Strange meta description shown in SERPS
-
Hi there,
I recently stumbled upon a strange phenomenon in the SERPs. Here's the situation:
A customer’s website is ranking for a keyword with the root domain. Strangely the actual meta description (as implemented in the source code) is not shown. Instead Google takes the H1-Header and a part of a short element from a contact form.
Any clue/hint, how this could have happened and can be changed?
Sorry, that I can’t name the domain and the keyword (in German), but I hope, the above explains the problem.
Thanks in advance and cheers from Germany

All the very best

No, there's only one relevant meta description for every page. The snippet used by Google is less relevant than the one provided in the Meta Description. But I think, we've found the problem and wait what the recrawl shows in the SERPs.
Thanks again for your help/input.

Hi Khem,
and thanks to you, too.
I think we found the problem with the hint of checking for other important areas.
Take care and cheers from Germany

Is the snippet Google is using less relevant than what you've provided in the META DESCRIPTION or is it still okay? As description isn't used for rankings it won't harm your SEO, but could impact your click-through if Google's choice is not as hot for encouraging clicks. They don't always make the best decisions.
The only other thing is to make sure you have only one meta description per page. I'm hoping that sounds obvious, but it occurred to me that I have seen a site with more than one, so Google makes its own mind up.

Generally it doesn't happen, but you can check with Meta Tag 'Syntex', may b there is any error.
another reason can be, that meta tag has just been created and will be indexed soon.
another reason, webmaster has deliberately instructed to not to show that latest cached screen shot by using:
Besides, The description snippet that Google picks to show in SERPs would the mis of various chunks of text from the page, which include the search terms. If the page meta description fits exactly the search terms, then it may be used as is. Otherwise Google can check other important areas/keywords/section in website, like bold keywords, H1 tags, etc.
Please Note: The description meta tag is not only used for indexing and ranking purposes, it also serves as AD Copy to your visitors in SERPsSo, the Google will pick the most appropriate content only. Hope it answers you query properly

Hi Tom,
thanks. The contact form text is in no way relevant to the actual query. That would be my first guess. Neither it has a wrong H-tag or something like this. Anyway, thanks again and cheers.

Hi Martin,
thanks for your quick reply. Yeah, I observed only a few cases when Google ignored the actual given Meta Description.
We checked the Meta Tags and they are different for every single page and the start page. But you're right, we should have a second look and wait for the re-crawl.
Thanks again and cheers from Germany

Depending on the query, Google very occasionally decides to override the meta description to make the SERPS snippet more relevant. As far as I know there is no way to tell Google to always use the meta description. How relevant is the contact form text to the query?
-
The only instances I've come across of Google ignoring a META DESCRIPTION is when it decides that something from the website's content is more relevant than what has been written in the META DESCRIPTION.
I don't know if this is others' experience though?
Review the meta tags and ensure they're not spammy, they are unique across all pages and are a valid summary of the page's content and then wait for re-crawling to see if it makes a difference.

Google Increases Titles and Meta Descriptions Length
So, we now know that Google are changing the Title and Meta Desc length limits to 70 and 200 respectively. Does this mean we all need to jump to immediate attention and modify all our current pages OR, do we wait?

New to MOZ and so far love tools but need some quick tips on title, keywords and descriptions
First of all:
On-Page Optimization | | nickcargill
I am excited about using all the MOZ tools! I just got back my webcrawl and have found
a lot of issues that I am working on. I am a Vacation Rental Property Manager with 150 properties, all different. 90% of my pages have the same keywords and descriptions and a lot of same page titles
too. I can change all of these by adding a few fields in my database and then
populating the meta information dynamically. For Example: <title>Big Bear Cabins | Big Bear Cabin Rentals - Chateau Alta Vista Cabin</title>
Chateau Alta Vista, Big Bear Cabins, Big Bear Cabin Rentals
Chateau ALta vista is a Big Bear Cabin with four bedrooms, three
bathrooms, it is Big Bear Luxury Property. If you notice the Title, keyword are dynamically populated from the database using the
property name of Chateau Alta Vista. The description is an extra field in the database that I just implemented that I can customize per property. I have a few questions, but here is more information: I also have 5 or 6 related pages
to each property. Pages Like general information, photos, calendars, book
Question 1): Is the best way of doing my titles, keywords and descriptions. Any concerns or recommendations. I have read, do not even use keywords anymore. Question 2) I have other pages that show maybe 8 or 10 photos. So is it ok to do the following; Title <photos of="" big="" bear="" cabin="" chateu="" alta="" vista<="" title="">Meta Keywords <photos of="" big="" bear="" cabins="" chateu="" alta="" vista="">Meta Description <check out="" photos="" of="" big="" bear="" cabin="" rentals,="" chateua="" <br="">Alta Vista, etc Currently, I have some archaic page naming with database driven url parameters such as</check></photos></photos> http://destinationbigbear.com/property_Detail_v.aspx?propid=669 and at worse http://destinationbigbear.com/Property_detail_v.aspx?propid=669&rate= $1,127.10&checkoutdate=07/13/2014&beds=4&firstnight=07/11/2014&nights=2 I do not have he ability to to full url encoding such as http://destinationbigbear.com/cabins/chateau-alta-vista but I can do http:/www.destinationbigbear.com/big-bear-cabin-info.aspx?cabin=chateau%alta%vista Question is what do I do... If I do change the page names I will lose the history of property_detail_V.aspx which only has a Page Authority of 21, but if I change the page name and dynamic navigation of my website will I not lose all my authorities, if so, is it worth doing it? My highest keyword ranking is 30 which is terrible. Nick0 -
The company brand name does not show in SERP
Our company is ranking no.1 for brand keyword, however, when you try to find it by two words(with space between) then all those shows up and the website is nowhere to find. Any suggestions on how to solve this without the need to be ranked for something related

Meta Title Pipes and Spacing
I've been doing optimization on a clients website and want to make sure I'm maximizing my characters. Does anyone have any feedback on the spacing in between the pipes ( | ) ? IE: Internet Marketing Company | Denver SEO | Brand Name Do the spaces before and after the pipes play a role in whether the search engines can distinguish the keyword or is it all considered one word if there is no spaces such as: IE: Internet Marketing Company|Denver SEO|Brand Name Any information will be super helpful. Thanks for your help!

I do not want all my META descriptions to be unique.
Hi, I have maybe 20 categories (new) that I really like to have the same Meta description for all of them. The category names call out the use of their respective products. but, all of these categories are related to a much bigger global initiative. I don't have enough space in the title to discuss the individual terms as well as the broader project, so I would like the META to say something like "Products related to <this thing="" my="" customers="" care="" about="">from</this> However, I am extremely paranoid about adding 20-25 meta descriptions that are identical, because Google. Am I overthinking this and being paranoid about Panguin and Penda?

ECommerce Product Meta Descriptions vs. Product Descriptions
Wondering if using on-page product descriptions as the individual product meta descriptions is a best practice for an eCommerce site? Instead of writing two product descriptions (one regular and one meta), I am thinking if the product copy is SEO rich, we'd be good to use just the one for both purposes. Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? Seems that many companies follow this practice. Thanks!

Best meta tite - description writing tool
Hi I am in the process of writing meta titles and meta descriptions for a clients product portfolio. I have the complete list exported from the cms system in to excel. I know I can add some clever logic to build the meta information but for this purpose I want to do this manually. Does anyone have a editor online or an excel sheet that shows you the charactor limits when writing the titles and descriptions. This would be handy if someone has, otherwise it's a case of having to write the excel sheet to do this, not that hard to do but i thought i'd ask the question.
