Questions about root domain setup
-
Hi There,
I'm a recent addition to SEOmoz and over the past few weeks I've been trying to figure things out. This whole SEO process has been a bit of a brain burner but its slowly becoming a little more clearer.
For awhile I noticed that I was unable to get Open Site Explorer to display information about my site. It mentioned that that there was not enough data for the URL. Too recent of a site, no links, etc. Eventually I changed the the URL to include "www." and it pulled up results.
I also noticed that a few of my page warnings are because of duplicate page content. One page will be listed as http://enbphotos.com. The other will be listed as http://www.enbphotos.com.
I guess I'm not sure what this all means and how to change it. I'm also not really sure what the terminology even is and something regarding root domain seemed appropriate but I'm not sure if it is accurate.
Any help/suggestions/links would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Chris

My mistake - I thought that was the code that enbphotos wanted to add to the .htaccess, however if that is the code it is pretty obvious that the rewrite engine is engaged Alan haha cheers. My apologies for misreading the response.
Other than that I agree with what Alan says...
-
The engine is already invoked, with that code.
Add a few blank lines between RewriteEngine on and the other lines
Keep those other lines together. (I don't think they work)
And put the new code one blank line after invoking the engine.
keep a blank line after the new code.
-- Those other lines say this:
IF a request comes for proofs.enbphotos.com
OR a request for www.proofs.enbphotos.com
THEN redirect it to http://accounts.exposuremanager.com
- but it doesn't work, so either there is a problem (your apache doesn't redirect or some config has turned it off - or it could be that the proofs subdomain has a different document root.

what is the small bit or rewrite code that is already in there? Does it already engage the RewriteEngine? If so you don't need that line twice but you can just add your other code below the existing and it should work.
A lot of hosting environments that are on shared servers for instance allow you to put redirects etc in place through interfaces and then create the .htaccess for you...

Hi Alan, Thanks again for your response. I just wanted to follow up with you and see if you had any pointers for my below response? It turns out I have a .htaccess already in play. It's for a CNAME/subdomain setup. Do you know if I can just add the bit of code that you linked me too directly below what is already in my htaccess?
-
Thanks very much for your responses! I looked at those threads and I was about to add that bit of redirect code when I noticed I already have an .htaccess uploaded to my server. It has a small bit of code redirecting a subdomain/cname thing.
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^proofs.enbphotos.com$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.proofs.enbphotos.com$
RewriteRule ^.*$ "http://accounts.exposuremanager.com" [R=301,L]Can I just add the other bit of redirect below this?
Thanks again for your help!

This is a common issue with sites in relation to duplicate content - I would look at setting up a 301 (permanent) redirect from none www version of your page to the www version.
Have a look at the SeoMoz guide to redirection here - http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirection
Hope this helps

Hello Chris.
I see you have an apache server.
You should be able to add a few lines of redirect code in your .htaccess file in the document root directory.
Here is a response from Ryan Schwab that answers your need to redirect:
http://www.seomoz.org/q/is-there-an-easier-way-from-the-server-to-prevent-duplicate-page-content
Unfortunately, some people have linked to you with www and some without it.
You may suffer a little for a while, but you could come out of it even better than you were before.

Redirect Chain Domain
MozPro is highlighting some redirect chain issues with our domain that I do not recall ever setting up in our redirect list. In our Moz Pro Campaign I see the Site Crawl has flagged 36 Redirect Chain Issues. I understand how the redirect chain errors can happen but I do not recall ever manually redirecting our domain, yet I have http://stickylife.com, https://stickylife.com & https://www.stickylife.com all associated in one of our redirect chain errors. When looking at our redirect files I do not see any of these domain redirects and wonder how this has happened and how to fix it. It appears as though our HTTP and HTTPS is causing some redirection. I wonder if this is coming from our DNS settings?

301 Redirect for 3 Domains into 1 New Domain
So I wanted a quick sanity check on the htaccess syntax for migrating 3 domains into 1 new domain. For example, we're migrating 3 sites abc.com, def.com and ghi.com, all into 1 new site on ghi.com. Here's the htaccess we're placing on the root of ghi.com: redirect 301 http://www.abc.com/wines.html http://www.ghi.com/wines redirect 301 http://www.def.com/trade.html http://www.ghi.com/trade

redirect 301 http://www.ghi.com/winery-tours.html http://www.ghi.com/visit/taste On the DNS side of things, we're parking abc.com and def.com on the ghi.com server. I'm not seeing examples of htaccess files for this scenario, and none that use any domain info on the "from" side of the redirect 301 syntax. Any suggestions before we pull the trigger? Thanks!0 -
Domains and subdomains
When I started a campaign for my message, I got the message: "We have detected that the domain www.vamospaella.com and the domain vamospaella.com both respond to web requests and do not redirect. Having two "twin" domains that both resolve forces them to battle for SERP positions, making your SEO efforts less effective. We suggest redirecting one, then entering the other here." I wasn't sure whether I had said it was a subdomain when in fact it was a domain (or the other way round), so I started another campaign for the same website using the other option and the message didn't come up. However, I still don't understand what you meant by this and whether it's an issue. When I search for my website in Google, it shows as vamospaella.com when other websites come up as www. and then their domain name. If it is a problem, is it to do with my hosting package and how it's set up or is it to do with my local site on my computer? I did ring my web host, 1&1, but they said they couldn't see a problem. Please can you let me know how I can resolve this as my ranking is still quite low in Google and I'm not sure why. If it is because of "twin domains", then will Google see my content as duplicated and keep me low in their rankings? I'm new to SEO and not a website novice, so please answer in lay terms! Thanks Melissa

Frustrating Local Seo Question
I have just lost the top stop on Google Places (Pack 7) for one of my clients. The company that took it came out of nowhere to take the top stop. Now I don't mind getting out ranked when someone has worked hard to out rank me but what is frustrating is this site scores terrible across the board on just about every score that is supposed to determine on and off page ranking factors. The only place it outscores is in the link department but the site is so new there is no data available in OSE. The site has 0's and 1's for PA, MR and MT plus the keyword (kitchen remodeling) that it is taking the top spot for scores and F in the SEOMoz on page report card while the page that I optimized for this very same keyword scores an A. Plus this site has zero citations according to Bright Local Data. What Gives? Here is a little bit of data: Keyword: Kitchen Remodeling My Clients website is http://www.tandmkitchens.com Competitors website: http://www.njkitchendesigns.com I'm kicking his butt in every category except Domain Age and inbound link total, his inbound link total is 409 but it's only from 2 domains.

Any thoughts on how this is possible would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all and Merry Christmas!

Moving domain.com to subdomain.domain.com
Hi, I like to do something, but first like to take some opinions from seomoz. My question is: 1. I have a domain: brandtrends.com and i like to move this from brandtrends.com to trends.brand.com because: brandtrends.com is on the position #15 on the second page of SERP for my "brand" keyword. I like to move it under trends.brand.com but all inbound-links are @brandtrends.com What do you thing, if i move permanently 301 from brandtrends.com to trends.brand.com does it rank under brand.com on the 1st page of SERP..? like to rank trends.brand.com under brand.com on results page...!!! I have the backlinks of brandtrends.com on my hands too, should i leave the inbound links @brandtrends.com and the new ones i build with trends.brand.com or should i change the inbound links from brandtrends.com to trends.brand.com Hope you got it! THanks
