Google+. Good for all businesses?
-
Hi guys,
My question/discussion is regarding Google+ and whether or not I should advocate creating an account for one of the websites I work in-house for.
This particular website focuses on unlock codes for mobile phones and isn't a service that consumers would really want to connect with - which is what Google+ appears to be a vehicle for. It is a one off purchase website, and not something people will use regularly.
On the face of it Google+ offers very little for a company that operates in this fashion and makes most sense for B2B businesses.
I feel that by potentially creating a Google+ presence we are in fact attempting to manipulate the search rankings because it isn't a networking site that makes sense for our business and there is actually very little real reason for us to get involved with it.
I don't think Google would penalise any business for getting involved in their product, but we would only be using it to benefit our ranking position. Surely that is against everything Google themselves stand for?
Also, what real benefits have you guys got out of using Google+? If I am to create a presence there, this is the ammo I'll need to use to convince my manager with.
Thanks a lot.

Purple Indigo,
Robert's right on most accounts. Something that you might also want to think about is the "Google Rel=author" tag. If you're going to be using any kind of blog on this site, using the "Rel=author" tag that's tied into Google+ can help you rank higher in the search results and also give your brand some identity. I know you've mentioned that you don't consider this a product that you would want to use to connect with your audience, however the push in the search rankings might be something of interest.

Will people ever review your product/service? A small amount of info in Google + would not hurt and it can help.

For me, I disagree with it making most sense for B2B. First, it is simply a way of verifying your existence and controlling it first. Then any connection. IMO it is not a marketing tool per se. Frankly, I don't even want to go down the social media marketing road here..... If you have people giving you a plus it will have a minor impact on your SEO, again, IMO.
I feel that by potentially creating a Google+ presence we are in fact attempting to manipulate the search rankings because it isn't a networking site that makes sense for our business and there is actually very little real reason for us to get involved with it.
I really don't do any networking from our corp site nor do our clients per se. So what about 'manipulating' search rankings??? As long as you play by the rules is there something wrong with wanting to get as many customers as possible? Are you doing something you shouldn't be? etc.
As to the follow on to that paragraph about what Google stands for, well they want a good experience for the user and they don't want a lot of trash on the web. I am with them on that. They compete with other companies and Google+ is, at least, a partial response to that competition. I don't think they did it just so they could hug themselves at night.
Just like with Places, you need to own/verify your listing and get the info in it. I do not see a need for a full scale spend to over brand it. Make it clean, nice, be sure info is correct, etc. That is important and your manager needs to get it no matter what.
Hope this helps,
Robert

Facebook Business Page Optimization: Awards Section
Hi everyone! I am looking to add my clients awards to the Facebook business page to add a little "pow" and give myself a "look what I did" talking point at my next meeting with them. I was comparing their page to the competition, and I noticed the competition has a lovely Awards section under their About. Do you know how/where this is hiding? My clients business page is rather new (a little over a year old), so I'm leaning towards this was an old feature that Facebook has not hidden from older pages. Anyone have any idea on where this is hiding? fXVWEwM

Requirement full bleed image share Google+?
Hi everyone, Im sort of a Google+ nutter and I wanted to figure out exactly what is required for a full bleed image to appear for +1 share on the page itself. I got it figured out and I think it requires: canonical url og:image image wider then 506px type article or page (microdata format) But sometimes it seems that pages without a canonical url still show full bleed image when shared as link when I insert the url directly into a google+ post. My question is if this could be a cached version of the page where it had a canonical url? Don't really know if that anyone is interested but I made a simple tool that checks if a page meets requirements for having a full bleed image when share as link on Google+. Think I nailed it pretty close but can't seem to get the full bleed image to appear for the tool itself do:) Please dont ask. It's driving me mad already. http://www.googlewiki.nl/seo-checker/check-fullbleed.php Try it. Take a blog post url, check it with this tool and then see for yourself if it's accurate. If not I would like to hear very much as it would help me pin point it better! Examples of pages with specific no no factors for you to try are:

2013 - Google Places/Business to Google Plus Local
Hi, Much of the reading I've done has suggested that existing Google Places/Business Page (with "About" and "Photos" on top) will be automagically "upgraded" to Google Plus Local pages (with "About" and "Photos" and "Reviews" and all the other Google Plus items). However, is there a way to force an upgrade? I have a Google Places/Business Page and when I go to "manage page" it basically wants me to create a separate Google + Page for the Business. Is this the correct thing to do? Do I need to create a Google + Page for the company first, and then try to merge the Places listing with the new Google + Page for the business? Thank your for helping me clear this up!

Open Graph Tags Being Spidered By Google?
Do Facebook Open Graph tags get spidered by Google? I have a site I'm looking at and they've implemented these tags on the entire site, but with the same title and description on every page. I'm assuming if you use these tags, give each page their own unique tags. But do these have an effect on rankings at all? Does googlebot see them and take them into account?

Google+'s +1 for business....
I'm thinking (and I could be wrong) that eventually the number of people that have +1'd a site will begin to impact search results. After all, it is Google's platform. What are your thoughts on this? And do you know if having someone +1 your site is different than having them "follow" you or add you to their circles? Should a business have more followers or +1's?
