Proving Bad Intent
-
Okay, so based on common sense re: author name and generic comment...
...I'm pretty sure this blog comment awaiting approval is aimed at getting users to a phony site in hopes they will make a donation to a fraudster impersonating Johns Hopkins.
But if you check out the URL, you'll see they are not idiots. It's an .edu address with a high DA.
Two questions:
- Are my suspicions well founded?
- How would I go about proving this, in a less clear cut case?

After study a few of the blog posts on your website now, and I truly like your way of blogging. I bookmarked it to my bookmark website list and will be checking back soon. Pls check out my web site as well and let me know what you think -
One thought is that it would add legitimacy to the comment, and get it approved. On some systems, the first comment needs to be manually approved, and after that the person can freely comment.
-
We all agree that the comment to my client's site is spam.
The issue is whether http://apps.pathology.jhu.edu/blogs/pancreas/?p=121 is also a spam site. I initially thought it might be sophisticated fraud: someone replicated actual content form an authentic Johns Hopkins site with the aim of raking in donations. But that doesn't explain the URL and seemingly legit links.
So I'm left wondering why the bad guy sent spam to my client's site, with an authentic site's URL. What was he hoping to achieve?
-
I don't believe that is the site being spammed. I believe the OP received a spam post on a different site, and the person posting the spam claimed that their URL was the JHU site.
-
That's wild. If it's spam, I'm not sure what's going on.
If you go the website that's being linked to, the site actually looks semi-legit.
I chased down a few of the links and the only external one I can find is to a guy who rides his bike to raise awareness of John Hopkins...and the "official" site has links from legit, personal blogs that are surely real.
And...the only outbound links appear on the ste appear to be completely legit to real places.
Maybe I'm missing something, but why would someone be spamming this site? (Assuming they weren't trying to build the authority before they built their links...which really wouldn't be smart anyways.)
Just so I know I'm not losing my mind...we're talking about: http://apps.pathology.jhu.edu/blogs/pancreas/?p=121 right?
-
If you do a search on part of the comment, you'll see it duplicated all across the web https://blekko.com/ws/+%22study+a+few+of+the+blog+posts+on+your+website+now,+and+I+truly+like+your+way+of+blogging%22
so it is certainly a spam comment. The URL looks decently legit, but the email is a gmail address, certainly a spam author name, and comment is spam. Not sure that they're trying to defraud anyone regarding JHU, but it is certainly spam and I'd just delete it and go on.

Yes it is a spam site.
Google the email address and it pops up on several spam trackers.

User Intent - Office Chairs & Content Writing
Hi I'm trying to look for ideas for content on office chairs. Any ideas on where to start with user intent for this type of search query? I'm using answer the public to gather some ideas. Some are good ideas, but I can't actually find any search volume for the phrase so then I'm unsure whether to devote time to writing something. Surely most people want to just find a supplier, buy the chair & they don't want a huge informational piece how to buy a chair. Our competitors are the likes of amazon, and a load of other huge companies with high DA - so I'm looking at types of content we can write, people are interested in reading about chairs, which is less competitive..I'm not sure that exists... Any help is appreciated 🙂

Duplicating relevant category content in subcategories. Good or bad for google ranking?
In a travel related page I have city categories with city related information.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | lcourse
Would you recommend for or against duplicating some relevant city related in subcategory pages. For visitor it would be useful and google should have more context about the topic of our page.
But my main concern is how this may be perceived by google and especially whether it may make it more likely being penalized for thin content. We already were hit end of june by panda/phantom and we are working on adding also more unique content, but this would be something that we could do additionally and basically instantaneously. Just do not want to make things worse.0 -
Link cloaking in 2015\. Is it a bad idea now?
Hi everyone, I run a travel-related website and work with various affiliate partners. We have thousands of pages of well-written and helpful content, and many of these pages link off to one of our affiliates for booking purposes. Years ago I followed the prevailing wisdom and cloaked those links (bouncing them into a folder that was blocked in the robots.txt file, then redirecting them off to the affiliate). Basically, doing as Yoast has written: https://yoast.com/cloak-affiliate-links/ However, that seems kind of spammy and manipulative these days. Doesn't Google talk about not trying to manipulate links and redirect users? Could I just "nofollow" these links instead and drop the whole redirect charade? Could cloaking actually work against you? Thoughts? Thanks.

Reversing the bad effects of a problematic 301 redirect
I have a previously very strong ranking page that is now omitted from the SERPs, but only for one specific keyword phrase. I think I found the reason, which I'll explain, and I hope I can hear some confirmation of my theory and a way to correct it. Let's use the following made up domain and keywords: Political blog SiteA.com had a few news articles about "Blue Widgets" (like 10 out of 10,000 pages). They became exceedingly popular, so on SiteA.com we created a reference-type page about "Blue Widgets" and in the news articles we already had about Blue Widgets we added rich anchor text (Blue Widgets) links that pointed to this new About Blue Widgets page. (long before we wised up about keyword rich anchor texts and Google!) After seeing how much traffic was coming to the About Blue Widgets page, we created a whole new site, SiteB.com, which was about Widgets (not just Blue Widgets), a page for each color of widget, and other pages about widgets. SiteB.com has an important and popular page, SiteB.com/blue-widgets, which is about Blue Widgets. We then 301 redirected the SiteA.com's About Blue Widgets page to SiteB.com/blue-widgets. This page in SiteB.com ranked very high (like #2, #3) for years. Two weeks ago SiteB.com/blue-widgets fell out of the SERPs, but only for the phrase "Blue Widgets". The page still gets lots of traffic from other queries, and even the "Blue Widgets" query will bring up other pages on SiteB.com. So, the only thing hit is the specific query "Blue Widgets" for the specific page SiteB.com/blue-widgets. It seems obvious to me that Google took the combination of a) a site that it probably no longer liked since we sold it (SiteA.com) since it's gone downhill, b) the rich keyword anchor text on SiteA.com pages pointing to the SiteA.com page optimized for that keyword, and c) then being 301 Redirected to a SiteB.com Blue Widgets page optimized for that same anchor text. I only discovered the SiteA.com redirects last week, which I had completely forgotten about, and had them removed right away. My question is, 1) if this indeed was the issue, now that the redirects from SiteA.com to SiteB.com are gone will my ranking eventually go back to normal? and 2) is there anything I can do to get Google to notice the change and have it go back to how it was?

Creating 100,000's of pages, good or bad idea
Hi Folks, Over the last 10 months we have focused on quality pages but have been frustrated with competition websites out ranking us because they have bigger sites. Should we focus on the long tail again? One option for us is to take every town across the UK and create pages using our activities. e.g. Stirling
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | PottyScotty
Stirling paintball
Stirling Go Karting
Stirling Clay shooting We are not going to link to these pages directly from our main menus but from the site map. These pages would then show activities that were in a 50 mile radius of the towns. At the moment we have have focused our efforts on Regions, e.g. Paintball Scotland, Paintball Yorkshire focusing all the internal link juice to these regional pages, but we don't rank high for towns that the activity sites are close to. With 45,000 towns and 250 activities we could create over a million pages which seems very excessive! Would creating 500,000 of these types of pages damage our site? This is my main worry, or would it make our site rank even higher for the tougher keywords and also get lots of traffic from the long tail like we used to get. Is there a limit to how big a site should be? edit0
