Fixed horrible title tag on home page, and lost ranking. Will it come back?
-
I was helping out someone on their site and its home page ranked on page 2 for their term, and the title tag was horrible. It was 160 characters long with lots of near repetitive keywords ([keyword] - adjective [keyword] - adjective [keyword] - adjective [keyword] etc.) -- typical title that Google would penalize when it got around to it.
So I created a title that made sense, for the keyword, and that followed the best practices of Google recommendations. Now it's dropped off the index. (EDIT: sorry, still in index, just not even in top 1000)
Is this something I should not have done? I was just trying to keep them from getting slammed.
And, how long should I expect it to take to get my ranking back?
This is the only page title I changed.

Interesting that in DuckDuckGo.com and StartPage.com it is showing with the new title wording, and in increased position (#3 on DuckDuckGo.com). Still not up there in google.
Any idea if this means anything?

"it would not drop off the index"
My apologies, I did say that but I meant it dropped off the rankings, not even in top 1000 now) I edited my question now to be more accurate.

I'd have to agree that doing what you have done should not have impacted the rankings so dramatically. I have seen minor fluctuations when modifying title tags but not to this extent. I would give it a few days to see if things settle down. If you stil see the same problems after a few days then I would suggest that something else is likely the cause of the dramatic drop in rankings.

Based on what you answered:
I would ask the site owner about question one. He should have a firm idea of other ranking drops or possible penalties. What other sites are doing is also a factor, but I don't see how a page would drop off the index due to title tag modification.
I have seen pages move up and down by tweaking the title tag. In my experience, when you make the title tag cleaner and less repetitive, the page ranks better. Even if it were to move down, it would not drop off the index. That seems bizarre!
But, I am speculating without knowing the site or keyword the page is ranking for.

- Has the site lost rankings for other pages?
I don't think so.
- Has anything else been done that might have an impact on rankings (i.e adding links, removing links)?
Nothing else has been changed.
- When you paste the URL in Google, does it come up as the first search result? If so, it was not dropped from the index.
Yes.
- Is the keywords still at the beginning of the title tag?
Yes.
- Is there another page on the site that now ranks for the site? You may have more than one page on the site targeting the same keyword.
No

Changing the title tag is not something that would cause that page to drop off the index. A fewof questions:
-
Has the site lost rankings for other pages?
-
Has anything else been done that might have an impact on rankings (i.e adding links, removing links)?

Benefits of having a Title-Tag that fits on the SERP
Has anyone seen any case studies that show that title-tags that fit on the page (http://moz.com/blog/new-title-tag-guidelines-preview-tool) have a higher ctr than title-tags that don't fit? I know it's been said that keywords past the pixel limit still matter but if there's a major benefit to ctr for title-tags that fit....Any thoughts?

How to rank well on 2 keywords - 2 separate pages or 1 combined page
Hi, I have a website about allergy. We ar developing new content, and through keyword research I have discovered that "dog allergy" and "cat allergy" are both very common searches. However, the cause, and symtoms are very alike for these 2 types of allergy so it would make sense to combine the two allergies on one page. So my question is: What do I choose to increase my chances to ranke the best I can for both "cat allergy", and "dog allergy"? Should I develop 2 separate pages for cat & dog allergy or should I do a combined page? (We would of course review the texts so no duplicate content/text would be used if we chose to have 2 pages) I would be so greatful for your advice!! Kind regards, Jeanette

If I put 'keyword/url' combination to 'stop run weekly', will it dissapear from the summary page in the on-page grader?
The summary page of the on-page grader chooses the keyword and url combination itself. Now if I choose another combination, I would like the former to dissapear from the summary page. The only option is 'stop running weekly'. But will it disappear from the list also?

On-Page Report Card: Whats up with the TITLE of the page?
Started to fix the SEO issues on a customers website. When I run a "On-Page Report Card" It says that the title of the webpage:

www.visbymaklarna.se/visbymaklarna.html Is "visbymäklarna - Ditt förstahandsval på gotland." But if I check in the source code of the webbrowser the title should be:
name="title" content="Vi är mäklarna på Gotland som sätter människan i första rummet" /> (Actually this is with special encoding for the swedish characters. The title in coded text is: "Vi är mäklarna på Gotland som sätter människan i första rummet") Anyway the title of the webpage source code and the title of what SEOmoz reports is different. Why is that?0 -
Splash page - is it possible to rank well?
Hi there, I have a website with splash page - http://veda4.com/ . It's trully cool looking, the owner of our company wants the home page to be this way. But is it ok from SEO viewpoint? Can it rank well for keywords. All my SEO strategy were not using splash pages and I am not sure what should I change so it work with splash page also. I myself won't choose splash page but my boss trully liked it.

Fewer keywords in title tag?
Hello, I have a title tag that includes three keywords and has a total of 59 characters. The third keyword is not very important. If I eliminated the third keyword, leaving the first two (for a total of 48 characters), would the ranking value of the first two keywords increase? Does including the third keyword dilute the value of the first two? Thank you!

If i only want to rank for one specific keyword and use it in all my page titles, will it negatively affect my rankings?
If i want to rank highest for one specific keyword (virtualization management, for example) and use that keyword in all the titles on my website, will that negatively affect my search rankings? SEOmoz is telling me that i should use unique titles for my different pages to ensure that they describe each page uniquely and don't compete with each other for keyword relevance.
