Merchant´s data feed for affiliates is the same content as their own website...
-
Hi
Some advice appreciated. Started working on a site and found out that they are giving their unique content to their affiliates (an XML feed so appearing on another domain).
In this case, if they want to provide the data like that, how can we protect ourselves?
Should we use author tags in our html, is that necessary?
Is there any fix other than "stop doing that and give them different content"?
Thanks

"Your site wont get any penalties as long as your site was indexed first."
Who is indexed first does not matter. What matters is who has authority. Authority often wins even if last published.

Lots of affiliates are really really smart people. If you require them to use rel=canonical they will know what you are doing and what the result will be. So, if you have great affiliates don't do this to them unless you want to risk losing them.
I am an affiliate and if the program manager told me to rel=canonical my pages to his I would reply.... "you point your pages to MY site or I am leaving".
I would not be linking to them either because their product might go through a shopping cart on my domain.
If I ran an affiliate program and had very valuable and smart affiliates I would produce new content for my own site that takes me out of competition with the affiliates and let them know that they are free to use the data feed or create their own unique descriptions. But that descriptions on my site are off limits.
You don't want your superaffiliates jumping to the competition or becoming your competition. They are not married to you and even if they are they will file for divorce.

So that´s 100% the case, if we were indexed first and our content is indexed no need to worry?

I am not sure whether that's a good solution or not, but look into the option of providing no product description in your feed. Just the Product Name, Categories, Tags/Attributes etc. Maybe a shorter version of the description...First 100 characters maybe ? That would at-least protect from future datafeed consumers....

It would be great if their was a plugin or Feed setting that automatically added the canonical tag for you, but im not sure about that.
If they are scraping the content via feeds, then you could include a link to the same page in the content.
Create a link in the content linking to the page URL so that when people scrape the content, the link will still be on other websites, linking to the original source. (do this creatively, perhaps hyperlink the page title in the article)
Your site wont get any penalties as long as your site was indexed first.

Hi
The websites on which our content will be appearing also pull XML info from many websites so we can´t control them as tightly as ourselves.
Is there anything we can do on our own pages to ensure we get authorship (I though Author tags, no), so we allow them to have the content but google always understands our´s is the original?
Both your solutions mean action on another company´s site.

Hi
You have 2 options.
1.) Add a rel=canonical tag on their page with the URL to the original content on your website.
2.) Link to the original content via a URL or text link on their pages
From Matt Cutts:
_We've had a lot of interest in these meta tags, particularly in how the syndication-source tag relates to rel=canonical. After evaluating this feedback, we’ve updated our system to use rel=canonical instead of syndication-source, if both are specified. _
If you know the full URL, rel=canonical is preferred, and you need not specify syndication-source.
If you know a partial URL, or just the domain name, continue using syndication-source.
We've also had people ask "why metatag instead of linktag"? We actually support both forms for the tag, and you can use either. However, we believe the linktag form is more in line with the spirit of the standard, and encourage new users to implement the linktag form rather than the metatag form we originally proposed.

URL with affiliate ID won't stop outranking our homepage. Time for nuclear option?
We have affiliate links applied to our index URL - https://playon.co - which are not picked up as a duplicate URLs by Google. We've applied a canonical URL, but our homepage is a 301 redirect to a page with a language parameter. So what happens is: https://playon.co/ goes to https://playon.co/en Affiliate links such as https://playon.co/#/?affiliate_token=1390448caccb7d go to https://playon.co/en#/?affiliate_token=1390448caccb7d This gets picked up as rel="canonical" href="https://playon.co/en" which I assumed marked it as a non-canonical page. Nonetheless, we keep seeing this affiliate "page" ranking - even above our own homepage for some terms. Worse, the affiliate URL also contains old cached information of the page. I don't even see how these SERP results should exist, because the affiliate link just ends up at the homepage (https://playon.co/en) My questions: What can we do to remove these affiliate URL versions of our homepage from being ranked? Google doesn't see anything after the hash in the indexed affiliate URLs. If we were to no-index our index URL (https://playon.co/) to completely remove the affiliates links, would our canonical version (https://playon.co/en) assume the top listing, or will we have effectively nuked our entire site? Appreciate any help.

Will GA Autotrack affect affiliate sites not using autotrack?
I want to add autotrack.js to affiliate quote forms hosted on my site. However, I do not know how it will affect affiliate websites (not associated with my quote forms, but with the same Google Analytics code, that do not use autotrack. I read that "Autotrack is not an official Google Analytics product and does not qualify for GA Premium". Will it harm my affiliates in any way to have autotrack on their quote form but not on their websites? It will have their GA website tracking number.

Advise about Social Sharing between two loosely affiliated website - (retweets/fb cross sharing)
So basically, I have two websites. One being my Primary website and another which is very Niche/Seasonal. Now the Niche website received a penalty, and was later re-included however google traffic has been extremely limited since being reindexed. (bing never had a problem, still top ranked) I don't directly link back and forth between the two websites because its not worth hurting my primary websites ranking. I'm sure google knows I own both anyway, as they are on the same webmaster tools but the Niche site was kicked for spammy link building & its been an endless process removing them all. Anyway, with that being my concern. Would it be acceptable to cross share facebook posts, retweet and do things like that on occasion? My primary reason for asking is because the Niche website has a very large social following, so I would like to share post/tweets from my Primary site when its relevant and vice versa. Appreciate any suggestions/comments. Thanks!

Best way to start affiliate marketing a new mens magazine website?
I have just started up a new mens magazine website featuring articles, videos, sports news and photos to help drive traffic to the website. I write all the articles myself and do the social media updates in my spare time. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on the best way to start doing affiliate marketing for a new website? I was inspired to do this by successful internet marketers who make a passive income off their websites. So far I have added Amazon and William Hill as affiliate links as I think my target market will be looking for these types of product links. Also, for anyone who has experience in this, how long it taken for your blog to become successful and make money? Many thanks, Alex

How do the engines look at pages populated using content from an affiliate site?
We are building out a section of our site using an affiliate partnership in the travel space. How would you suggest organizing the content so we do not get penalized for duplicate content? Do you suggest not suing the content at all?

Hi, I'm building our own affilaite system. I want to make sure I get as much SEO benifit from affiliate links as possible so I am in search of the perfect solution. My thoughts after doing a bit of research are to do the following - using the # as my identifier: 1/. Use an ID like www.mysite.com/#A123 2/. Redirect via 301 these urls to www.mysite.com Any thoughts on this, or other things I should be thinking of with regard so building an affilaite system that has strong SEO benifits? Thanks
