Why is there such a big discrepancy between OSE and GWT regarding # backlinks?
-
Hello,
We have been doing some analysis around our backlink profiles for our sites and have been experiencing a massive discrepancy between what is reported as number of C class linking domains in OSE and the information returned in Google Webmaster tools.
For a variety of sites OSE is reporting numbers < 10 for C class linking doamins while GWT shows >100 unique domains linking (we confirmed that the majority of these links are in different C classes)
Is this simply a matter of the limited index size of OSE or could there be another explanation? It is interesting that the links that do show up in OSE a nearly exclusively sites that we own.

The OSE index is smaller than what Google reports in GWT, but then again, the links reported in GTW are famously inaccurate and often not up to date. Google often includes "junk" links that have very little chance of effecting their ranking algorithm.
Linkscape crawls approximately the top 25% of web, which is where the majority of links are found that actually influence rankings. It's not a perfect system, and sometimes links are missed, but it works well as a predictive tool and also for competitive research.
"It is interesting that the links that do show up in OSE a nearly exclusively sites that we own."
Yes, it is interesting. The links Linkscape miss tend to be either beneath layers of navigation, or on pages with few inbound links. Sometimes improving your link structure will help your links both appear in Linkscape, and improve crawling and rankings from Google as well (although I'd be careful in your case, because you own the sites in question, not to create the appearance of a link scheme)
Best of Luck!

Neither OSE and WMT is providing the real and full link profile. I have the same issue with several accounts.
But both can be a really good indicator if used together. Personally I use a 3 combo: WMT, OSE and the Majestic tool.
With those 3 powers combined (like in Captain Planet) you will have a really good feedback.
I use WMT as a primary tool when I have access and OSE and Majestic as second tier. I use OSE as the main tool for competition analysis and majestic as a backup - filling some gaps.
You can also try Raven for some additional feedback - but a agin, no tool will provide full100% accurate information.
Hope it helps.

Http to Https Backlink Value
We updated our website from http to https and I wanted to know how backlinks were affected by this. The new site redirects all old http links to the https home page. How does this affect more specific backlinks like http://www.mysite.com/about ? The old http://www.mysite.com/about is now being directed to https://www.mysite.com . Do I need to set up redirects to pass value to my new pages?

Remove more than 1000 crawl errors from GWT in one day?
In google webmasters tools you have the feature "Crawl Errors". This one displays the top 1000 crawl errors google have on your site. I have around 16k crawl errors at the moment, which all are fixed. But i can only mark 1000 of them as fixed each day/each time google crawls the site. (This as it only displays top 1000 errors. When i have marked those as fixed it won't show other errors for a while.) Does anyone know if it's possible to mark ALL errors as fixed in one operation?

Free Blogs Backlinks
Hello I have a very basic question, hope you people don't mind answering this. I plan to create a 10 blogs with keyword specific domain name, where in footer i can place back-link pointing to my website and thought to run on C-Class IP's which will cost me of-course. Now 2nd option which will be free, where i can plan to have my blog on wordpress, Timblr, blogger etc free blogging website and use the backlinks from there and all will have different IP which will also best for SEO prospective. Can you suggest me which will be the best option to have blogs on owned domain name or free blogging site, keeping in mind this will be just s prospective to generate backlinks. Do recommend is this a genuine way to get backliks or its another spam, and where we will keep on updating the all blogs regularly. Thanks in Advance! Regards Danish Wadhwa

Problem generating backlinks
Hello everyone, Over the past couple of days I have been using a variety of different free and paid programs to check how many backlinks I have. I have used at least 15 different ones, SEOmoz is the newest and am awaiting those results. All but one of those programs have said that I have 0 backlinks. The one said I have 11. The thing is...over the past month I have submitted my site to over 500 PR0 directories, 250+ PR3-PR7 directories, have made well over 75 article submissions to over 20 websites(almost all of them were approved and up and running, and some of these websites have a PR of 7), a couple dozen Press Releases, set up profiles linking to my site on over 50 forums, set up profiles linking to my site on a variety of different Web 2.0 sites, and still nothing. I have been doing this every day for over a month. Anyone have any ide?

Backlinks to unique login pages
Hi There, This has turned out to be slightly long winded! Congrats to anyone who manages to follow what I am on about and cheers to anyone that can help! The company I work for has several hundred backlinks from customer sites (authority sites) that link to their unique login pages (e.g. customer.oursitesname.com/unique-identifier). From these pages they can access our learning platform. For maximum SEO benefits we have been trying to think of a way to get these customers to link to our start page. This is what we have come up with. Customers would link to us using a URL with this format www.oursitesname.com/#customer-unique-identifier. (I have read somewhere that Google “ignores” everything after a #). This URL would then cause a Jscript pop-up or drop-down to open. The pop-up or drop-down would be hidden for the normal user and only be visible for users that visit over the unique URL. The pop-up or drop-down would be unique for each customer (mainly for branding purposes). The pop-up or drop-down would contain signup/login fields. So now to my question, will this get us in trouble with Google? Is there a better solution than this? Are we over thinking it and should we just do something like this: www.oursitesname.com/customer-login/unique -identifier and set www.oursitesname.com/customer-login/ as the canonical? Does the Google bot get suspicious of hundreds of canonical tags pointing back to the one URL? Thanks in advance! Henry

Backlinks pointing to the B page of an A/B test.
To rel-canonical or to 301, that is the question. We're frequently running an A/B split test on our home page to optimize conversion. As a result about 10,000 backlinks to our homepage point to the B page. (If we're running a test when a blog or newspaper checks us out, there's a 50% chance they're diverted to the B page. So when they copy our home page URL, they're unknowingly copying the B page link.) We can't contact all of these sites and ask for them to change their links. A lot of the links are from big organizations that aren't interested in tweaking the links of old articles. So should we rel-canonical or 301 the B page? We consistently use the same URL for our B page tests, so we'd only have to 'fix' one page. Thanks in advance!
