Remove Landing Pages?
-
Howdy Guys, I've just been listening to the latest edition of whiteboard Friday regarding the over-optimization penalty. I'm just wondering if we should remove alot of make specifc landing pages... For instance we have a landing pages for our top 20 cars... For instance "bmw keyword" or "audi keyword" What do you guys think? remove them and 301 the pages to the homepage? Thanks, Scott

The question I would ask is "What does your Analytics say?: First Review Like the others said, make sure if you are ranking now for them as well if they are bringing converting traffic... Keep them, if they are not ranking figure out why and maybe look for answers vs. just blowing them out...
GREAT Comments Guys... We all do not really understand where Google is headed but they are cleaning up the directory very aggressively within the last few months. Updates are always going to happen, but without looking at your own data things begin to be cloudy and people make the wrong descision based on thing said in all of these SEO articles around the web.
TEST TEST TEST..

Hi,
As Mark says a "Knee Jerk" reaction to a Google "Talking Point" is usually a bad idea in the Search Engine World - Not saying it is not important to listen to Google, but also have to take what they say with a grain of salt, and understand they have there own business to run with motives ect...
With that being said, Mark is correct - The way you have it is actually good for Search Engines and User Experience - As a consumer (and Search Engine) personally i think it would be better to get someone to the correct, quality non duplicate content "Landing Page" that has specific info for a specific query... Not a generic "Home Page"
So the way you have explained your information architechture, you are on the right path - the key is to just make sure you are not using "manipulatory" tactics to elevate your pages...
But as to what Google's term of the word manipulatory is, i think is opening more and more for interpretation by Google..
Hope this Helps!

Whoa!!!! Take a step back.....not a black and white conversation.
- Landing pages could be providing you a lot of value if you are getting conversions and converting traffic.
- If the landing pages have unique content they can add additional seo value.
- If the landing pages are all the same and you have only changed the car make....more of an issue.
- What we have done for a number of clients in the auto dealer area is created whats called long page landing pages. So what is seen on the screen win they first land is all the pertinent information for a call to action. If they decide to scroll down to the bottom they start to see much more detailed information about the cars....(less than 12% of our auto dealer landing page traffic reads down below the first screen) This would allow you to put more automobile specific content on the same page (color, model, engine horsepower, accessories, etc.) or (car reviews and other information).....this would create unique content and then actually do the opposite of what you are worried about, those 20 pages would be providing additional SEO value.
- If the landing pages are just there because someone thought they made sense and they aren't converting traffic, then it make sense to remove them.
Before you do anything why don't you do some AB or multivariate testing on the landing pages. If this is a new concept for you, use your google adwords website optimizer o create a small test and compare what the landing pages are converting at. Send some to your home page....send some to other landing pages and see what happens. This data will help you make the right choice.....
Hope this helps.

If a page ranks in the wrong country and is redirected, does that problem pass to the new page?
Hi guys, I'm having a weird problem: A new multilingual site was launched about 2 months ago. It has correct hreflang tags and Geo targetting in GSC for every language version. We redirected some relevant pages (with good PA) from another website of our client's. It turned out that the pages were not ranking in the correct country markets (for example, the en-gb page ranking in the USA). The pages from our site seem to have the same problem. Do you think they inherited it due to the redirects? Is it possible that Google will sort things out over some time, given the fact that the new pages have correct hreflangs? Is there stuff we could do to help ranking in the correct country markets?

Google indexing only 1 page out of 2 similar pages made for different cities
We have created two category pages, in which we are showing products which could be delivered in separate cities. Both pages are related to cake delivery in that city. But out of these two category pages only 1 got indexed in google and other has not. Its been around 1 month but still only Bangalore category page got indexed. We have submitted sitemap and google is not giving any crawl error. We have also submitted for indexing from "Fetch as google" option in webmasters. www.winni.in/c/4/cakes (Indexed - Bangalore page - http://www.winni.in/sitemap/sitemap_blr_cakes.xml) 2. http://www.winni.in/hyderabad/cakes/c/4 (Not indexed - Hyderabad page - http://www.winni.in/sitemap/sitemap_hyd_cakes.xml) I tried searching for "hyderabad site:www.winni.in" in google but there also http://www.winni.in/hyderabad/cakes/c/4 this link is not coming, instead of this only www.winni.in/c/4/cakes is coming. Can anyone please let me know what could be the possible issue with this?

Should We Add the W3.org Language Tag To Every Page Or Just The Home Page?
Greetings, We have five international sites around the world, two of which are in difference languages. Currently we have the following line of html code on the home page of each of the sites: Clearly, we need to change the "en" portion for the sites that aren't in English, but, should we include that meta tag in each of the site's pages, or will the home page suffice. Thanks!

Best practice for removing indexed internal search pages from Google?
Hi Mozzers I know that it’s best practice to block Google from indexing internal search pages, but what’s best practice when “the damage is done”? I have a project where a substantial part of our visitors and income lands on an internal search page, because Google has indexed them (about 3 %). I would like to block Google from indexing the search pages via the meta noindex, follow tag because: Google Guidelines: “Use robots.txt to prevent crawling of search results pages or other auto-generated pages that don't add much value for users coming from search engines.” http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769 Bad user experience The search pages are (probably) stealing rankings from our real landing pages Webmaster Notification: “Googlebot found an extremely high number of URLs on your site” with links to our internal search results I want to use the meta tag to keep the link juice flowing. Do you recommend using the robots.txt instead? If yes, why? Should we just go dark on the internal search pages, or how shall we proceed with blocking them? I’m looking forward to your answer! Edit: Google have currently indexed several million of our internal search pages.

Which duplicate content should I remove?
I have duplicate content and am trying to figure out which URL to remove. What should I take into consideration? Authority? How close to the root the page is? How clear the path is? Would appreciate your help! Thanks!
