Is my SEO strategy solid moving forward (post panda update) or am I doing risky things that might hurt my sites down the road?
-
Hey all,
WIhen I first started doing SEO, I was encouraged by several supposed experts that it was a good idea to buy links from "respectable" sources and as well make use of SEO experimentation offered on Fiverr.
I did that a lot for the clients I represented not knowing if this was going to hurt. But now after the latest Google shift, I am realizing that this was stupid and thus deserving of the ranking drops I have received.
In the aftermath, I want to list out here what I am doing now to try to build better and stronger rankings for my sites using white hat techniques only...
Below is a list of what I'm doing. Please let me know if any of these are bad choices and I will immediately dump them. Also, If i am not including some good options, please let me know that too.
I am really embarrassed and humbled by this and could use whatever help you can offer. Thanks in advance for your help...
What am I doing now?
*Writing quality articles for external blogs with keyword links back to sites
*Taking the above articles and spinning them at SEOLINKVINE to create several articles
*Writing quality articles for every site's internal blog and using keywords to link out to other sites that are on different servers - All articles are original, varied and not duplicate content.
*Writing quality, relevant articles and submitting them to places like Ezine
*Signing clients up for Facebook, Yelp, Twitter, etc so they have a social presence
*Working to fix mistakes with onsite issues (mirror sites, duplicate page titles, etc.)
*Writing quality keyword-rich unique content on each page of each site
*Submitting URL listings and descriptions to directories like JoeAnt, REALS and business.com
(Any other good ones that people can recommend that give good link juice?)
*Doing competitive research and going after highly authoritative links that our competitors have
That is about it...
HELP!!!
Thanks again

The opinions that you get on this will vary depending upon the content development skills of the person who is speaking and their tolerance of creating competition for their own websites.
I would not do any of the following.....

I would seriously start researching more about Panda and what it has done to the blogs as well as article based sites. Many blog based link boosting sites have been dropped, and are shutting down, many more are to follow if this trend continues. Posting to other link based blogs and sites like Ezine, Squidoo, and the like might just hurt you more in the future.
Google is going through and seriously changing they way that SEO has worked in the past. They are utilizing HUMAN raters that go through and rate sites at random by actually reading them and seeing them with human eyes, this rating information is then tested and built into the new algo changes. This means that if a human can read spun crap content then it is rated down. If you are linking to spun crap then those links are rated down.
Internal blogs are great if they are filled with unique content. about your services and products. Stop posting to other sites and blogs and get people to link to you by posting to your own. Write good content for your sties not other sites that just host spun content..
Twitter, Yelp, Facebook are good for social if people are going to use them for social....
Remember people can SEE what you are doing, a twitter account that is just blank is not s social site, Just like Facebook account with no activity. Not only do you have to maintain these social sites, but you have to post to them as well as INTERACT with your clients customers on them.

Some of what you're doing sounds ok, but I'd definitely stay away from the article spinners and the article directories. In short, don't pollute the web with crappy content that no human would ever read - Google is catching on more and more and punishing those who do.
For link building ideas and tactics, Jon Cooper recently put together an awesome post of tactics - http://pointblankseo.com/link-building-strategies - be sure to check that out.
Also, I'd focus on making onsite improvements - make sure your titles and meta are written well, aren't keyword stuffed. That your internal linking is solid and your pages are crawlable and configured properly. Try to improve on things like site speed, and markup your data using schema.
Bottom line is - try to create awesome pieces of content for your sites, and build relationships with others to market them and spread publicity.
Hope this helps

Should I delete older posts on my site that are lower quality?
Hey guys! Thanks in advance for thinking through this with me. You're appreciated! I have 350 pieces of Cornerstone Content that has been a large focus of mine over the last couple years. They're incredibly important to my business. That said, less experienced me did what I thought was best by hiring a freelance writer to create extra content to interlink them and add relevancy to the overall site. Looking back through everything, I am starting to realize that this extra content, which now makes up 1/3 my site, is at about 65%-70% quality AND only gets a total of about 250 visitors per month combined -- for all 384 articles. Rather than spending the next 9 months and investing in a higher quality content creator to revamp them, I am seeing the next best option to remove them. From a pros perspective, do you guys think removing these 384 lower quality articles is my best option and focusing my efforts on a better UX, faster site, and continual upgrading of the 350 pieces of Cornerstone Content? I'm honestly at a point where I am ready to cut my losses, admit my mistakes, and swear to publish nothing but gold moving forward. I'd love to hear how you would approach this situation! Thanks 🙂

