Company Blog Vs External Blog
-
Hi there,
We write articles for our blog on a regular basis, maybe two times per week. One of those articles I usually place on an external blog first getting some external links pointing into my product pages and using a rel canonical on that article on my blog pointing to the external post, so that the external post get's all the credit. The reason I put this on my blog is I use this to point to from my email marketing activities.
The question is, do you think this makes best practice? trying to get more out of this blog post.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your reply.
So do you advice on hosting these original articles on my own blog rather than an external blog? If so, does that mean that internal links have more value than external links? What If the external blog post was high authority?
Thanks

Ultimately, you're only get links from one additional site (the number of links is far less important than your linking root domains), and it's very likely Google will see the connection and not value those links much - they won't penalize it, but they may turn down the volume. Meanwhile, you're basically splitting your back-links, social presence, and promotional efforts. Any links to the external blog are all getting funneled into one linking domain. If you pointed them directly to your main site, you could actually have more links, in Google's eyes. I can't say that there's never a situation where I would house a blog externally, but it's rarely a plus for SEO.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, it's really trying to get more out of the article by placing it on an external blog for backlinks then having it on our own blog for our visitors ie email marketing activities etc. My feeling reg SEO is that I can get more link juice from the external blog.
I think what Jeffery talks about is something a bit different, I am talking about doing 2 things for the one article, this is something a bit different. He also says "If your write great content, you can earn links from external sites, which is potentially more valuable and seems to be what you are looking for." Using the practice that I am doing is surely doing this, although not naturally, but still achieving the same affect.

Build the blog onsite, your domain will get the benefit from the unique content helping overall rankings, you can still build your internal anchor text links, if the content is good enough your pick up shares/likes/tweets (social signals) and maybe even some backlinks from other blogs resource sites.

Gary,
Both tactics have their advantages and disadvantages. You do get inbound links from your external blog, but you also need to consider the benefits of using the blog on your site. When a reader goes to you can get the traffic on page. When a reader goes to your site, they can potentially become a customer.
I think the response by Jeffery Tull here http://www.seomoz.org/q/which-is-better-for-linkbuilding-internal-or-external-blog really sums up the pros and cons of your practices.
Best of luck

Subdomain vs Subdirectory - Specific Case: A big blog in a subdomain
Hi. First of all, I love MOZ and learned a lot about SEO by reading articles here. Thanks for all the knowledge that i received here. I read all the articles about "Subdomain vs Subdirectory" in the MOZ community and I have no doubt that subdirectories are the best option for a blog. But, the company that I work now has a blog with more than 17.000 articles, 1.000 categories and tags, hosted on a subdomain structure. The website has a Domain Authority of 78 (I am working to improve these numbers) and the blog subdomain has the same (78). We had 2.7 million hits per month in the blog and 4.5 million hits per month in the site. I am advising the company to change the blog structure to subfolders inside the domain, but I'm finding resistance to the idea, because the amount of work involved in this change is enormous and there is still the fear of losing traffic. My questions are: Is there any risk of losing traffic with the amount of articles we have? What do we probably get if we change the blog structure to subfolders? Could we have increased authority for the domain? More Traffic? How can I explain to my superiors that we would probably have increase traffic for our keywords? Is there any way to prove or test the gains from this change before we run it? Thanks in Advance.

Blog Content Displayed on Multiple Pages
We are developing an online guide that will provide information and listing for a few different cities in Canada and the US. We have blog content that will be pulled into each different city's blog articles page. Some articles are location agnostic and can be displayed for any city, and other articles will only be city specific, and only appear under a particular city. www.mysite.com//blog/seattle/article1

www.mysite.com/blog/portland/article1 From what I know of SEO, it seems that this is a perfect example for the use of canonicalization. So for article that will appear in multiple city guides, should there be a tag that points to a home for that article www.mysite.com/blog/article1 Thanks0 -
Blog - subdomain vs. subfolderq
Hi everyone I work on an ecommerce site and I'm trying to get more content together for the site & blog. The development team want to put the blog we have on a subdomain of our site, my question is - what is better for SEO Subfolder vs. subdomain I've read a couple of articles to say subfolder is better and a subdomain needs a lot of management to build up authority itself? Thanks!

Blog snippets on homepage a potential detriment to rankings?
Hey guys, I realize similar topics have surfaced before, but mainly related to duplicate content penalties, which is not my concern in this case. My client is parsing blog snippets to the home page; actually 3 large snippets consisting of of approximately 200 words each. They create at least one fresh blog post per month pertaining to the specific industry. I realize this practice has widely embraced to satisfy the "freshness factor" but I am concerned it could be hindering the ability for the home page to rank for our two targeted phrases. It would seem that by continually rotating the blog snippets which contain content related to the industry, but not necessarily relevant to the home page's targeted key phrases - combined with the fact that the home page has very slim static content - the bots are attempting to assign new taxonomies of information on a monthly basis. My thoughts are to create a decent block of static content highly-relevant to the home page's target phrases, while reducing the amount of info. contained in the blog snippets, to perhaps only a headline and date. Comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Merging two existing company sites into one
Hi Moz community, I have recently started a new job for a Fire & Security company in the UK to help with their non existent SEO efforts. Currently they have two separate websites. One of the websites is for their services and the other website is for their eCommerce store selling fire alarm equipment etc. The eCommerce store is higher up in the SERPs and overall has a lot more links. It also uses a better branded domain name. As I have never attempted such a project I have a few questions. The current eCommerce store is hosted and maintained by another web company which uses their bespoke CMS. What I want to do is take the service website and merge it with the ecommerce domain, however the service site runs on wordpress, which I want to continue for its flexibility. The service page wants to be the new homepage with a link on it to go to the store. I just cant get my head around the whole operation so if anyone could give me some advice to point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks

Sidewide footer links to latest blog posts
Dear Friends I hope you can answer my questions. We are launching a new site and on the footer (sidewide) we list all new blog posts (limit 5 links - blog title), do you think we have any problems with that part of the website? I am concerned because all new blog post title will appear on all pages' footer and it will be marked as spammed. We just want visitors to be noticed about new blogs post on our site. Thank you,Tran

How does Google Webmasters decide what order to show external links?
In "links to your site" how does Google Webmasters determine the order of the URLs? By influence? Quality?
