Website taken a hit?
-
We have recently (yesterday 12th April) taken a hit for our main keywords it seems that there is no constant fall but it seems to be the most competitive words as anything that ranked purely on content still seems to rank which makes me assume that we have just lost a lot of power from links (are SEO did build quite a few links from article sites he also built a few blog network links which we did not know till we got the webmaster message 3 weeks ago (24th may) and we have made him remove them all but some still show which a) he can’t contact or b) were scrapers).
But on the other hand we still have decent on site content and some good links from graphic design blogs (review articles) which would suggest a penalty as some sites with poor links and poor on site content are outranking us for a couple of our good keywords.
I cannot decide if this is a penalty, keyword anchor text penalty (this is wiping more power out than the bad links) or just devaluation of links (but as said before our good links are still much more powerful than the competitors out ranking us and with our content we should easily not have lost many places).
If I was going to come up with an idea it would be like the bad links have taken twice there power away from the site, so our on site content is still good but compared to medium on site and crap links they are out ranking us. (we did use a lot of anchor text with keywords in)
If this is the case if we build gooad quality review links, press releases and make them more natural not go for normal link building – articles ect would this help and has anyone ever dealt with this before and have any idea how to know what is happing and how long it might take to recover.

So here is what you need to do. Compile all this data:
- Export opensiteexplorer followed/301'd links to your root domain excluding internal site linking
- Get a list of any links you or contracted seo acquired and their respective landing pages into excel
- get a list of all your targeted keywords and their rankings over any dates you have (ex. I run weekly updates so I have a column for every week).
- Categorize all your keywords and landing pages on your site
Pivot out your rankings to see if a landing page type or keyword type dropped. If so, follow the trail and see if it correlates to any specific links you acquired or any specific anchor text you acquired.
Look at your link profile and see if you are too heavy in any specific areas or if you have any links that may be deemed shady.

Shaun - Also, keep in mind over-optimization. There where over 50+ Google algorithm updates in March alone & a handful of them where related to spammy on-page content and freshness. So if you have a lot of keyword stuffing or haven't added new content in a while, this could play a role in the drop.
Which leads me to the question, did you see a drop across all organic or just Google?
Hope this helps, cheers!

Shaun - Sounds like things are getting interesting.
First of all, think about what happened. The same guy that got you linked up to all the blog networks you are having fix the problem. Most of these guys are like robots ( but not Roger ) ...they just create as many links as they can so they can send you a report in excel showing you what they accomplished. Now you are trusting the same guy to identify the links and take them down. YOU NEED TO GET IN AND MAKE SURE.
There is an article I just read last night in the seomoz community, that will help you out.....first thing you need to do is a mini-audit to make sure you have identified any bad links. Read the article below. Dont get bogged down in trying to do anything. Look for some of the low hanging fruit....
http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/how-to-check-which-links-can-harm-your-sites-rankings
At the same time you should be building some solid natural links with anchor text. Absolutely now is the time.....if timing is important, then you should outsource some of it to reputable SEO people that will do solid natural link building. They can be doing it at the same time you are doing natural link building. You would always rather do it yourself if you have the time, but if things are busy and you need immediate results, you should reach out to SEO folks in the US and make some short term gains.
Good luck. Get your keywords back up to the top.

Our partners are using our website content for their websites. Do such websites hurt us due to duplicate content?
Hi all, Many of our partners across the globe are using the same content from our website and hosting on their websites including header tags, text, etc. So I wonder will these websites are hurting our website due to this duplicate content. Do we need to ask our partners to stop using our content? Any suggestions? What if some unofficial partners deny to remove the content? best way to handle? Thanks

Ranking drop after image compression across website.
Hi all, Just checked my website in Google pagespeed insights and most of our website pages were required to reduce the images file size for better page loading. So I have compressed the images using https://compressor.io/ and https://tinypng.com/ and replaced the images. Then surprisingly ranking dropped even score improved for all pages with image optimisation. What would be the reason? Thanks

Have we been hit by an update?
Hi Everyone : ) We have an E-commerce website has been getting less and less organic traffic each month since October 2015 after it had received a massive spike overnight! I can't see any logical reason for it or find any updates that would have caused this. Have anyone got an idea? I know I am not giving much information out but wondered if anyone else had seen a similar issue. aZ7F6YA

Does my website need the SSL Cert / HTTPS Update?
So, I own a car shipping company called Car Shipping Carriers ( www.carshippingcarriers.com ) and I am trying to find out if I need the SSL Cert / HTTPS for the site. I attached a picture that shows I dropped a HUGE amount of rank back in the beginning of August 2014 and that the SSL/HTTPS update happened at nearly the exact same time. I do have a quote box on my website asking for: Name, Phone, Email, Origin, Destination, Move Date, Year/Make/Model of Vehicle, and Carrier Type. I was unsure if I needed the HTTPS because I am not asking for sensitive data, but it seems that I might need to bite the bullet and update the site to HTTPS. What do you all think? Any expert opinion and/or advice? JWV4N1o

Does omitted results shown by Google always mean that website has duplicate content?
Google search results for a particular query was appearing in top 10 results but now the page appears but only after clicking on the " omitted results by google." My website lists different businesses in a particular locality and sometimes results for different localities are same because we show results from nearby area if number of businesses in that locality (search by users) are less then 15. Will this be considered as "duplicate content"? If yes then what steps can be taken to resolve this issue?

Website traffic dropped 50% after 14th November same day GWT reported a DNS error
HI there. On 14th November GWT reported a DNS error on my site I checked with my hosts but they said there was nothing wrong. I then went searching for answers and found it happened to lot of people on that specific day see http://moz.com/blog/was-there-a-november-14th-google-update. After that time my website traffic dropped by 50% over the period of a week and is still sitting on 50% of what it was. I then moved the site to VPS, had a few DNS errors - that were the cause of my hosts - so i moved back to shared hosting last weekend and now DNS issues are solved. However the original DNS issue is still unknown I dont know what went wrong and want to rectify issue. I dont sell ads and write original content 4 times a day. I have a miniscule bounce rate, my site speed is okay and i dont stuff keywords in my content although i was careless with my <alt tags="">so they could be considered keyword stuffing (and i have up to 10 images on one post). But i have been removing all the keywords in my images theres over 3000 posts so its taking time). My impressions have dropped from 10,000 a day to 2,500 and I have no idea why.</alt> My website has been building traffic consistently for the last 2 years. Only now has it crashed a bit. Have you any advice on what I can do to solve this problem or rather find the cause of the issue. Im not a pro seo person and do this blog in my free time so am not an expert on data analyzing etc.... thanks alot

Should you include Website Title in all page title tags?
We recently spent analyzing some of the best SEO software companies on the U.S. market fishing for the best practices in SEO and I saw one thing in common : They all had website titles in all the page title tags separated by " | " Is that the best practice for SEO or is it just for Branding? Interestingly enough, the website titles were completely unrelated to the pages' content or keywords. (Here's my personal opinion on what it looked like: "riding on a bicycle" | Ferrari ) But when I looked up the keywords ... ranked #1 or #2 spots, in some serious competition. (So in the example above, "bicycle" would be in the top spot)
