redirect 404 pages to homepage
-
Hello,
I'm puting a new website on a existing domain. In order to not loose the links that point to the varios old url I would like to redirect them to homepage.
The old website was a mess as there was no seo and the pages didn't target any keywords. Thats why I would like to redirect all links to home.
What do you think is the best way to do this ?
I tried to ad this in the .htaccess but it's not working;
ErrorDocument 404 /index.php
Con you tell me how it exacly look?
Now the hole file is like this:

I'm very confused about where the 404 fits in - are these dead pages? To re-capture the link-juice, you'll need to 301-redirect (which it seems like you're also putting into play). In some cases, if the pages are gone or never existed, just let them be gone. If you take every single URL everyone could ever visit to the home-page, you may generate so many 301s that Google starts to get suspicious. We've seen some issues with this lately. In many cases, it's also just not a good user experience.

You should have RewriteEngine : RewriteEngine On and you should be able to access the .htaccess
have you tried using any of the tools in the URLs below
http://www.htaccessredirect.net/
&
This site talks about best practices of implementation you really just need to upload it to the FTP once you've made the changes using the tool in the URL above

Let me know if I can be of more help.

Ok, what Thomas is saying I will consider for some special pages but how do I technically do implement the redirects to home in .htaccess
ErrorDocument 404 /index.php is not working for now!
Is it correct?
RewriteEngine : RewriteEngine On
Do I have to ad something else to .htaccess ?

I think I have information that may help you Our little more I have comprised a hope will help you.
this tool will help you quite a bit in the described situation

404 page should include a link back to the home page or site map of your website so users can quickly get back to what they were searching for. A search box, if you have a site search, is also a good idea to add to a 404 page. Other then that, keep the page minimal, remove distractions and get the user off the 404 error page as quickly as they got on.
Keep in mind most users may not be so savvy when it comes to Internet jargon so simple explanations in English are key! Although, keeping it minimalist does not have to mean "boring". The steps to make a custom 404 page are simple and this site can explain in detail how to create one depending on your server.
301 Redirects
If you have old pages on your website that you want to remove or rename, use a 301 redirect to preserve search engine rankings and pass on backlinks and/or page rank. You can even redirect whole websites into new ones. It is easy to do and is very search engine friendly.
The term "301" stands for "moved permanently". It is created by using a .htaccess file. Follow this guide to learn how to implement many different types of 301 redirects. When pages are deleted instead of redirected with a 301, they turn into 404s (Not Found Pages).
I want to give credit where credit's due this information directly above was referenced from this website http://www.internetmarketingninjas.com/301.html

I would spread the redirects around as much as possible. If you can give link juice to not only your homepage but all pages your page rank and thus Google search rank will increase once the 301 redirects are indexed by Google. I agree strongly with what Sven Witteveen has said below and would be very inclined to agree with him.
I hope I was of some help to you.
Sincerely,

Hi Igrizio,
I'm not entirely sure but could it be that you're redirecting to //index.php instead of /index.php?
You can use this website to see the the statuscode and any redirect locations of a website.
Best of luck,
Sven Witteveen

301 Redirect Only Home Page/Root Domain via Domain Registrar Only
Hi All, I am really concerned about doing a 301 redirect. This is my situation: Both Current and New Domain is registered with a local domain registrar (similar to GoDaddy but a local version) Current Domain: Servers are pointing to Wix servers and the website is built and hosted with Wix I would like to do a 301 redirect but would like to do it in the following way with a couple of factors to keep in mind: 99% of my link are only pointed to the home page/root domain only. Not to subdirectories. New Domain: I will register this with wix with a new plan but keep the exact sitemap and composition of current website and launch with new domain. Current Domain: I want to change server pointing to wix to point to local domain registrar servers. Then do a 301 redirect for only the home page/root domain to point to the new domain listed with wix. So 301 is done via local registrar and not via Wix. Another point to mention is it will also change from Http to Https as well as a name change. Your comments on the above will be greatly appreciated and as to whether there is risk in trying to do a 301 redirect as above. Doing it as above it also cheaper if I do the 301 via the wix platform I will need to register a full new premium plan and run it concurrently to the old plan whereas if I do it as mentioned above will only have the additional domain annual fee. Look forward to your comments. Mike

What is the impact of an off-topic page to other pages on the site?
We are working with a client who has one irrelevant, off-topic post ranking incredibly well and driving a lot of traffic. However, none of the other pages on the site, that are relevant to this client's business, are ranking. Links are good and in-line with competitors for the various terms. Oddly, very few external links reference this off-topic post, most are to the home page. Local profile is also in-line with competitors, including reviews, categorization, geo-targeting, pictures, etc. No spam issues exist and no warnings in Google Search Console. The only thing that seems weird is this off-topic post but that could affect rankings on other pages of the site? Would removing that off-topic post potentially help increase traffic and rankings for the other more relevant pages of the site? Appreciate any and all help or ideas of where to go from here. Thanks!

Has anyone experience with deoptimising a homepage to alter landing page?
Our home page is ranking for a group of search terms even though we have dedicated landings pages for them that have higher on-page scores. The home page is optimised for a base search term, i.e. "Product", and the landing pages for variations, so "Product Variation A", "Product Variation B" and so on. The home page has a slight higher PA than the intended landing pages. We are tempted to de-optimise the home page, however, the fear is that we simply lose our positions entirely. Anyone tried this before? THANKS

301'd an important, ranking page to the wrong new page, any recourse?
Our 1,300 page site conversion from static html to Wordpress platform went flawlessly with the exception of 1 significant issue....an old, important, highly ranking page was 301 redirected to the wrong corresponding new page. The page it was redirected to is about a similar product, but not the same. This was an oversight that slipped through. It was brought to my attention when I noticed this new page was still holding the old page's rankings but the bounce rate skyrocketed (clearly because the content on the wrong new page was not relevant). Once identified, we cleaned up the redirect. My fear is that all the juice built up on the old .html page that ranked well has now permanently been passed to an irrelevant, insignificant page. -Is there any way to clean up this mistake? -Is there anything I can do to assist Google in associating the correct 'new' page with correct 'old' page after the wrong redirect was initially set-up? -Am I going to have to start from scratch with the new page in terms of trust, backlinks, etc. since google already noted the redirect? Thanks!

410 pages
Do you need to optimize a 410 page like you do for 404 pages? What does a visitor see when a page is 410 compared to a 404?

My landing page changed in google's serp. I used to have a product page now I have a pdf?
I have been optimizing this page for a few weeks now and and have seen our page for up from 23rd to 11th on the serp's. I come to work today and not only have I dropped to 15 but I've also had my relevant product page replaced by this page . Not to mention the second page is a pdf! I am not sure what happened here but any advice on how I could fix this would be great. My site is www.mynaturalmarket.com and the keyword I'm working on is Zyflamend.

Does title text of homepage effect ranking of sub pages?
Question is pretty much summed up in the title. I realize that title text on a specific page can effect the ranking of that page. But what I'm getting a feeling of lately is that google uses the title text of your homepage to effect the ranking of the site on a whole. Thoughts?

How do I fix the error duplicate page content and duplicate page title?
On my site www.millsheating.co.uk I have the error message as per the question title. The conflict is coming from these two pages which are effectively the same page: www.millsheating.co.uk www.millsheating.co.uk/index I have added a htaccess file to the root folder as I thought (hoped) it would fix the problem but I doesn't appear to have done so. this is the content of the htaccess file: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^millsheating.co.uk RewriteRule (.*) http://www.millsheating.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index\.html\ HTTP/ RewriteRule ^index\.html$ http://www.millsheating.co.uk/ [R=301,L] AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
