Does a CMS inhibit a site's crawlability?

I smell baloney but I could use a little backup from the community!
My client was recently told by an SEO that search engines have a hard time getting to their site because using a CMS (like WordPress) doesn't allow "direct access to the html".
Here is what they emailed my client:
"Word Press (like your site is built with) and other similar “do it yourself” web builder programs and websites are not good for search engine optimization since they do not allow direct access to the HTML. Direct HTML access is needed to input important items to enhance your websites search engine visibility, performance and creditability in order to gain higher search engine rankings."
Bots are blind to CMSs and html is html, correct? What do you think about the information given by the other SEO?

Thank you, Keri! Everyone here is so helpful! This was my first Q&A and it certainly won't be my last.

I received an unsolicited email that told me things that were wrong on the SEO of my site, from a supposed SEO. They included:
7) Website is devoid of Meta keywords which are required for Page 1 rankings. We will add Meta keywords for your website.
Good for you to get a second opinion!

p.s. That video is gold! I sent it with my email response to the client for a third-party endorsement.

Thanks for you help! Funny enough, it turns out this SEO himself uses WordPress for his own blog, so it must not be that scary.
Anyway, I found this SEO's comments very misleading. To me, this was a reminder of the corny but true sentiment that with great power comes great responsibility. It is easy for SEOs to scare the bejeebus out of people who know very little about the web.

Thank you very much! I appreciate the support! This is a great answer and very balanced.
I think you are right that he sounds like a developer. If I give him a very generous read of what he is saying, perhaps he means that CMS get in the way of having full control over the code. As you point, out there are smart, easy ways around that.
Thank you very much! Very helpful!

WordPress is considered a solid platform for producing websites. Here is a link to a (long) video from Matt Cutts where he is a presenter at WordCamp. He praises WordPress for SEO and he uses the software himself on his site http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/. Just watch the first 4 minutes of the video and you will have an idea of his position on the software.
To offer a balanced viewpoint, your SEO sounds more like a web developer. There are some developers who don't use a CMS and prefer to code sites from the ground up. There are plenty of advantages to doing such. You have 100% control over every page of your site, you don't have any unnecessary code and you never are restricted from making changes.
The problem is time and cost. I have one client who spent $45k on a custom site which was poorly developed. We replaced the old website with a Joomla site (another popular CMS) for a cost of around $5k. The new site outperforms the old site in every category. The skill and experience of your developer is a huge factor.

Yes you are correct.
Tell your client to run far. That SEO has no clue, and is completely wrong. Maybe he's thinking that out of box Wordpress doesn't have Title or Meta Tag management ? That's solvable with Wordpress SEO. [highly recommended]
Wordpress outputs HTML.

Selling same products under separate brands and can't consolidate sites...duplicate content issues?
I have a client selling home goods online and in-store under two different brand names in separate regions of the country. Currently, the websites are completely identical aside from branding. It is unlikely that they would have the capacity to write unique titles and page content for each website (~25,000 pages each), and the business would never consolidate the sites. Would it make sense to use canonical tags pointing to the higher-performing website on category and product pages? This way we could continue to capture branded search to the lesser brand while consolidating authority on the better performing website. What would you do?

Soft 404's on a 301 Redirect...Why?
So we launched a site about a month ago. Our old site had an extensive library of health content that went away with the relaunch. We redirected this entire section of the site to the new education materials, but we've yet to see this reflected in the index or in GWT. In fact, we're getting close to 500 soft 404's in GWT. Our development team confirmed for me that the 301 redirect is configured correctly. Is it just a waiting game at this point or is there something I might be missing? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Question on Google's Site: Search
A client currently has two domains with the same content on each. When I pull up a Cached version of the site, I noticed that it has a Cache of the correct page on it. However, when I do a site: in Google, I am seeing the domain that we don't want Google indexing. Is this a problem? There is no canonical tag and I'm not sure how Google knows to cache the correct website but it does. I'm assuming they have this set in webmaster tools? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

How is this possible? A 200 response and 'nothing' to be seen? Need help!
On checking this website http://dogtraining.org.uk/ I get a 200 response. But an Oops! Google Chrome could not find dogtraining.org.uk . Same with Firefox (Server not found). Obviously there is a problem - I just don't know where to 'start' investigating to spot the error. Can someone help me? Thank you!

Wordpress New Category URL's
Were just about to redesign our site and put all the blogs over to the new site. Previously most blogs have been added to the uncategorised section of the blog and I'm now weighing up the benefit of sifting through all the blogs and changing them to relevant categories. From an SEO perspective would it be better to Leave them in their current category but start afresh with all new blogs by adding them to relevant categories? Work out which blogs should go in which new category and 301 all previous URL's to the new one. Obviously number one will take a lot more time than number two.

Website's stability and it's affect on SEO
What is the best way to combat previous website stability issues? We had page load time and site stability problems over the course of several months. As a result our keyword rankings plummeted. Now that the issues have been resolved, what's the best/quickest way to regain our rankings on specific keywords? Thanks, Eric

404's and duplicate content.
I have real estate based websites that add new pages when new listings are added to the market and then deletes pages when the property is sold. My concern is that there are a significant amount of 404's created and the listing pages that are added are going to be the same as others in my market who use the same IDX provider. I can go with a different IDX provider that uses IFrame which doesn't create new pages but I used a IFrame before and my time on site was 3min w/ 2.5 pgs per visit and now it's 7.5 pg/visit with 6+min on the site. The new pages create new content daily so is fresh content and better on site metrics (with the 404's) better or less 404's, no dup content and shorter onsite metrics better? Any thoughts on this issue? Any advice would be appreciated
