Has MozTrust predicted fall in Google rankings???
-
The definition of MozTrust is:
"MozTrust is SEOmoz's global link trust score. It is similar to MozRank but rather than measuring link popularity, it measures link trust. Receiving links from sources which have inherent trust, such as the homepages of major university websites or certain governmental web pages, is a strong trust endorsement."That being the case it is quite disturbing that a number of websites have been hit very badly by the latest Google algorithm changes that did indeed have very respectable MozTrust rankings.
Can I ask whether anybody has carried out any sort of analysis of MozTrust versus negative impact in Google rankings? The prediction would of course be that websites suffering from a lower MozTrust would have been hit quite badly by these recent changes.

MozTrust isn't quite a measure of "trust" in the sense of link quality, per se. It was designed to mimic TrustRank, a factor we believe Google uses to supplement PageRank. What MozTrust and TrustRank (theoretically - we can't see in the black box) do is to take a set of trusted seed sites and determine how close in the link-graph any given site is to them. If your site is closely linked to sites like CNN and WhiteHouse.gov, for example (I'm honestly not sure what's in the seed set these days), you're more likely, on average, to be a trustworthy site.
Of course, as with Google, this is just one of hundreds of potential ranking factors. One measure we've found useful in some cases is the ration of MozTrust to MozRank. If you have ton of raw link-juice (MR) but your trust level is very low (MR), then it's often a poor quality sign.
We tend to use DA/PA more than MozRank these days, as they're based on a more complex model. Still, none of these factors look at the actual quality of the linking site or the "spamminess", per se. MR/DA/PA are primarily measures of the strength of your link profile, and MT is just one measure of potential quality.
It appears that Penguin tweaked multiple factors in the Google algorithm and may even be use them in conjunction, so even if we saw Google's own data, we probably couldn't pin it to just one thing.

I understand the point you are making, but the argument is that all those websites that had substantial links from 'spammy sites' have been heavily impacted by the algorithm. Those spammy sites were very often visibly poor - we could identify many of them just by casting an eye over them.
My question remains then, surely MozTrust should have picked up these metrics and downgraded the MozTrust values for those websites linking from such obvious spammy sites? Otherwise, what is the point of MozTrust?
-
I can see in Webmaster Tools that one of my clients have a 100 or more dead links from spammy sites that are targeted at pages that never existed.God only knows where they came from.
So, the principal would seem to be - target spam sites at a competitor and hit his rankings.
Also, if someone were 'warned' with the abnormal-link-message from Google then one would expect a problem was looming. If no communication was received then one could assume 'no problem'?
Surely, the algorithm has fused in a few of it's recesses and we just need to wait for the circuits to be rewired by the Google engineers.

Great question.
My feeling is that the tools and indicators were based on the playing field pre-Penguin and pre the ground opening up and swallowing a ton of websites (ie all the 1 million plus warnings that were sent out for unnatural links).
They lag - again in my opinion. A dog chasing its tail.
Google has changed the game for many and what was once was not penalized is now being penalized.
No matter how anyone sugar coats it and talks about always focusing on content (all good stuff mind) - this was a significant change to the algo in the area that computes link value and relationships.
My feeling is that noone (in terms of the engineers of these tools) saw it coming and now the calculations that may go into these parameters may need to be also tweaked.
I can name many websites that had good MozRank that have been axed fromt he SERPs.
That's not criticism of SEOMoz. These websites also had good PageRank
To answer your question though - from the analysis that I have been carrying out there is NO CORRELATION between MozTrust and the websites that suffered. again - I have seen websites that have had high MozTrust go just as low ones have.
I must also note though - that these seems to be NOT domain related - but more page related.
ie most of the websites I have looked at - seem as if they are doing poorly all around - but it seems to be that the domain itself has not been effected - but more the page (unless Google has penalized the home page).
We have a client (an Author) who was ranking #1 on Google for one of her books. All natural links from people linking to her book. That page was up in the rankings for 4 years. Now it is not in the SERPs at all. Her other pages are fine and her domain name is fine - but Google seems to think the links to that book page where she sells the book were unnatural. So, in some rare cases it may be the entire domain - but in most cases it seems to me that it just appears that way - since webmasters affected were over optimizing or doing bad SEO - and now all the pages that used to rank for the keywords they went after so aggressively now don't rank.
This doesn't mean their domain is toast though - unless they did this to their main home page on the domain.
I'll stop rambling now
Carlos

MozTrust is something SEOmoz calculates and, while it's based on what could be expected to help you rank, it doesn't always correlate with what Google does. A website could have a high MozTrust rank but could be penalized for other issues.
Danny Dover actually suggests that you use metrics like MozTrust and Page Authority and compare them to Google metrics like SERP positioning and PageRank to discover if you're being penalized. A page that SEOmoz categorizes as having a high Page Authority but that has zero PageRank can sometimes be an indication that Google is penalizing the page or website.

Is there a tool that can rank multiple results for a single keyword?
Hi all, I have searched the web for a tool that can tell me if more than 1 landing page is ranking for a single keyword. I have noticed sometimes that a single keyword query can trigger up to 3 landing pages within the 1st SERP. I found an old bookmarklet from Lunametrics that might do the trick using Search Console data, but the link is no longer working. Any other pointers, or can Moz do this as well? Thanks!

