On-Page SEO Priorities: Title's, Anchor Text or Meta data?
-
**Any suggestions for prioritized on-page SEO work? Relative weights of importance? **
**What is most important from highest to lowest? **
- MetaTag Descriptions?
- Titles?
- Anchor Text?
- Alt Text - for images?
- Anything else?
We might not be able to do everything at once like I desire ......but I do feel we should at least get the ball moving in the right direction.
I am looking for ideas or suggestions on what to prioritize for a little bit of on-page SEO work on our website. I personally feel that SEO is pretty important but I am a novice. I have been reading this site the past week and want to convince my webpage guy that on-page SEO is important and that we should at least do a few things and gradually get the work done.
Rightfully so our #1 priority is to redesign our landing pages (they are bad) . I also think we should do a little On-Page work concurently. (Lack of on-page SEO is also preventiing me from successfully submitting and being accepted by Dmoz, Yahoo, BOW etc)
He is mainly a back engine guy and does a very good job with that. If I were to TELL him to do a few prioritized on-page SEO things what would you suggest? He did do something on the home page at my suggestion but that is all to this point. We have over 400 pages indexed with very little on-page SEO on them.
Thank you,
UtahTiger

I just thought of something else. This is slightly less critical but try to keep the file size of your page under 1mb. Some say 50kb but I think that's a little extreme in the age of broadband. The site I market is 1.1mb and loads in only 1.18 seconds. But do try to stay under 1mb because of mobile phones which are slower. (Unless you have a mobile version of your site, like I do)
Also, make sure all of your code validates. http://validator.w3.org/

Well, a couple more simple things you can implement are:
Make sure your target keywords appear on the page a few times, but don't overdo it! I cannot stress that enough. Only use them as much as what would sound natural to a human reading it.
Give your page at least a couple of paragraphs of quality, helpful content. My personal minimum I strive for is 300-400 words--that is just what has worked for me.
Make sure all images have relevant alt tags (your web person will know what that means; If not, you have a bigger issue than being new to SEO)
Don't put too many links on the page. i.e. If you have 200 products, don't link to every single one of them from the homepage; break them into categories and sub -pages.
Use a free service like http://pingdom.com/ to check the load time of your homepage. It will offer suggestions for improvement.
Set up 301 redirects to avoid duplicate content penalties. http://www.ragepank.com/articles/3/preventing-duplicate-content/
(OK, that one's not as easy)Submit a sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools
I hope you succeed in your endeavors!

Your title tag is the most important out of all the things you listed. Make sure it includes you top keyword you're trying to rank for, but don't stuff any more than two keywords or phrases in there. And don't exceed 70 characters. If you find you have a lot of extra room, include your brand name.
If you're linking to internal pages from your homepage, use anchor text you want those pages to rank for--as long as it makes sense to your customers.
Meta description doesn't have much, if any, SEO value. It is what potential customers will see in the search engine results; a good description will increase your click through rate. It's been theorized that Google tracks click through rate and bounce rate and uses this information to determine relevancy of sites to tweak ranking, thus you could say the meta description indirectly affects your ranking--for better or for worse.
As far as your boss not recognizing the value of SEO, just tell him: what good will it do to build the best site the world as ever seen if no one ever sees it?

Table text : Does that influences the website's ranking ?
We are currently working on a new page for one of our clients and there is A LOT of writing, so A LOT of differents pages. If I decide to put the texts on table text instead of creating a link for another page, will that influence the ranking in any way ? I've been a web writer for only a year now and still try to figure out how to optimize the written part. Thank you for your answers.

Does Google use 302's to pass value to the target page?
Hi, I've received the below advice, is this correct? Throughout the site, the 302 (moved temporarily) status code is used for redirects, which Google will use to pass value to the target page. Is this correct? I was under the impression a 301 was used to pass value to the target page? Could someone explain the difference between a 301 and a 302, I'm not 100% sure. Thanks, Nathan

Penalty for Changing Home Page Title Tags
Hey Mozzers I'm certain of the answer to this question, however I wanted to get some input from the experts in Moz-land to hopefully provide some additional perspective. I recently disagree with a client's assertion that there is some penalty Google levels for changing the title tags of your home page. Now, I understand changing the title tags can influence serp rankings, however, is anyone aware of some penalty Google levels for simply changing the title tags? Most of what I've read and experienced has people changing them all the time without some phantom penalty. It seems to me a problem of correlation = causality, in that people often attribute a drop to an action that may not have actually been the cause. Anyway, if you have any particular insight on this top I would appreciate it greatly. thanks!

Page Title in Local SEO Title Tags?
Hi All, Still working on my title tag usage for local SEO, and I was hoping for some more feedback. My question is this: In Local SEO titles, I'm using location + keyword combinations, unique on each page. However, since each page has a specific title for the client, I figure I should be placing that at the front. My thought here was that this helps with the overall usability to the reader of the website. Ex. Contact Us page for Pizza shop Contact Us | Springfield IN Gourmet Pizza | Moe's Italian Pizza Anyone have thoughts on this one? Thank you!

How do I best SEO optimize a landing page that is mostly graphics?
I have a social networking website built on a SocialEngine platform. All of the pages (except the home page) are password protected for members only. My web designer wants the home page to be primarily graphics - not text. It looks nice, but with no substantial copy on the page, can I still get the page to rank well with just meta title, description and keywords (even when those keywords aren't actually on the page?) What's the best way to handle this? Kim

Is Googlebot seeing text in my 'Read More' bar and could they even be penalising me for it?
Hi guys. Our web developers have put a read more bar that contains the on page SEO text for our webpage. By default, the read more bar is not expanded and you cannot see the text within. If you click 'Read More', the box expands and the text is shown on the page. I was wondering if googlebot is seeing this text at all - it's really important that it does because it contains all the on-page SEO text. I also wondered if this type of approach is still considered 'white hat'? If it's not, could google be penalising us for it? Thanks,

Has anyone had experience with the Wix platform and it's SEO qualities?
Wix offers an inexpensive, user friendly platform for building websites. Most of the site is flash, but Wix claims to be SEO friendly. I'm all ears for your feedback and experience with Wix.

Anchor Texts on Internal Links on my Site Question
[Hey folks, Anchor text question for internal links on my site. We all know that proper anchor text is important for rankings, both in links pointing to your site and links on your site. Google webmaster tools is showing my top internal anchor text links to be letters. This is because of navigation on the site which is in a global footer on hundreds of thousands of pages. Do you think that this dilutes or minimizes the relevance of the real anchor texts that we are targeting which trail behind these, or if this went away it would have no effect on the rest of the anchor texts on the site. How would you handle this, we can just get rid of this navigation because it's passing PR and helping the pages get spidered. Thanks in advance.
