If we use content copied from another site ( assuming we have not plagerized), does it hurt our Google Rankings?
-
We have permission from another company to copy their content and use it on our site. This happens when we are describing a manufacturer's product and we copy pages from their site and add these pages to our site in order to describe the product we are selling. Is this considered duplicate content? Can this practice hurt us?

Todd,
Thanks for your response. Allow me to expand on our challange. We are an ACE Hadware store and sell hardware online. We have about 60,000 SKU's in our online stores. We have two problems when it comes to duplicate content.
First, all of our product content comes from ACE Hardware's catalogue. Since ACE Hardware also has an online store, all of our content will be exactly the same as ACE Hardware's. So it's duplicate.
Second, we frequently copy manufacturer's information and insert it into our site to help decribe a produc't features and benefits. So once agasin it duplicate.
With 60,000 SKU's it's not possible to rewrite all the copy, besides how many different ways can you describe a hammer.
Thanks,
Paul

Thanks for looking into it. The post you reference is indeed interesting. Looks like Google is taking the canonical attribute pretty seriously. I guess we'll just have to observe the changes for now.

I actually spent quite a bit of time last night looking this up because I thought I had read about this happening. To be honest, I can't find anything. I have found some posts, such as this one, where canonical errors were picked up and adversely affected a site's results. But I can't find a specific example of a site that copied something like manufacturer descriptions and referenced the original source in a canonical tag, then being deindexed. Perhaps I mispoke.
That said, you're right, things are pretty confusing sometimes. A lot of people are in positions like Paul and rewriting product pages to be entirely unique is very costly. If I were Paul, I'd eat the costs of hiring a copywriter to push out new product descriptions rather than take a chance with the algorithm. It would be painful, but if e-commerce revenue is a significant portion of his business it might be worth it in the long run.
-
I've never heard of a page getting de-indexed for something like this. Do you have an example? I'm actually very interested in this topic. There are so many eCommerce stores in the exact same situation as Paul.
After Penguin, I'm just not sure what to think anymore.
-
You might avoid penalties, but you risk getting the page de-indexed altogether because Google thinks that the "canonical" page is on the manufacturer's site. Assuming this is a product page, de-indexation would probably suck.
-
Using a canonical URL to point to the original source of the story should avoid any penalties from Google, correct?
-
I would add a slight caveat and say that if the copied content is a majority of what appears on those pages, you might be fine.
-
Yes, this would be considered duplicate. It's debatable whether or not it will hurt your website though - especially since the other company published the content on the web before you. You may want to look into Google's experimental Meta Tags to specify the original source of content here:

I'm honestly not sure if this would actually help the situation though. I'd recommend writing your own content if you have time.... anyone else care to expand on this?

Duplicate Content
I have a service based client that is interested in optimizing his website for all the services that he provides in all the locations that he provides them in. For example: Service 1, location 1 Service 1, location 2 Service 2, location 1 Service 2, location 2 He wants to essentially create an individual page for each of the above, but i'm concerned that he will be penalized for duplicate content. Each of the pages would have the keyword in the url, page title and within the main body of content. We would certainly alter the content somewhat, but not sure how much a difference this would make. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I allow authority sites to republish my blog articles, which then outrank me
Hey everyone. This is my first question here, I apologize if it has been covered before. I have a health and nutrition blog [authority nutrition] that has been up since December 1st, 2012. I've managed to write quite a few viral articles which have given me a bunch of natural links and a domain authority of 49, which I think is pretty great for such a new site. Haven't done any link building and everything is 100% white hat. Getting good rankings and good traffic already, so I can't complain. My only (1st world) problem is that sometimes major authority sites (DA of 70-95) republish my content. I always say yes if they ask me first, but some of them just republish without even asking. My articles are always indexed on my blog before they get republished, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. These sites always clearly link to the original URL, but they often tend to outrank me for the keywords I was targeting in the articles. They tend to rank in the top 5, but my original article is nowhere to be found. I plan on continuing to allow these sites to republish as I get powerful links and good traffic from them, but it's a bit frustrating that I don't seem to get the credit as the original source. I've already set up Google Authorship, but it doesn't seem to help. Is there anything I can do to make sure Google recognizes my article as the original and chooses to rank my site instead of the authority site that simply republished my article?

Duplicate listings content
I've been listing our business on various business and wedding directories most of which require a short description of the business. I've written up a "boilerplate" description which is fairly similar to one we have on the site. If I use this content on multiple listings sites will it cause me issues with google seeing it as duplicate content and finding it difficult to decide which pages to rank? Most of these sites are supplier directories so I don't expect people to site search them for our business they are much more likely to browse categories but will it affect organic results for our actual website? Should I be writing a different piece of copy for each listing which requires a company description to avoid any issues?

Will a comment section on my site help with seo
I have never been a fan of comment pages such as the sun http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/4783642/bruce-willis-appears-on-the-one-show-in-awkward-interview.html but i was told the other day that not only is it good for the reader but it is also good for seo and increase the number of times that google would visit the page and i would like to know if that is true. if you have added a comment section to your articles i would like to know if you have noticed any change.

Is it possible to over create/post content?
My company has signed up with a vendor to help write content. They are going to be supplying 50 articles per month so we'd basically be adding 2 or more articles per day. Is that too much or is that okay as long as it's quality content?

Duplicate content on forums?
I am creating a forum. I am concerned that when I create the forum, users will copy content from other places to post onto my forum. How negative/bad is this in terms of google eyes? I am concerned when people copy press releases and re-post it to the forum. Should I make a rule that all content must be typed and not copied? Or is a little copying okay?
