Query for checking is a link to domain A already exists on domain B
-
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can help. I need to have a simple check where I have 2 domains, and I can check of there are any links from domain A to domain B.
Does anyone what would be the best query for this and if you would use google, bing, yahoo or other SE.
Many thanks
-
Basically, you want to know:
Before I send a link request to this site, I want to check and make sure that I don't already have a link from them.
Is this correct? Just wanting to help rephrase to help you get some more on-target answers here.

Thanks Sebastian,
It's a bit of a conundrum I am having problems solving - essentially it needs to be very quick and not resource intensive. I this case it looks like the search engines don't want to provide the data.
Thanks

I see - I'm afraid I don't know of any query, which might be used in the search field in order to achieve this and not sure if there is such a query - it would obviously only show the pages that are indexed by the specific search engine rather than all actual pages that the site listed your link on.
Performing the search on all of the pages of the site would be very resource intensive and I'm not sure if there even is such tool available - I believe you could find something if you were pointing to the specific page, but to crawl the entire site - I haven't heard of.
As a workaround (which I know you're not so keen on) what you could do is to crawl the entire site using sitemap generator application - to get all (or at least most) of the pages of the specific site. Once you have all these links exported as .txt you can then process them with the code by looping one by one and checking them with my previous suggestion, but that's all I could think of.
Sorry for not being able to be more of help on this occasion.

Hi Sebastian,
Not quite - I'm actually looking for something simpler than that.
Suppose for example you took your own website (whatever that is) - and you want to find out if there is a link anywhere on SEOMOZ.org to your website.
Is there is simple query you could punch into a search engine to provide a list of result showing all pages on SEOMOZ that have links to your website.
-
I think what you're looking for is some regular expression which will return true or false when the specific url has been found within the content of the page - that's obviously if I understood it well.
If so - here's a simple way of achieving this with PHP Simple Html Dom Parser http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2334206/url-matching-using-preg-match-all-in-php-and-regex
Rather than looping through the array you could just check whether it is empty or not - if empty - link wasn't found.
I hope that's what you're looking for.
-
Close but I don't think correct - Unless I have hundreds of links from the BBC
-
google: [link:seomoz.org]&&[site:wikipedia.org]
?
-
Thats not really what I am after to be honest. For link building I just want a very quick simple query I can punch in a search engine to check if I already have a link on that website.
-
well, then you can use services like http://cognitiveseo.com/ which will track your inbound links, and actually provide you with much more data like visual map where is the link - header, content, sidebar, footer and all the other attributes - (no)follow, image, text etc.
afaik campaigns in cognitiveSEO are updated daily.
-
The problem with open site explorer is that the index only gets updated once a month, so it wouldn't show any links that have been acquired in the current month.
-
Hi,
IMHO Seomoz Open Site explorer is an answer
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/domains?site=siteb.com
you have it directly there - linking root domain, in an instant.
-
Hi - thanks for the answers but I think you miss understood my question.
I am looking for a query I would use to check if Domain A LINKS to Domain B.
EG What query would I use, and what search engine, to check if there was any link on SEOMOZ pointing to My Website.
-
Hi The Skunk, Here I'm giving you the list from which you can easily check the multiple domains:
3.Go Daddy
6. Web Address
I hope that you will found the solution.

# of links and how it impacts ranking
Hi everyone I was running a competitor analysis in Moz Pro of my site and 3 competitors that are ranked above me. One of the things I noticed is that my # of total links is very high compared to 2 of my competitors(please see attachment). Other seo tools are telling me the same. This is mainly due to a few affiliate sites that have us in their footer. I was wondering if this could impact our ranking if some of these sites have very low domain authority and have thousands of backlinks to our site? I am looking into starting the disavowing process. My (properly optimised) webpage outscores page#1 ranked competitors on page/domain authority ... but I'm only on page#2\. Huh?
I'm puzzled. I've optimised a particular page for a particular search term, and the SEOMoz tool gives me an A for on-page optimisation. So no problem there. I can understand why my webpage/site is being outranked by pages from (for example) the Guardian and Oxford University, but there are several sites that Google is ranking on page #1 though their page and domain scores are well below ours. Specifically: my page/domain authority scores are 46/52, compared with 22/46 for the competitor that Google is ranking #5 - yet we only rank a lowly #12. And it's not as though the particular page in question isn't an obvious and appropriate part of our site. We work with new writers and the page in question offers a selection of creative writing courses. It's not like we're a writing-related site that suddenly has a page advertising fake rolexes. It's not a timing issue either, as most of our links have been in place for a couple of years at least. So I'm puzzled. And concerned. This page of ours was a reliable revenue generator for us and it's dying out there on the page#2 wilderness. If anyone can help, I'd be massively grateful. I don't know if this is helpful, but the page in question is http://www.writersworkshop.co.uk/Creative-Writing-Courses.html and the search term is ... well, heck, you take a wild guess. We're a British firm, so the only search engine that really matters to us is google.co.uk

What's the difference between 'external links' and 'linking domains to this domain' in my report?
I'm looking at a competitor analysis report. The number provided for 'external links' is 150. The number for 'external links to this domain' is 4860 and 'linking domains to this domain' is 232. What are the differences between these numbers?

