How critical is Duplicate content warnings?
-
Hi,
So I have created my first campaign here and I have to say the tools, user interface and the on-page optimization, everything is useful and I am happy with SEOMOZ.
However, the crawl report returned thousands of errors and most of them are duplicate content warnings.
As we use Drupal as our CMS, the duplicate content is caused by Drupal's pagination problems. Let's say there is a page called "/top5list" , the crawler decided /top5list?page=1" to be duplicate of "/top5list". There is no real solution for pagination problems in Drupal (as far as I know).
I don't have any warnings in Google's webmaster tools regarding this and my sitemap I submitted to Google doesn't include those problematic deep pages. (that are detected as duplicate content by SEOMOZ crawler)
So my question is, should I be worried about the thousands of error messages in crawler diagnostics?
any ideas appreciated

Personally, I'd keep an eye on it. These things do have a way of expanding over time, so you may want to be proactive. At the moment, though, you probably don't have to lose sleep over it.

Thanks for that command Dr. Meyers. Apparently, only 5 such pages are indexed. I suppose I shouldn't worry about this then?

One clarification one Vahe's answer - if these continue (?page=2, ?page=3, etc.) then it's traditional pagination. You could use the GWT solution Adam mentioned, although, honestly, I find it's hit-or-miss. It is simpler than other solution. The "ideal" Google solution is very hard to implement (and I actually have issues with it). The other option is to META NOINDEX the variants, but that would take adjusting the template code dynamically.
If it's just an issue of a bunch of "page=1" duplicates, and this isn't "true" pagination, then canonical tags are probably your best bet. There may be a Drupal plug-in or fix - unfortunately, I don't have much Drupal experience.
The question is whether these pages are being indexed by Google, and how many of them there are. At large scale, these kinds of near-duplicates can dilute your index, harm rankings, and even contribute to Panda issues. At smaller scale, though, they might have no impact at all. So, it's not always clear cut, and you have to work the risk/cost calculation.
You can run a command in Google like:
site:example.com inurl:page=
...and try to get a sense of how much of this content is being indexed.
The GWT approach won't hurt, and it's fine to try. I just find that Google doesn't honor it consistently.

Thanks Adam and Vahe. Your suggestions are definitely helpful.

For pagination problem's it would be better to use this cannonical method- http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com.au/2012/03/video-about-pagination-with-relnext-and.html .
Having dup content in the form paginated results will not penalise you, rather the page/link equity will be split between all these pages. This means you would need to spend more time and energy on the original page to outrank your competitors.
To see these errors in Google Webmaster Tools you should go to the HTML sections area where it will review the sites meta data. I'm sure ull find the same issues there, instead of the sitemaps.
So to improve the overall health of your website, I would suggest that you do try and verify this issue.
Hope this helps. Any issues, best to contact me directly.
Regards,
Vahe

OK, this is just what I've done, and it might not work for everyone.
As far as I can tell, the duplicate content warnings do not hurt my rankings, I don't think. When I first signed up for SEOMoz they really alarmed me. If they are hurting my rankings, it's not much - as we preform well in many competitive keywords for our industry, and our website traffic has been growing ~20% year over year for many years now.
The fix for auto-generated duplicate content on our site (which I inherited as my responsibility when I started at my company) would be very expensive. It's something I plan on doing eventually along with some other overhauls, but right now it's not in the budget, because it would basically involve re-architecting how the site and databases function on the back end (ugh).
So, in order to help mitigate any issues and help keep Google from indexing all the duplicate content that can be generated by our system, I use the "URL Parameters" setting in Google Webmaster Tools (under Site Configuration). I've set up a few parameters for Google to specifically NOT INDEX, to keep the duplicate content out of the search engine. I've also set some parameters to specifically reenforce content I want indexed (along with including the original content in sitemaps I've curated myself, rather than having auto-generated sitemaps potentially polluted with duplicate content).
My thinking is that while Roger the SEOMoz bot is still finding this stuff and generating warnings, Googlebot is not.
I don't work at an agency - I'm in-house and I've hard to learn everything by trial and error and often fly by the seat of my pants with this sort of thing. So my conclusion/solutions may be wrong or not work for you, but it seems to work for me.
It's a band-aid fix at best, but it seems to be better than nothing!
Hope this helps,
-Adam

