Why isn't SEOMoz using Wistia's social sharing feautes?
-
I noticed that SEOMoz does not make use of Wistia's social sharing buttons such as a Facebook Like button.
Is there any disadvantage to using the like button via Wistia rather than copy/pasting it in static HTML?
-
Thank you both for clarifying!
-
Wistia's sharing buttons still share the URL where the video is embedded, not the individual video - just like the buttons we have implemented. We just don't want to have redundant sharing buttons all over the page, so we skip Wistia's sharing buttons in favor of the buttons already in our blog template.
-
If you only share the video, not the page, then where does the FB like point back to? My site or Wistia's?
It might be splitting hairs, but I would imagine having them share the page is more beneficial, as you control everything around the video, including calls-to-action, other recommended videos, etc.
Perhaps I'm misinterpreting this?

Ben, you are absolutely on the money on this one (not surprised!). Because our blog template automatically adds sharing buttons to each post, and videos are published within blog posts, using Wistia's sharing buttons on the videos themselves would create redundant sharing options on each page.
From an SEO perspective, there is no advantage to using buttons one way or the other - you simply need to consider factors like do you want users to share the video, or the entire URL? From a UX standpoint you don't want to have sharing buttons all over the place, confusing people, which is why we're not using the Wistia sharing feature

Ben from Wistia here. I can't speak directly to why SEOMoz doesn't use all of the social sharing buttons available. That being said, I can give a little insight as to how the Social Sharing features work within Wistia so that you can make an informed decision for yourself.
First, there are basically two classes of Social Sharing buttons that can be enabled. The first class is Wistia based buttons that we build directly and directly affect the video. These include:
- Embed - provides an iframe based embed code to embed on third party websites
- Stats - provides a link to a stats summary page for the video
- Email - a mailto: link that allows someone to send the link to your page
- Logo - an image and link that points back to your site
The other class is third party buttons for various social services. In these cases, we implement the button code as specified by the various social services. These include:
- Digg
- Tumblr
- Stumble Upon
- Google Plus
All of the third party buttons are designed to share URLs, not individual pieces of media, such as videos. As a result, when you click the Facebook Like button on a Wistia video, you are actually Like-ing the page.
For all of these buttons as well as the Email button, we wire the URLs to the first page where the video is embedded. This way, even if your video gets embedded by various people (via the Embed button), all social activity will still point back to you.
As an example, let's say you embed a video on your website with the embed button and the Twitter button. Someone comes along and uses the embed button to get a copy of the video which they embed on their blog. One of their readers comes along and views the video. After enjoying the video, they click the "Tweet" button. The link (and text if configured) that gets Tweeted out will point back to your site, not the blog on which it was viewed. This allows your videos to get more social reach beyond just your website.
Again, I can't speak directly to SEOMoz's social strategy. It may be that they already have social buttons on their blog posts in other locations and feel that buttons on the video would be redundant or distracting. That being said, I hope this helps explain a bit more about how the the social sharing buttons work and gives more insight as to when you would want to use them and when you wouldn't.

Redirect social media links to https?
Hi fellow SEO-ers! One of the sites I'm responsible for uses a Twitter or Facebook feed on most of their pages, next to their unique content. As the tweets (twits?) and comments in some of these feeds are old, they still refer to the old Twitter and Facebook-domains using http (instead of https). These links are all automatically 301-redirected, but still make up ca. 9% of the links on the site. Do you think that this affects SEO? I doubt it, because I suppose that Google has seen this many times and understands that these links are still pointing to the same content. Although my client is prepared to write a script to auto-update all these links, I think it won't make a difference. What do you think? Thanks for your feedback!

Why does someone's FB page rank so highly?
Hi Everyone, i recently ran a non-personalized search and saw that this facebook page https://www.facebook.com/tampapersonalinjurylawyers ranked very highly for both "personal injury attorney" and "tampa personal injury attorney." The page has very few likes, and they don't even post that often. From my limited knowledge, that leaves me guessing it's because its a quasi-exact match facebook page, but that can't be right...can it? (Ranking screenshot is attached) Thanks, Ruben GO4N11x

Facebook: How do you post to a brand's page, as your own brand page?
Eg, if you are an administrator of "Funco" which has a FB page, how do you post on the wall of "Followerwonk" as "Funco", not your personal FB account?

What is the best Practice for Adding Social Buttons to your Sites from SEO Perspective?
Hey Guys, As you all know there are many social buttons out there that can be added to your website. Facebook Like button, Twitter's Tweet and Follow buttons, Google +1, and AddThis buttons are just a few to mention. All of these buttons can be customized, eg. you may choose to point your FB Like button to your homepage, to a specific inner page, or to your Facebook Brand Page. Same with your +1 button. Moreover, you may choose to add Twitter and Google+ Follow buttons to your site's pages, and so on. My questions are very simple: Is there any best practice for adding social buttons to your site from SEO perspective? if yes, Which social buttons to add? Where is the ideal place for them on your page? Where these buttons should be pointing to? your homepage? specific inner page? or to your official brand pages? Thanks in Advance, Yogev.

I can't see the new Facebook Insights.
Is anyone else having trouble seeing the new Facebook Insights page? If I click on Insights I get a message at the top that says, "Take me to the new Page Insights" but if I click on it it does nothing. Apparently people are "talking about me" and I can't see the new stats!

What's affect more SEO between number of Facebook "Recommend" of number of fans of the facebook fan page?
I'm wondering what's the most important number in facebook that affect more the SEO of a site: It is the number of "Recommend" that your site have received or It is the number of fans the facebook fan page of the site have? Also does this really affect SEO or not? If you can provide some data, statistics, link to post or whatever it would be very nice. Thanks for your help

Let's talk about Facebook Comments!
Have you seen Jen's post on the SEO Blog today about Facebook? I am really interested in testing out Facebook comments. Are any of you guys using them? Here are my thoughts: Benefits: Will make it easy for people to comment (assuming they have a facebook account) Their comments are shared on their wall and on their friends' news feeds so you could potentially get a LOT of exposure and traffic. Potential Drawbacks: Who controls the content? If facebook decides to pull this feature will we lose all of our comments? What is the moderation like? Do I get to approve which comments are posted? Some people may be reluctant to comment if they know that their friends are going to see what they wrote. What do you guys think? Are you going to use FB comments?