HELP - Configuration Killing Me, Dying on Google, About To Give Up
My organic Google traffic just completely died and it is not Panda related. I really need someone to offer some suggestions because I am about to give up. This is going to be a bit complex .. Here is the skinny: I have several relatively new sites. My main site for the purposes of this discussion is smartwatchnews[dot]org and I host my sites on wpengine.com. My traffic was was slowly building and I was averaging 2000+ unique visitors per day on 8,000 highly ranked Google impressions. In addition, Google was indexing my new posts about an hour after they were made. After reading seoMoz in its entirety and subscribing to Moz PRO, I decided to streamline my site, and focus my content to provide a better user experience. Here are the changes I made: 1. For ease of administration, I converted all of my sites into a single multisite wordpress installation. For some reason, Google now has half of my pages listed on the master site smartwatch.smartfamily.wpengine.com, and not on smartwatchnews.org. I have implemented 301 redirects for the pages at issue hoping to fix this problem. 2. At the same time, I also streamlined my categories and tags and used 301 redirects to route users to the right pages. 3. Finally, I subscribed to Moz Pro, analyzed my sight, and reduced usage of my keywords to around 3%. I had not stuffed, but the focus of my site necessarily resulted in me using certain words frequently. Within one week of implementing the above-listed three tweaks, I went from getting 2,000+ visitors per day to ~200 and my Google impressions went from around 8,000 highly ranked per day to approximately 150 poorly ranked. In addition, Google went from indexing my site hourly to indexing about once per week now. I do absolutely no blackhat, link-building or marketing of any kind. Other interesting things I have noticed: 1. Several SEO companies have linked to my site recently ... for example, all of a sudden, chkme.com just showed up in Webmaser Tools with over 1,000 links to my site. I have no idea who they are. 2. Google Analytics shows that my site has an average page load time of 33 seconds! It has never taken me more than 2 or 3 to load one of my pages and I have Google PageSpeed scores in the 90s. I guess what I really want to know is, can I just create a bunch of quality content over the next few months and the problem will remedy itself, or is there an obvious problem that I need to fix? I am at my wits end ... can anyone offer any suggestions before I simply chuck the whole thing? Thanks in advance for ANY assistance, ideas, or simply "hang in there's" ;-(

What's the future of SERP Tracking? And... Is SEOMoz's SERP Rank Tracking in compliance with Google Adwords API Terms of Service?
My question is: Is SEOMoz's SERP Rank Tracking in compliance with Google Adwords API Terms of Service? Background: The reason I ask is because Raven Tools is now removing their SERP Reporting tool because it uses scraped Google position data. So, it looks like SEO's will either have to find a new rank tracking tool or find new ways to traffic the effects that rankings have on a website traffic volumes. For instance, there is a way to get the position a search results was in Google when it was clicked. We could create a secondary profile in Google Analytics for each client and use a custom filter to record the position that the keywords was in when the search result was clicked ( http://www.seomoz.org/blog/show-keyword-position-using-filters-and-advanced-segments ) Or perhaps we'll have to use Google Webmaster Tools' SEO Report to get data somehow ( http://support.google.com/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1308626 ) What are your thoughts on this? As you know, ranking data is still a great way to show clients if they are gaining or losing visibility in the search engines. It helps SEO's to report how effective their efforts have been. Because other ranking software companies uses Adwords API data to show the keyword search volume and advertiser competition of a keyword, they can not or eventually will not be able to use scraped ranking data any more. But, if another rank tracking tool out there doesn't need to be in compliance with the Adwords API TOS because they don't use that API to show search volume and advertiser competition, they can still technically provide their ranking data and not be violating any TOS, right? I'm just trying to understand the best way to continue reporting impact of organic keyword rankings on a website. Does the SEOMoz SERP Tracker comply with Adwords API? Is there another rank tracking tool out there that already is using Average Position data from the GWT SEO Report tool? Should we all just stop reporting rankings to clients altogether? Scott

A grade but no ranking. Can anyone help?
Hi there, I'm new to SEOmoz but familiar with SEO in general. I recently setup a new campaign for my wife's eCommerce business - www.toucankids.com. We optimized 6 pages for 6 well researched key phrases. These pages have been indexed by Google however they didn't show up in the on page reports section of SEOmoz. I've just worked out how to add them manually so i've done that. The good news is that all of the pages get an A grade so we must be doing something right. The bad news is that we haven't got a top 50 result for any of them which is quite disheartening. I'd rather not invest lots of effort more page optimisation if this approach isn't working. Can anyone offer any advice on next steps / fine-tuning? Thanks in advance! P.S. We're going through a process of link building to try and improve our domain authority at the moment so i'm hoping that Friday's linkscape update will give us some better news in that department.

Report: keyword difficulty verses SERPS ranking
Hi there, I've been using the PRO tools for a few months now, and find them great for revealing information for my clients, and planning our SEO approach. One report I've put together has been really helpful for a client, but I built it manually and it took ages. It lists, in a spreadsheet, keywords side-by-side with keyword difficulty, target URL, and SERPs result. Sorting by keyword difficulty or SERPS position has helped us to prioritise which pages to hit first. But it took a while to generate the report, and I'm wondering if anyone has a better approach, or if this kind of report can be generated automatically: http://www.cicada-online.com/app/images/documents/product-page-SEO-blank.pdf Thanks Mozzers!
