles look like, in terms of percentages from quality content, bookmarks, social media, directories, etc?
I recognize that there is no such thing as one ideal link profile, per se, but I am curious, if you sampled 100 high authority sites, what would their inbound links look like on average, broken out by source type? Some sites would have a ton of social sharing due to their funny pop-cultural content, while others might be quoted and linked in context for their brilliant insights. A very technical resource might gain a lot of links from forum discussions. If I can complete this exercise on my own, I welcome your advice on how to do that with OSE or the like.

Can Low Quality Directories Hurt?
I realize that links from low quality directories aren't of much value. Having said that, can doing this kind of linking actually penalize a site?

Finding freshest backlinks
Hi everyone, Thanks in advance for your help, I am doing some competitor analysis and noticed that one of our competitors had a massive spike in the number of baclkinks it received in the past month. Is there a tool or a method I can use to determine what links they have picked up in the last few weeks, by filtering by age of link? Many thanks Al