Legit Editorial Placement vs Penalized Guest Posting
I'm planning to begin contributing to several different media outlets and blogs on the net, and hoping that I can get some decent placements for me and a few of my colleagues. Looking specifically at legit media outlets and corporate blogs with a structured and considered editorial process where we can contribute thought leadership pieces. In light of all of the Google algorithm changes surrounding guest blogging, I am curious if this would be viewed as legit editorial placements, or as guest posts that would either carry no weight or be penalized? Secondly, what are the considerations and value of including a high quality in-article link back to our site vs. a byline link, or both. Does anyone have any data or experience with this? Thanks in advance! Andrew and wondering if anyone has any experience or insights

New Service/Product SEO and rankings
Hello, fellow MOZers. We are a web design company, and we had SEO as secondary service for years. Due to changes in the company we started pushing SEO as one of our main services about 6 monhs ago. We have separate page , targeting that service, as well as case studies, supportive information pages, even SEO Center, which is like a blog about SEO only. We are not using black hat SEO, doing honest link earning and building, don't use keyword stuffing, everything is by the book. I understand that SEO takes time, especially for a company which has a footprint as web design company, not as SEO company. We are ranking very good for web design related keyphrases, however, we don't see any improvements for SEO related keywords. It always was and is between 25-30 SERP. At the same time, competitors, who are ranking on first page for SEO related phrases are pretty bad looking. Design-wise as well as blackhat-SEO-wise. Everything is keyword stuffed, UX is horrible, prices are ridiculous. So, do you guys have any thought/advise on how we can see results / why we are not seeing results. SEO Hosting and many dummy blog, is it still works ?
Hi, I want to keep update with the latest trend of SEO,
White Hat / Black Hat SEO | | theconversion
in one side, we know that google now more focus on-page rather than off-page,
the Question is, when we handle a big size of company, that we can't change easily,
the content inside the web, this will become a problem. do you have any suggestion about
this matters ? Second question, I still keep my SEO team to do this, 5 people, 1 people hold 7 .com website,
that hosted all in SEO hosting with different IP Class C, and 7 social network site. Everytime they
are posting a unique article and put link that targetting the money site. My Question is, is it still
work to do all of this ? so at the end of month, we have almost 70links that going to money site,
with composition of link, 50% exact match text, 30 partial match text, and 20% direct www. link today, it is still working, all the site that we optimize, going up to page 1. But I want to know about
the future, or at least in your country that more competitive rather than in my country (Indonesia),
what do you do for backlink that created from your farm. I also heard that, SEO Hosting is not use, the things that works is, when u posting an article, make
sure u post from unique IP address, not from same computer. Please give me enlightment, I truly open for discussion, thanks a lot0 -
Knowledge Graph SEO Factors
I notice when I search for my clients brand name it pulls up the Google local info and Google+ stuff, knowledge graph etc, as well as a section at the bottom, 'People Also Search For' and lists a number of the clients competitors. However when I search one of the competitors no Google local or knowledge graph stuff comes up. Client obviously wants to limit promotion of the competitors. Does anyone have any experience with this? I know Google Author rank seems to play a factor in knowledge graph results? Are the competitors doing anything on their end SEO wise? What can be done to limit this? Thanks for any help! jkn0BMT.png

Can I report competitor for asking to guest post?
I just had an email from one of my least preferred competitor's SEO company asking about guest posting. They are already totally dominating the SERPs where they have no natural reason for being. Is there anywhere to bring this to the attention of the search engines?

Is it possible that since the Google Farmer's Update, that people practicing Google Bowling can negatively affect your site?
We have hundreds of random bad links that have been added to our sites across the board that nobody in our company paid for. Two of our domains have been penalized and three of our sites have pages that have been penalized. Our sites are established with quality content. One was built in 2007, the other in 2008. We pay writers to contribute quality and unique content. We just can't figure out a) Why the sites were pulled out of Google indexing suddenly after operating well for years b) Where the spike in links came from. Thanks
