Leveraging a second valuable domain, which has no content currently.
-
Hello All,
Wow, people answer very quickly, concisely and are well informed. Very impressive.
I have a question that may be a little different. I have a current site which ranks well, and has lots of links etc etc..
1. http://www.symbolphot*.com ** * replace the * with an o**.
Key search term for this site: "B*ston Wedding Photographer"
The second site i own:
2. B*stonWeddingPhotographer.com is currently empty.
I can do whatever i want with this site. I was thinking that since my site is mostly images, i could start a duplicate wordpress blog with the same images, but different page text and alt tags to the same images.
Obviously, since 'b*ston wedding photographer" is the phrase i want to rank #1 for, how should i go about leveraging the power of the URL? Do you have alternate suggestions beyond duplicating image content? I don't really see a way around that as it's ultimately the images i'm selling to potential clients.
And the last part of my question is, how strong are my chances of ranking #1 for "Bston Wedding Photographer" while publishing good content on Bstonweddingphotographer.com ?
-
There's a good idea. Turn the B*stonWeddingPhotographer.com site into a review site.
-
Thanks folks! Now i sit here wondering what to do with the extra domain.... hmm it's a highly relevant domain and lots of folks probably visit it by default. I'll have to investigate a good use, i suppose.
-
I do know of several examples of small businesses that have been able to get multiple sites onto the first page for competitive terms, but they certainly did not get there by just throwing up duplicate content.
Usually what they do is turn one of the sites into a review site that points to several options, but suggesting that theirs is the best. However, I tend to agree with the other commenters who say that keyword URLs aren't as important as they used to be and that you would need to have a ton of resources to manage and continue to build the two sites.
But don't put up duplicate images, that is just asking for a manual slap from the search engines.
-
Ok, I guess it's what I expected. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? I'd love to hear any alternatives.
-
I would put all of my efforts into a single domain until I am dominant in that niche.
Lots of people think that they will toss up a hotdog stand of a site and use it as a link platform to their original site.
Actually, the smart way is to use a powerful site to power a hotdog stand - but that should not be done until you have dominance in the niche.
-
Be very careful with this. If I am understanding this correctly you want to use both domains for your Boston wedding photographer company. Google is not going to like to see 2 websites with similar content for the same company. It’s going to look like your manipulating the search engines to get a bunch of sites in the top 10 for your keyword for the same company.
Also, your putting to much Enphasis on your keyword URL. Years ago that did have an effect on your rankings but Google has deminished that ranking factor. If i were you I would stick with the site you have been working on.

Domain switch planned - new domain accessible - until the switch: redirect from new to old domain with 307?
Hi there, We are going to switch our local domain oldsite.at to newsite.com in November. As our IT department wants to use the newsite.com already for email traffic till then, the domain newsite.com has to be accessible for public and currently shows the default Apache page without useful content. The old domain has quite some trust, the new domain is a first time registered domain (not known by search engines yet and no published anyhow). The domain was parked till now. I am aware of the steps to take for the switch itself, but: **what to do with the newsite.com domain until everything is prepared for the switch? **I suppose users or search engines find the domain and as there is no useful information available it harms us already. My idea was to 307 redirect newsite.com to the oldsite.at but the concern is that this causes problems as soon as we switch the domain and redirecting with 301 from oldsite.at to newsite.com? Do you have any objections or other recommendations? Thank you a lot in advance.

Meta canonical or simply robots.txt other domain names with same content?
Hi, I'm working with a new client who has a main product website. This client has representatives who also sells the same products but all those reps have a copy of the same website on another domain name. The best thing would probably be to shut down the other (same) websites and redirect 301 them to the main, but that's impossible in the minding of the client. First choice : Implement a conical meta for all the URL on all the other domain names. Second choice : Robots.txt with disallow for all the other websites. Third choice : I'm really open to other suggestions 😉 Thank you very much! 🙂

Is it safe to 301 redirect old domain to new domain after a manual unnatural links penalty?
I have recently taken on a client that has been manually penalised for spammy link building by two previous SEOs. Having just read this excellent discussion, http://www.seomoz.org/blog/lifting-a-manual-penalty-given-by-google-personal-experience I am weighing up the odds of whether it's better to cut losses and recommend moving domains. I had thought under these circumstances it was important not to 301 the old domain to the new domain but the author (Lewis Sellers) comments on 3/4/13 that he is aware of forwards having been implemented without transferring the penalty to the new domain. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/lifting-a-manual-penalty-given-by-google-personal-experience#jtc216689 Is it safe to 301? What's the latest thinking?

Content linking ?
If you have links on the left hand side of the website on the Navigation and content at the bottom of the page and link to the same page with different anchor text or the same would it help the page (as it is surrounded by similar text) or is the first one counted and this is it?

Will an active forum on our domain help with rankings by fresh content?
We have a very large ecommerce store with little fresh content being added, accept through a web blog on the sub domain. We are thinking of moving over our blog that is on another domain entirely and has a lot of active users. But first I want to make sure it will actually help the domains rankjings, and second i'm concerned about the duplicate content on the old forum if we move it to the main domain. Should we just copy over all the content, 301 the old forum URL's to the new ones? Thanks much!