Manta inbound link in OSE - competitor site yes, my site no, why?
Our site has had a link back to our site from Manta for a long time, but it's not appearing in our OSE results. One of our competitors similarly has an inbound link from Manta and that link DOES appear in their OSE results. I'm not certain whether that matters for us. Does it? But in any event, why would the one link appear but not the other? Thanks! Tim

Should I move my brand under our corporate domain to boost Domain Authority?
Dear Community, I am seeking your expert advice on this situation: We have these assets as a starting point: a long-existing and well-linked Corporate Website (CW) with good metrics, a Brand Website (BW) with low/medium metrics, and some Brand Competitor (BC) websites with very similar metrics to BW. We will launch a new version of BW very soon with a well SEOd structure and copy (the old one was not SEOd at all) which I hope itself will bring SERP advantages. My dilemma emerged after checking the domain level values of our Corporate Website: CW / BW / BCs Domain Authority: 48 / 28 / 24-27 Domain mozRank: 4.79 / 3.15 / 2.6-3.25 Domain mozTrust: 4.73 / 2.79 / 2.47-3.06 My understanding is that based on seoMoz consensus domain level values give about 1/4th of the total pie. Based on these what do you think I should to win over competitors rankings? Should I keep running the service under BW (in an neighborhood with nearly identically valued competitors) Should I redirect BW to a sub-folder of the Corporate Website? (e.g.www.corporate.com/brand) with 301 redirects and enjoy the advantages of the much better domain values Alternatively, I could also build valuable and keyword-optimized content under our CW linking back to our BW. My understanding is that Option 1 has the least advantages among the three. Option 2 and 3 compete with the following advantages: Option 2: We could quickly rank higher as domain values elevate us from the mediocre BW and BC values (offsetting a little loss on 301 redirects) Option 3 would allow us to occuppy more positions for the important keywords on SERPs thus attract more "deep-browsing" visitors (and possibly BW could also get some advantages by receiving links from CW) Which direction would you proceed from here? Cheers, Andrew

"keyword" - rank the home page or sub page domain.com/keyword?
One of my clients has a pretty decent website that ranks 1st place for most major keywords in their line of business. EXCEPT one keyword that i've been struggling to get 1st position on Google (currently 2nd). My problem is: let's say "tennis shoes" as a keyword the home page of course has several other shoes listed but I've seen that Google took my home page and made it 2nd position (on 1st page). Where the section domain.com/tennis-shoes is on 2nd page of Google. My question is should i rel cannonical from the /tennis-shoes section to the home page so it focuses more on the specific keyword that i need to get the home 1st? Or should i leave the home page generic and focus more on /tennis-shoes to get that 1st position? What do you Moz'ers Think?

1 domain dominating unbranded search terms?
Anyone have any insight or comments? We’ve been negatively impacted by the last Google algorithm update - not by a penalization of our site but because another site is now grabbing the top 3-4 search results for long tail physician name searches thereby pushing us lower in the rankings. Being that we’ve never seen this happen with unbranded search terms, we’re not sure how to address it. To see an example, click http://www.google.com/search?q=dr.+elizabeth+eads. You’ll notice that the top 4 results are all from 1 site - HealthGrades - with 2-3 of the 4 pages being canned, pre-written templates without any unique content (see malpractice & sanction pages). It seems that they are doing this by paginating their information into separate pages, thus appearing in multiple search results, instead of putting all the information on 1 page, as we do and Google’s best practices suggest. Any advice or comments would really be appreciated.

Viewing Specific Links in OSE - For a Specific Month
(1) Can I use OSE to see the number of links per month a site acauired over the past year (month by month)? For example, I might be interested if I see a competitor acquired a surprisingly high number of links during December, 2010. (2) Can I use OSE to see the a list of links a site acquired during a specific time, such as December of 2010? For example, if I see a competitor suddenly acquired an unusually high number of links in December, 2010, I'd like to see a list of those links, to figure out how they acquired those links. Thanks!