Shopify Duplicate Content in products
Hello Moz Community, New to Moz and looking forward to beginning my journey towards SEO education and improving our clients' sites. Our client's website is a Shopify store. https://spiritsofthewestcoast.com/ Our first Moz reports show 686 duplicate content issues. I will show the first 4 as examples. https://spiritsofthewestcoast.com/collections/native-earrings-and-studs-in-silver-and-gold/products/haida-eagle-teardrop-earrings https://spiritsofthewestcoast.com/collections/native-earrings-and-studs-in-silver-and-gold/products/haida-orca-silver-earrings https://spiritsofthewestcoast.com/collections/native-earrings-and-studs-in-silver-and-gold/products/silver-oval-earrings https://spiritsofthewestcoast.com/collections/native-earrings-and-studs-in-silver-and-gold/products/haida-eagle-spirit-silver-earrings As you can see, URL titles are unique. But I know that the content in each of those products have very similar product descriptions but not exactly. But since they have been flagged as a site issue by Moz, I am guessing that the content is 95% duplicate. So can a rel=canonical be the right solution for this type of duplicate content? Or should I be considering adding new content to each of 686 products to drop below the 95% threshold? Or another solution that I may not be aware of. Thanks in advance for your assistance and expertise! Sean

404 Error Pages being picked up as duplicate content
Hi, I recently noticed an increase in duplicate content, but all of the pages are 404 error pages. For instance, Moz site crawl says this page: https://www.allconnect.com/sc-internet/internet.html has 43 duplicates and all the duplicates are also 404 pages (https://www.allconnect.com/Coxstatic.html for instance is a duplicate of this page). Looking for insight on how to fix this issue, do I add an rel=canonical tag to these 60 error pages that points to the original error page? Thanks!

Does adding a noindex tag reduce duplicate content?
I've been working under the assumption for some time that if I have two (or more) pages which are very similar that I can add a noindex tag to the pages I don't need and that will reduce duplicate content. As far as I know this removes the pages with the tag from Google's index and stops any potential issues with duplicate content. It's the second part of that assumption that i'm now questioning. Despite pages having the noindex tag they continue to appear in Google Search console as duplicate content, soft 404 etc. That is, new pages are appearing regularly that I know to have the noindex tag. My thoughts on this so far are that Google can still crawl these pages (although won't index them) so shows them in GSC due to a crude issue flagging process. I mainly want to know: a) Is the actual Google algorithm sophisticated enough to ignore these pages even through GSC doesn't. b) How do I explain this to a client.

Over 700+ duplicate content pages -- help!
I just signed up for SEO Moz pro for my site. The initial report came back with over 700+ duplicate content pages. My problem is that while I can see why some of the content is duplicated on some of the pages I have no idea why it's coming back as duplicated. Is there a tutorial for a novie on how to read the duplicate content report and what steps to take? It's an e-commerce website and there is some repetitive content on all the product pages like our "satisfaction guaranteed" text and the fabric material... and not much other text. There's not a unique product description because an image speaks for itself. Could this be causing the problem? I have lots of URLs with over 50+ duplicates. Thx for any help.

Does creating a mobile site in html5 create duplicate content?
We are creating a mobile site in html5 to serve smartphones only. On a seperate domain, m.example.com. From what I have read Google treats smartphones as desktops due to thier advanced web browser capabilities. So no need to bother with googlebot.mobile right? Googlebot should index the site once I create a normal sitemap.xml. My concern is that the mobile site pulls the same content as the main site which is already indexed. Would this not create duplicate content?

Duplicate Content from Google URL Builder
Hello to the SEOmoz community! I am new to SEOmoz, SEO implementation, and the community and recently set up a campaign on one of the sites I managed. I was surprised at the amount of duplicate content that showed up as errors and when I took a look in deeper, the majority of errors were caused by pages on the root domain I put through Google Analytics URL Builder. After this, I went into webmaster tools and changed the parameter handling to ignore all of the tags the URL Builder adds to the end of the domain. SEOmoz recently recrawled my site and the errors being caused by the URL Builder are still being shown as duplicates. Any suggestions on what to do?

Duplicate Content Question
Just signed up for pro and did my first diagnostic check - I came back with something like 300 duplicate content errors which suprised me because every page is unique. Turns out my pages are listed as www.sportstvjobs.com and just sportstvjobs.com does that really count as duplicate? and if so does anyone know what I should be doing differently? I thought it was just a canonical issue, but best I can tell I have the canonical in there but this still came up as a duplicate error....maybe I did canonical wrong, or its some other issue? Thanks Brian Clapp
