Using rel="nofollow"
-
Hello,
Quick question really, as far as the SERPs are concerned If I had a site with say 180 links on each page - 80 above suggested limit, would putting 'rel="nofollow"' on 80 of these be as good as only having 100 links per page?
Currently I have removed the links, but wereally need these as they point to networked sites that we own and are relevant...
But we dont want to look spammy...
An example of one of the sites without the links can be seen here
whereas a site with the links can be seen here
You can see the links we are looking to keep (at the bottom) and why...
Thanks

Sorry, by "bigger problems" I just meant the potential link-farm.
The nofollow will remove the SEO risk - you'll still lose a little link-juice to those links, but you won't get penalized down the road for having them. Of course, you won't gain any SEO value from the cross-linking either. At this point, though, I think that's inevitable. The risk is greater than the reward from cross-linking this many domains.
Any other ways to block the links are going to look more suspicious to Google than nofollow (including iFrames). Any I can think of would be best avoided in this scenario.
Any way you can contextually cross-link would create less SEO risk and potentially let you get some ranking value out of the connections. That's why I suggested links at the job listing level. I think that might benefit users a bit more, too. Even then, you don't want to go overboard.

Hi Dr Peter
Thanks for the detailed response. A few questions, you say I have bigger problems than the 100 links/page - is that just that the sites are at risk of looking like a link farm, or are there bigger problems still?
I hear you on the fact that links in the footer carry less weight and on the consolidating aspect, and it is something that we are working on, but in the mean time, I would really like to find a way if possible to keep some form of cross connecting the sites.. We do have the detail pages which we don't need to be SEO primed, really we only need the -
SEO primed, you can see the different phrases (search patterns) that we are targeting; each site has hundreds of pages like this, that we don't necessarily need primed as these are only live for 28 days..
Is there an option to either include these links in either an iframe in the footer area (for user reference only) or on the detail pages?
Any other options that will work, that will not result in the sites being at risk of looking like a link farm?
I appreciate your insight.
Many thanks

You've got bigger problems here than 100 links/page (that's just a guideline) - you're cross-connecting enough sites that it looks like a link farm. Having them all in the footer only adds to the problem, and makes the tactic look lower-quality. I'd definitely no-follow these, as you could potentially be penalized.
The nofollow won't really help with the 180 links - it'll still burn up link-juice. It'll just keep these links from getting you into trouble. Realistically, these links are probably already being devalued by the algorithm.
Practically, being in the footer, these links may not have a ton of value for visitors (if you click-mapped the page, I'm betting the CTR is very low). I wonder if there's a way to integrate them. For example, when someone clicks through to a job listing in Kent, having something like "See more jobs in Kent" on that page and link it to: http://www.kentjobsonline.net/.
From an SEO standpoint, these geo-targeted microsites have lost a lot of value over the past couple of years. I've even seen the strategy run into Panda issues. You may want to re-evaluate down the road and consider consolidating.

They are all legitimate links, all 74 sites act as one larger site, or a network of sites. But the thing is when I removed the links I moved up in the SERPs...
What would be the best way of showing te links to visitors but hiding them from SERPs?
Thanks

Quality is MUCH better than quantity

You should build the site for functionality and if there is a legitimate reason to have all those links then feel free to put them in. I wouldn't over think this.

I think nowadays rel=nofollow there is no meaning. With the changes in google, also the link juice is not been affect by it. You can check some info in this old post: http://www.seomoz.org/q/do-you-use-nofollow-and-rel-nofollow
But in SEO's live everything is gray, and not black in white. Its better for you using 100 links per page and go with more security.

Is it better to shorten my existing url to use only keyword after domain with a 301 redirect from existing url
I have a long existing URL that has included my key word but the url has about 5 additional words in the text ( eg url would have " /super widgets in stock at the widget store " as url text after domain. keywords is super widget The URL was at the top of search results for my keyword for many years until recently. Is it better to shorten my url text to now use only my keyword " /super-widgets " after the domain with a 301 direct from my existing url to optimize it Thanks

Tags vs. Categories? What should I use?
I'm starting with a blog (self-hosted wordpress) and I'm thinking of the following content structure so that the readers are easily able to locate relevant content: Background: It's a blog which gives people relevant info about government jobs. To start with we will just be publishing information about these jobs but over a period of time also intend to post content that helps readers prepare for these jobs. In other words, right now it's just about detailed job notifications but in the coming months, we shall also post about preparation-related information. Typically, each of the job notifications can be bifurcated like: Jobs basis industry Banking Railways Clinical, etc. Jobs basis company ABC co. DEF co. XYZ co. etc. Jobs basis State / City City 1 City 2, etc. Jobs basis educational qualification Graduation Post-Graduation, etc. Now, I'm seriously confused how should I structure this data from the perspective of Categories & Tags such that it's reader as well as SEO-friendly. Do note that each of the government jobs post ideally falls in a couple of above mentioned categories. Thanks..

Ecommerce- Keyword use in Product links on Category page
I'm wondering how Keyword use in Product links on Category pages can affect a pages rank? I have 1 site where this seems to be an issue but not on all categories. For this site, a site: keyword search ranks the category page as no.1 in the SERPS but a non-site: search shows 1 of the many products within the category as the highest ranking page (currently 20 in google) on this site. This product is probably the least likely to generate a conversion due to it's cost so this is less than ideal. The plural search of the keyword shows the category page and it ranks higher than the keyword itself (currently 9 in google) Category name and URL = keyword. The category is paginated with 12 products per page. Product URL and anchor text is brand-model-type (where type = keyword) I'd like to keep the product URLs and anchors as they are if I can as they are well searched terms themselves but I want to optimize a category page to rank for the keyword itself. Have any of you overcome a similar issue? Would adding more text to the category page dilute the issue?

Using Transcription Service For Videos - Have Question Around Search and Spiders
Hi All, So I have put together a weekly video series on security topics. I have read an SEOmoz post around how you can boost SEO by adding the transcription to the page, which makes perfectly good sense. My question is, can I include the first couple of paragraphs and then have a "read the full transcription" so when the user clicks, the rest of the content appears? Do the search engine spiders only crawl the first two paragraphs in this instance or do they crawl the whole thing even though the entire content is not on the page? I dont mind making the page longer and including the entire transcription if it is easier for SEO but if there is no difference, than I think the first option would be the best user experience. Thanks for the help Pat

Recreate missing pages or just use 301 redirect?
Hi, on the Competitive Comparison section of the "link analysis" page the top 5 sites are linking to pages on my site that no longer exist. I'm wondering if it is worthwhile to recreate these pages that no longer exist or if I should just use a 301 redirect to some page on my site that has related info. Thanks for your suggestions.

Nofollow on these internal links?
On an x-cart ecommerce website we have, seomoz has picked up a lot of duplicate content, based on URLs that are different, but are essentially the same page. These come from Fitlers, that allow a page to show only certain colours and styles, reordering page by price etc, and also the page 2, page 3 etc of a category: All the below are '4ft-bedding.html' http://www.textilesdirect.co.uk/store/4ft-Bedding.html?filter=1&value=Pink http://www.textilesdirect.co.uk/store/4ft-Bedding.html?page=2 http://www.textilesdirect.co.uk/store/4ft-Bedding.html?sort=price&view_all=Y I've now changed all these internal links to rel="nofollow" on the a tag. Is that the correct and best way to sort? I might be mistaken on when I did this update and when the last report was ran, but on the SEOmoz crawling report, it still has the above as problem pages. thanks!
