Why do rankings show differentley when checked from different computers
-
When I check for keyword rankings directly in Google or Bing, I find relatively high ratings. when my client checks at his location, he gets another ranking, much lower. What accounts for the difference?

Thanks to all. I think I've figured it out now. First time on here and am very impressed with the quick help.

It can be one of many reasons, however if you want to be sure... The SEOmoz RankTracker will suffice correct placements.
-
Use the SEOMoz rank tracking tool (http://ranktracker.seomoz.org/) for objective - non personalized or influenced - ranking results.
-
Google uses your unique IP address to give you the most relevant results based on your past search activity through Google’s personalized search. Your location can also play a role in this.
Not only is this the answer but I am providing the solution to help you get your accurate rankings:

Personalized results.
-
Location. If you are pegged as being in a different geographical location (San Francisco vs Palo Alto) you will get different results.
-
User History: If you're logged into Google, you will get results based on your personal search history, +1's, etc.
When I'm doing my rankings checks, I make sure I'm logged out and my location is set to the most generic for my use case (in my case 'United States', but yours may be a state or nearby metro region).

Are you and your client in the same location/ city? If not, that could just be the answer as Google gives different results based on location.
Also, are you 'logged in' to Google Account while searching? Personalized (logged in) search results are different from search results that show up when you are not logged in. For e.g. If you searched for a phrase, and clicked on your site, then the next time you search similar phrase, your website will show up higher than it actually is for majority of users (including your client)

One or both of you probably has personalized search results on, or localized search results on

Homepage Ranking Issue
Hi Folks, My site https://homeontheswan.com/ has been live for a few months now. Certain pages are ranking, even some number 1 postions for prodcuct pages with certain search terms. But our homepage doesn't seem to rank in Google when searching by brand name "Home on the Swan". The page is well optimized according to Moz. Any tips / insight into why this is happening would be much appreciated. Jamie

Can an external firewall affect rankings?
For security reasons we are now routing traffic through an external firewall cum CDN. Our server and domain IPs remain the same, but any request is routed through an external IP, which then forwards the traffic. Would our rankings be affected because of IP changes? Thanks Sam

How do we build rank on a domain with an offsite blog?
We have a site (domain y) that we'd like to integrate a blog into but our team doesn't have the bandwidth to do this. So, we've been exploring the option of building the blog in WP and hosting on a separate domain (domain x) and redirecting from domain y to it. My concern is how this affects or undermines rank value on domain y (effectively all the value from the blog resides on the blog domain x). How might we go about integrating an offsite blog into the core domain while maintaining search value? Is there a way? Thanks!

SERP Title shows up-with-dashes
Occasionally I see the our 'listings' on Google where the Title line shows up with dashes... like sony-professional-hard-drive - TapeandMedia.com It appears to be the URL shortened and rehashed. This example was after I searched for "Sony PSZ-HA1T" without the quotes. The title for this page is
Sony 1TB Professional Portable External Hard Disk Drive (PSZ-HA1T)
and the url is http://www.tapeandmedia.com/sony-1tb-professional-portable-hard-drive.asp Link to image: http://i.imgur.com/FmvAn6c.jpg Other searches (like "Sony 1tb PSZ-HA1T") yield normal looking SERP Titles Does anyone know why this happens and what I can do to avoid this? Sudden drop in rankings
Hi there, I've been working on this site for three or four months (it was a brand new site), and we were seeing some really great improvements in rankings. I've concentrated on writing lots of good quality content and building a network of links through blogging and social networks. Then, last weekend (6th October), we got completely wiped off of the results. We went from rankings 2,3 and 4 for our target terms to not being in the top 100. I assumed we'd been given a penalty from Google as we'd been SEOing too hard and removed a reciprocal links page we had and asked Google to reconsider. I just got a message back saying there hasn't been any manual penalty, so it's just down to the algorithm. I'm running am SEOMoz analysis, but so far it's just coming up with things like page titles too long and too many links on pages, which I can fix, but don't seem like something that would completely destroy us so abruptly. I think we really have the most and best content on the subject of becoming a model, which has taken a great deal of effort to put tgether, so this is crushing. If anybody can shed any light, I'll be extremely grateful, and I'd be interested to knwo if anyone else has experienced anything similar. Thanks in advance! URL: www.modellingadvice. info Kat

Malware ranking drops
Hi, One of our sites got hit with malware in November. We cleaned it up and sent a reconsideration request and no malware warnings are in WMT anymore. We still haven't seen an improvement in rankings even though people say it can take up to 90days? Organic traffic is down 40% and still dropping. Any advice? Thanks
