Does Hosting location impact on local search results?
-
Hi,
long time user first time questioner : )
I'm wondering if using a server overseas impacts on local search results?
I heard something to this effect and I thought I would come to the guys that know!
Thank for your help,
Ben.

Ha ha love it!
Your site's domain is currently associated with the target: Australia..
automatic for .com.au then?
Thanks Robert!
-
Go to GWMT and in home page select the site you want.
Select Configuration
Select Settings
To right you will see: Target users in......... Brisbane mate. (not really, but it would be funny)
Hope it helps,
-
For the life of me I can't find where to update those details in GWMT, can anybody please help me there?
-
Good advice, thank you!
-
I have a server with SSD drives myself...love it! But even if you cannot find such a configuration in your country you can consider using Amazon's AWS or a similar service for cloud hosting.
-
That's so helpful mate, thank you!
-
As to changing servers just for rankings, I would not personally unless it was an easy switch for you. Remember, with what I detailed, you should be fine to rank in Brisbane following those steps.
Best -
Thank you Ryan, that was very helpful.
I have always enjoyed good rankings doing the same simple, trusted stuff.. the allure of ssd drives sent me to the states but the site is not doings anything locally... Time to rethink me thinks!
-
I agree with everything Robert shared and would suggest you watch the following short videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXt23AXlJJU and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keIzr3eWK8I
Keep in mind those videos are from 2009. With that said, I would suggest the server's location is one of numerous signals Google uses to determine relevancy.
-
Thanks for the zippy answer Robert!
To refine my question, I'm in Brisbane Australia, and my server is in the states... does it matter?
Is it worth me getting a server locally with rankings as the ultimate motivation?
Thank you,
Ben.

Ian,
Assuming you are hosting in Europe on a generic TLD, and you want to rank in Houston for Auto Body Repair, you will need to go into GWMT and set your location. You will need to set language as en-us.
On your pages you will need to insure that you show a Houston address and make the content Houston relevant.
A suggestion is to include Google Map code showing location of Houston business.
Also, it is imperative for local ranking to have your Google + for business verified.
I hope this helps,
Robert

International SEO Two Subdomains Showing Up in Google Search Results
Hi I have a client that is having two subdomains showing up SERP when you Google their name. Here are the details. They have two subdomains us.companyname.com and en.companyname.com us.companyname.com is for the US and has completely different products and content than en.companyname.com en.companyname.com is the site designed for Europe and it is in English. How can I make it so that only the us. version shows up in the search results? Thanks in advance!

.fr Site Not Indexed in Search Console
Hey everyone, I am just now learning international SEO, and so appreciate any and all help! 1. I added supershuttle.fr to Search Console about a week ago and it still has 0 indexed pages. It is showing that pages were indexed in the sitemap, and when I check, there are 75 results in Google. Is this something I should be concerned with? Is there a setting that I'm not aware of in Search Console that I need to change? 2. Also, I read the below regarding the automatically translated pages. Would https://en.supershuttle.fr/ be considered an "automatically translated" page? Use robots.txt to block search engines from crawling automatically translated pages on your site. Automated translations don’t always make sense and could be viewed as spam. More importantly, a poor or artificial-sounding translation can harm your site’s perception

Lost local organic rankings and international issues
Hi Everyone, Hoping we can get some help from our fellow Mozzers (Mozee's? Mozites?) We have 3 TLD's .com.au .co.uk & .com We noticed an issue a couple of weeks ago where we suddenly lost a lot of our search rankings for keywords on the .com.au site that we'd been top with for a long time. A lot of our Australian visitors were coming through our US site. US & UK sites got increased ranking results. We fixed up what we thought were the issues (Potentially HREF Lang issues and old sitemap issues). Google Search Console is still telling us we have some HREF Lang Errors, (but this could be waiting an updated crawl as the number is decreasing) Our main domain example.com is now showing up as first result in google.com.au search and the example.com.au doesn't show up until page 4 (prior to 2 weeks ago it was number 1) Any input would be appreciated...

Search Console Hreflang-Tag Error "missing return tag": No explanation
Hey there, we have recently implemented hreflang on the sitemap level for our global website. The website has 57 sitemaps that are all referenced in a sitemap index file (www.buschvacuum.com/sitemap.xml). Google is showing several errors in search console ("Sitemap provided URLs and alternate URLs in 'en-AU' that do not have return tags."). However when I try to verify this I do find the return tags. Can this be caused by the fact that my hreflang tags span several sitemap files? To pick one random example (see screenshot for search console error message):
International SEO | | Online-Marketing-Guy
The Originating URL-hreflang-Tag is in www.buschvacuum.com/sitemap_3.xml, the return tag is in www.buschvacuum.com/sitemap_4.xml. It would be great if someone with experience regarding those errors could help me explaining that behavior. Thanks a lot. Jochen WXYQoUH.png0 -

Does the location of my Domain Registrar affect SEO?
Does the location of my Domain Registrar affect SEO? For example, if my hosting company is in the U.S., but the domain registrar is overseas. Also, is it better to have both services be met by one company?

Keyword Difficulty on Local Searches
I have got a site targeted for a New Zealand audience. The site is about property in Australia. The SERP for the keyword "real estate australia" is dominated by .com.au domains which are obviously set for Australia. Does google give .co.nz domains priority in the SERPs for New Zealand or are .com.au and .co.nz domains treated evenly for New Zealand based searches? http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=real+estate+australia&pws=0&gl=NZ Would a .co.nz domain have higher priority in this SERP?

How to overcome server and WHOIS location
What if we published an address in the UK as the contact/WHOIS details but wanted to target the USA market? The server resides in the UK, the domain WHOIS resides in the UK - but what are the best methods to target the US search market? The domain is a .com domain.
