I have to echo what others are saying, just to be honest with you - even most decent consultants I know have minimums of about $1,500/month for retainer work. Most agencies won't deal with anything below $2,500/month (here in the US).
You could work with a freelancer (domestic or overseas) and get a decent chunk of hours for $500/month, but you'd be talking about a lower level of experience. If you can segment what you want and really lay out projects, I think that's fine. If you need someone to tell you what you should be doing and guide the process, it's going to be a lot tougher.
We do have a recently updated recommended list, but many of the firms are higher-priced:

I think that Portent Interactive out of Seattle does reasonably priced audits (starting in the $1,500 range) - that might be a good starting point, as @Nakul said. Spend your first 3 months of budget on a solid site audit, figure out where your gaps are, and then go from there. You can do some of the initial work yourself and then hire a freelancer/contractor to do some small-scale projects based on what the audit found.

I deal with budgets that small and have good success with them too..

All you need is:
-
A really good keyword research report (this is important because you don't want to target the wrong keywords with such a small budget)
-
Some basic on-page optimization (don't need to spend a fortune here, and most of the time I include this in my basic pricing)
-
Continual link building.. this is really where most/all of the money goes..
Feel free to contact me at corey@atmosmarketing.com if you need a quote or some help

I would recommend spending that money getting an SEO Audit done and based on the outcome, plan your SEO Strategy. You can try and do some of the stuff yourself and have an SEO company do the rest. I would also spend time educating yourself (specially since you already have this resource handy....SEOMoz.org

Hi Bob,
I just sent you a mail, Waiting for your reply on it.

Friend thats a really small budget for quality SEO services, I dont think so that you can find...I am also looking in this budget. If you find you can send him also to me? I tried freelancer but is the one of the most crappy sites. All are using xrumer and some other cheap robots.(i realized from the samples of work what they are sending to me, trying to convince me to award the project).stay away from there. dont bother to post project. If you want I can share my horrible experiences from the providers from there.AAAAAAAAAAAAA.....I hope that the next update of Google ban them all....I get sick of them...

Hi, I think most of us would consider that a small budget. Email me at bob@anseocompany.com.au and I'll see if my services would be a good fit for your company.

Best SEO way to implement multi language store
Hi, I have a magento 1.7 multilanguage store with the following structure: www.example.com/nl and www.example.com (Dutch) www.example.com/uk (English) www.example.com/de (German) As you can see the dutch language basically has two url and this gives problems according to Roger. Both urls show the same page and therefor duplicate content. Should i 301 www.example.com to www.example.com/nl ?

And would this not cause problems with the indexing because www.example.com is shown when searching for my keywords. I need to have all three languages to be indexed good and used only for the correct countries.0 -

Has anyone been to SMX or any other SEO Conference?
Hello All, I have been given the opportunity to go to several conferences. But like most SEO guys, I have a tone of work, and need to use my time sparingly. The one conference that has peaked my interest is SMX. I was wondering if anyone has been to SMX before and if they recommend it. Also if anyone has any other conferences they would recommend, preferrably on the east coast, that would be interesting please let me know. Any answers are appreciated. Thank you.

Picking a degree that will benefit SEO/IM career
I really had no idea where to place this question as there seemed to be no 'suitable' place. I do though feel that it is a viable question and would appreciate any responses that I receive. Essentially, I'm currently working full time doing digital marketing covering most general aspects as it is in-house and primarily local venturing to maybe 50-70 miles in the region of the local area. I'm doing SEO, PPC, Social Media etc. I'm certified in networking (I studied in Australia) and have my UK GCSEs along with a variety of other general certifications e.g. business. The college in the area where I work is offering a NVQ in digital marketing and social media so although I'm self taught I'm currently doing this once a month purely for the paper to recognize that I know what I'm doing. Anyway, getting to the point. I have the opportunity to pursue a degree long term with my employer. I've always had an interest in actually learning to code in a web development language (I can cope at the moment with PHP and do what I need to do) and I've also had an interest in developing iPhone apps etc. What degree would you recommend in aiding a career in SEO and Digital/Internet marketing in general?. To me it seems to boil down to either a marketing degree or a web development degree. Thank you in advance, I would love to hear your own experience and what you have a degree in. Thanks, Luke Hutchinson.

Is it smart to reveal your clients and projects in the Q&A forum? What about on your own SEO blog?
On one hand it seems like having my cake and eating it too: blogging about SEO using my clients as case studies in order to give them a couple backlinks. On the other hand it seems like asking for it from Google or from competitors. Got any advice? And what of mentioning actual domains and brand names when asking questions here in the forum? One one hand it seems like I'd get more specific advice, on the other hand, once again, it seems like it comes with some amount of risk. Any advice? Thanks!

New business acquisition for digital agencies from SEO and CRO
I have a nice simple question to ask all you mozzers out there, specifically if you work for a web design/digital agency. Does your agency get any new business clients through your SEO and CRO efforts? I'm asking this to try and build up a qualitative data set. I am responsible for all SEO and CRO at our agency for all clients along with our own website. Having increased traffic by over 200% in the last 12 months, and obtaining page one of Google for all our targeted keywords, we are still without any new business or ROI. We are fortunate enough to get a lot of great clients via word of mouth, a great sales team and client retention, I'd really like to know what the bigger picture is here? If I get enough data back, I'll make it into my first Youmoz post and share all the data with everyone :¬) I've now added a survey so you answer anonymously: There are only 5 questions in all, your time is greatly appreciated. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/New_business_acquisitions_for_digital_agencies Any feedback gladly welcomed. Regards Sean
