Open Site Explorer - Finding 404s from my competitor's external linking Root Domains
-
I want to find websites that have linked 404s to my competitors. My goal is to contact webmasters who have linked to my competitors with 404s, but I cannot figure out how to get Open Site Explorer to give me that data.
I can easily see this in GWT for my own site, but I need this for my competition instead.
Does anybody know a quick way to get this information?

You could also look to Blekko or now Bing for some of that link data, in addition to SEOmoz, and run it through a status checker like Eppie described.

Depending on how large the OSE list is, you can run it through a free bulk status checker like this one: http://www.seoautomatic.com/unique-tools/bulk-url-checker/
That will return the status codes of the urls you drop in but it only accepts 50 rows per batch. You could easily create a similar tool using a scraper that would accommodate more URLs per run -- using PHP you'd just have to use the curl function to pull in the pages being linked to, then use curl_getinfo($curl_handle,CURLINFO_HTTP_CODE); to grab the response code. If it's a 404, you write that entry to an export file.
Hope that helps!

Missing Inbound Linking Domains
For some reason, our websites seem to be missing a number of authoritative inbound linking domains which seems to be a primary driver in lowering our domain authority as compared to our competition. Does anyone have any feedback as to why this might not be populating or is there something additional we need to do to have these show up? If it doesn't show up in MOZ is it likely that Google might also not be seeing these as inbound link domains? Thanks as always MOZ Community!

Open Site explorer shifting results - which to trust and not to trust?
I was doing a search on Open Site Explorer, comparing my site with competitors in the field. When looking under the Page Specific Metrics tab I first got the results that I had no internal links whatsoever, and 8 external links in total. I had a page authority of 34, and so on. Then I saw it suggested that my domain was redirecting to www.mydomain.com/ (a slash at the end), even though this is wrong. But I clicked the "see this url instead" and now the results changed a lot. It now shows that I have 72 internal links, and 6 external links. And also a lower page authority of 28. Now you might say it is because I changed the url to the one with a slash, but I changed back to the one without a slash (and now I don't get the message about the redirect). What's up with open site explorer? What results should I trust?

Link building from keyword domains
Hi all, I am currently working on link building to our site http://www.betxpert.com which has a number of keywords I am targeting. I have become aware that domains with the keywords are available. We (in Danish) target the phrase "ekpert tips" and the domain www.eksperttips.dk is available. Would it be a good thing for us, to register this domain and do one of the following things: a) DNS forward traffic to our main site b) Build a small blog with minor content and linking to the main site with text links with the tekst "ekspert tips"? c) Simply do nothing, save the money and spend it otherwise... Hope someone can give me a sound advice. Best regards, Rasmus

Obtaining External Links
What is the best way to obtain External Links for a website? I have seen using the Open Site Explorer that my url is ahead of most of the competitors in all areas except this one. What is the best method of generating these links, outside of emailing 20K people and asking for a back link? Any suggstions?

Great idea to get back links in short order; however the links would be unrelated. . Is it worth the effort . BTW, it's a white hat method. Should I proceed?
I have come up with a very creative way to get some great back links using white hat methods. The problem is that the back links to the site would be to an interior page or external promotional website which then have links back to the main website. What kind of value for the main domain would this potentially achieve. What are peopLes thoughts on this idea?

How do you find out what (and when) new websites are linking to your site?
I may be missing the obvious here, but is there any way (a programme or site) of seeing what new links come into your site? Obviously as anyone who works in SEO, I like to see which links we have got with the work we put in contacting webmasters, etc. But is there a better way than just manually looking through ALL the links? Any help will appreciated.
