Site size affecting page rank?
-
I've noticed the sites that rank above me for certain phrases are much larger than I am. Here are the results of the 'site:' command for the top 6 results for a phrase I want to rank for (yes, I know that 'site' is not exact):
- 32,600 pages
- 8,760,000 pages (wikipedia)
- 684 pages
- 148 pages (domain name equal to search phrase)
- 1400 pages
- 120 pages (my site)
Now, I appreciate that larger sites have more stuff to link to, and therefore have more juice flowing to them from external links. BUT, is it also true that they are generating lots of internal juice by having so many pages? I've looked at the PageRank algorithm and understand that the max page rank for a site (with no external links) is based on the number of pages of that site and how well linked they are).
My question is: based on all the experts here, is number of pages in the site an important factor (assuming good on-page SEO), or does it really come down to number of external links (from relevant sites with appropriate anchor text, of course)?
Can a small site with tons of external links rank above much larger sites? Has anyone beaten Wikipedia for a phrase they were targeting? How did you do it? Thanks!

I just looked up for a few examples, see attached images.
DISCLAMER : I didn't do SEO for any of those websites and those results were returned from google.CA from Quebec, a province where french is commonly spoken in Canada.
May be the fact that fr.wikipedia.org has lower quality content and lower domain authority makes it easier to outrank. Still, websites that outrank it are far from being well optimized.

Thanks for the pointer; hadn't seen that. I'm encouraged you've seen small sites outrank wikipedia for generic phrases. If you have an example of that you could post, that would be great. I'd love to look at the small site and see what they've done. Appreciate the help!

Hi Mike,
Here's an other question on the same topic with an answer from Rand :
http://www.seomoz.org/q/is-the-size-of-a-website-a-ranking-factorPersonally, I think it can help, as long as it is quality content that will gather links and that you keep a good site architecture.
I also seen small websites (<100 pages) outrank wikipedia on generic single word queries with a small amount of links.
So, of course, there's no magic formula, it's not all about the number of pages, domain authority, page authority, on-page stuff, external links anchor text or something else. It's all about having a little (or a lot) of everything to look authentic.
Best regards,
Guillaume Voyer.

Too many on page links
Hi i'm new to MOZ, after sacking my SEO consultant due to the penguin update. My site position isn't fantastic right now for my national and local search terms 😞 The first problem i have is tackling too many on page links. I understand it should be 100 or less, unless users would benefit more. Looking at my links i have up to 200 on page links (which i know are not beneficial or user friendly). If i give you an example this page has 208 links: http://www.drivejohnsons.co.uk/blog/page/3 Heres another one with 157 links: http://www.drivejohnsons.co.uk/author/admin/page/2 Here's one that isn't associated with my blog that has 188 links: http://www.drivejohnsons.co.uk/testimonials On average most pages excluding the blog have around 120 links per page and i know thats to do with my Nav Bar - which i will sort out. My question is: Because the majority of these high link pages are associated with my blog, will that affect my site SEO performance? If yes, does anyone have any suggestions as to how i can reduce the total links on each page within my blog? The more i blog, this number is only going to increase 😞 Im using wordpress. I was just wondering if any of these imports would help ? | Blogger | Install the Blogger importer to import posts, comments, and users from a Blogger blog. Blogroll | Install the blogroll importer to import links in OPML format. Categories and Tags Converter | Install the category/tag converter to convert existing categories to tags or tags to categories, selectively. LiveJournal | Install the LiveJournal importer to import posts from LiveJournal using their API. Movable Type and TypePad | Install the Movable Type importer to import posts and comments from a Movable Type or TypePad blog. RSS | Install the RSS importer to import posts from an RSS feed. Tumblr | Install the Tumblr importer to import posts & media from Tumblr using their API. WordPress | Install the WordPress importer to import posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags from a WordPress export file. | If anyone can help, i would very grateful.

Fresh set of eyes on this page please. Why isn't it ranking?
Morning all, I'd really appreciate it if you could take a quick look at this page and see if I'm missing something here. The targeted keyword (wedding favours) is pretty competitive and the rank had been slowly improving until recently and we've now slipped to 25th on Google UK. I've added a "Pay with a tweet" button for our eBook which has been pretty well received (around 100 downloads) so far so the social side is better than our competition. I've also written a few guest blogs with links back to the page from a variety of sources. Here is the page analysis on OSE. If you could take a quick look and let me know if I'm missing anything here, it would be most appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Observation on Linking to other sites
Hello, I have a blog for one year now and in the overwall is going great. In all this time it was an awesome way to discovery some SEO mysterious and learn with experience wich in my point of view is the best way to do it. Now my observation is about links to other sites and what does that do. At the present I have about 35 keywords in the 3 first places in Google, bing e Yahoo. All good. I notice that the posts that I have links (dofolow) to other sites are performing better then those ones that only have internal-links. And Its curious that this change as starting to surface in Dezember of 2011. Now the confusion is about the SEOmoz observation towards external links. "You should avoid having too many (roughly defined as more than 100) hyperlinks on any given page. When search engine spiders crawl the Internet they are limited by technology resources and are only able to crawl a certain number of links per webpage. In addition, search engine algorithms divide the value of some popularity metrics by the amount of links on a given page." Now hell with this observation I say. Its working for me and for now on I will actually apply this SEO strategy when Im talking about a subject in a post:) What do you guys think? Whats your experince on this? Regards, Pedro M Pereira

Google penalizing sites because of press release pages?
Does anyone know of situations i can look up where Google penalized a site because of press release pages (hosted on a non owned major site like prweb or whatever), where the prweb page obtained back links from a group of sites that Google felt was part of a "farm"?
