Https & www
-
Hi,
I've looked all over for this, maybe I am searching for the wrong thing but here is my question.
My site is https://mysite.com yet I want it to display as www.mysite.com in the SERP. Is this possible? I realise people like secure but I would rather display it as www because I believe people are going to skip over a result (sometimes) if it they are not sure what the https is.
My SSL certificate is for mysite.com, would my issue be resolved if I bought it for www.mysite.com instead?
Thanks in advance!

If your site resolves to https, then it's likely Google will display it that way. I haven't seen any click-through studies of https vs non, so it's hard to say how having the https will effect you. That said, I have seen correlation studies that say shorter domain names are better correlated with higher rankings, so you may be onto something.
If I want to get rid of https from showing will that mean I have to take the certificate from the homepage and just have it on the relevant pages of my website?
Yes, if you remove the https from the homepage then Google won't display it.
Fairly certain rel=canonical is not what you're looking for here, as even if you point it to http I suspect Google will likely ignore it.
Hope this helps!

Hi, Shaun,
rel=canonical is used when you have multiple pages with same product pages so you can set it for avoiding error of duplicate title and content, but if you do 301 redirect in.htaccess then your site is open with the URL which you want, and Google webmaster preferred setting is used for showing domain in SERP with or without WWW.

Marcus,
Ok, I think my confusion started when google displayed google as www but then it redirected to https. I've recently found out this happens when your logged in to google so that explains that.
One last question, if I change my certificate to WWW will my SERP show this or will it still say https://www.mysite.com. If I want to get rid of https from showing will that mean I have to take the certificate from the homepage and just have it on the relevant pages of my website?
-
Hey Shaun, you can't do that.
www.mysite.com is potentially different to mysite.com (whatever the protocol).
If you want the results to show the www. version this has to be the main version of the site so Sanket's answer is perfectly right.
- make the site resolve on www.
- do whatever you need to do with your cert
- set the preferred domain in webmaster tools.
OR
Make do with the non www domain.
Cheers
Marcus

Hi Sanket,
Thanks for your reply. If I change my webmaster tools settings to a preferred domain of www, this is like a rel=canonical?
I don't think I quite got the answer I'm looking for.
Basically I want to display mysite which is https://mysite.com as www.mysite.com in the SERP. I need to keep the site as https://mysite.com though as the certificate I have is for that and not WWW
-
Hi,
You should display mysite.com instead of www.mysite.com. It is possible to display your site in SERP with WWW Go in webmaster select preferred domain which you want to display. But make sure you have to set .htaccess file in you FTP and set domain which you want to open when people search your site.

Blog Post SEO - Bounce Rate & Layout
Mozzers, I wrote the following blog post about Microsoft’s current offer to receive $100 free in bing ads. http://www.cildermansolutions.com/blog/free-bing-ads-coupon-for-2017-get-100-in-free-advertising-credits I noticed that the bounce rate on the post is higher than i was expecting; I am wondering if this is because I put the eligibility rules for collecting the ads coupon in the 2nd paragraph...and people are just seeing that right away and bouncing. I obviously don’t want to lie or trick readers, but i am wondering if the community has any idea/suggestions. Thanks, Matt

Within the Q&A forum, is it spam to include a website in our signature?
Hello Mozzers! I've seen several contributors that end their questions and responses with a website. Just for the sake of the argument, this is an example: -- Some text about the response/question --- Hope I've helped. Gaston Riera www.domain-Gaston-company.com To clarify more, the URL does never have a link. I've always considered that this is a place to share and help other by ours/others expertise not to self promote implicitly our company.

So, my question is related to the rules and best practices in the forum: Is it spam to include a website in the signature of a message? Does Moz's community staff take some action about those? Thanks!

Using https: Beyond the standard seo metrics
Hi All, I've been doing quite a bit of browsing around the topic of utilising https vs http when constructing urls and I wanted to know if anybody has research on the customer perception of a site where all urls are https. We originally used rel canonical tags to inform the browsers that the http and https were the same but we are considering stepping this up to having the http pages redirect to the https and I'm wondering how customers may react if they know that all pages are https. Anybody have insights on possible outcomes? Thanks, Tom

Homepage & Subdomain Love Story...
Hi, Here's the situation: There's this website URL.com which is a search engine for a certain purpose (android developers). In fact, the homepage and maybe the "about" page are the only pages sitting on URL.com, all of the other inner pages (hundreds of thousands) are generated within one main Sub-Domain - X.URL.com Also, the analytics is tracking only X.URL.com because those inner pages are the only ones to attract organic traffic. So, in Analytics we see URL.com as referral traffic to X.URL.com Also, in WebmasterTools under "Links to your site" we see like half a million links from URL.com to X.URL.com Is this situation normal, do you think it may impact SEO in any way? Last remark, organic traffic is growing in a great way to the inner pages generated by the search engine, which as said sitting under x.URL.com Thanks

Are there better & inexpensive third party website analytics software over Google Analytics?
I've heard there are some third-party software that provide greater depth of information than Google Analytics, such as mouse tracking, heat mapping, video snapshots ect. Can anyone recommend a good program to use? I've tried a basic web-search but there seems to be a great variety of different ones.

Why would my Bounce Rate drop from 40% to 2% over 3 days without making any major changes to my site www.hiltonhead.com?
Our Wordpress site has had an historical bounce rate of 40% for the last 3 years but last Thursday it dropped to 17%, Friday to 7% and now is running at 2%. The pageviews per visit have also increased from 3 to almost 6. Thanks

Http v https
We have an ecommerce site retailing relatively high value products - precious metals - We have a VeriSign SSL certificate for the domain... Weighing up the advantages of pointing all visitors through https on the domain, there is a benefit of customer confidence, but from a search engine - say Google's point of view, will delivering the site over https have any trust factor or benefits?
