How to set Home page for the best effect
-
My head is spinning with all the confusing possibilities.
Does anybody have an easy answer for setting up the home page and its canonical-ishness
ie Which gives the best SEO Mojo ?
\
\default.aspx
\keyword\
\keyword\default.aspx
Thanking you in advance for reducing the number of business migranes around the globe.

My suggestion is not different from others so i think i will also advice and recommends you to use ‘/’instead of default.aspx and more...
I know you want to get better results and traffic from search engine but to be very honest...with ASP websites it’s a real pain (if you are using ASP platform...) I think following things should be considered as more important than adding keywords in the URL...
- There should be a proper navigational structure and pages should be 301 redirected instead of 302 (if any)
- Use single version of URL
- Add kick ass content
- Get quality links to it
- Keep a check of functionality and load time of the website so that things can stay under control
And more...
I think adding too many keywords that does not add value to user will hurt from search engine point of view as search engines are trying hard to come as nearer as possible to how human brain thinks...

Ok then.. got that.. don't use default.aspx or the wrong backslash.
But out of the remainder .. any idea what I should craft using SEO magic so as to get the highets results in the SERPS ?
or

default.aspx is not a good thing to do.
You should redirect those so it becomes /
(except you say it is a subdirectory already, so redirect to that)
Also, you should NEVER refer to default.aspx in any of your links.
(and remember NEVER to use a backslash otherwise you will be sending broken links)
-
Well actually I was thinking more on the Google SERP mojo..
It actually redirects into a subdirectory.. always has and I cannot change it at this point so.. sorry.. moot point.

Personally, I vote for / - (I think you meant a forward slash, no?) - When I visit a Web site home page, from a user perspective, I have an expectation that I will see this as the URL: http://www.HomePage.com or, http://HomePage.com - If I see anything else, it makes me wonder..."Am I in the right place? Do I really want to be here?" That's not the kind of wondering you want your visitors to have.
Even if another choice was better for SEO, that question mark over your user's head that appears when they see something like http://www.HomePage/BigLongKeyword, could be enough to make them bounce right back to Google. At that point all that SEO becomes useless.

Blog article cannibalizes our home page
Hello there, We're having a rather big SEO issue that I’m hoping someone here can help us with, perhaps having experienced the same thing or simply understanding what's going on. Since around June, our website's home page has lost the majority of its most important rankings. Not just dropping, but losing them entirely and all at once. We think it was self-inflicted: Almost at the same time, a blog article of ours (which we had recently updated) started ranking for almost all the same keywords. While our home page is a commercial page highlighting only our own product, the article that usurped the position is a comparison article, comparing our own solution to competitors. The reason we created that article is because we noticed a trend of Google increasingly favoring such comparison articles over dedicated product pages. But of course we didn’t plan to cannibalize our own home page with it. My question is whether anyone has experience with such a case? Is there a way to "tell"/influence Google to rank our home page again, instead of ranking that article? Thanks a lot, Pascal

Should I deindex my pages?
I recently changed the URLs on a website to make them tidier and easier to follow. I put 301s in place to direct all the previous page names to the new ones. However, I didn't read moz's guide which says I should leave the old sitemap online for a few weeks afterwards. As I result, webmaster tools is showing duplicate page titles (which means duplicate pages) for the old versions of the pages I have renamed. Since the old versions are no longer on the sitemap, google can no longer access them to find the 301s I have put in place. Is this a problem that will fix itself over time or is there a way to quicken up the process? I could use webmaster tools to remove these old urls, but I'm not sure if this is recommended. Alternatively, I could try and recreate the old sitemap, but this would take a lot of time.

When doing internal linking back to your home/index file what is the best coding course of action?
When doing internal linking back to your home/index page is it best to set the code as linked to "www.thedomain.com" or "www.thedomain.com/" or just "/" - I'm attempting some canonicalization and our programmer is concerned about linking to just the URL as he's saying it's going to be viewed as an external source. We have www redirects in place that come back to just www.thedomain.com and a redirect to send the www.thedomain.com/index.php back to just www.thedomain.com . Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

What can be the cause of my inner pages ranking higher than my home page?
If you do a search for my own company name or products we sell the inner pages rank higher than the homepage and if you do a search for exact content from my home page my home page doesn't show in the results. My homepage shows when you do a site: search so not sure what is causing this.

Duplicate Page Content Lists the same page twice?
When checking my crawl diagnostics this morning I see that I have the error Duplicate page content. It lists the exact same url twice though and I don't understand how to fix this. It's also listed under duplicate page title. Personal Assistant | Virtual Assistant | Charlotte, NC http://charlottepersonalassistant.com/110 Personal Assistant | Virtual Assistant | Charlotte, NC http://charlottepersonalassistant.com/110 Does this have anything to do with a 301 redirect here? Why does it have http;// twice? Thanks all! | http://www.charlottepersonalassistant.com/ | http://http://charlottepersonalassistant.com/ |

What is the best way to deal with pages whose content changes?
My site features businesses that offers activities for kids. Each business has its own page on my site. Business pages contains a listing of different activities that organization is putting on (such as events, summer camps, drop-in activities). Some businesses only offer seasonal activities (for example, during Christmas break and summer camps). The rest of the year, the business has no activities -- the page is empty. This is creating 2 problems. It's poor user experience (which I can fix no problem) but it also is thin content and sometimes treated as duplicate content. What's the best way to deal with pages whose content can be quite extensive at certain points of the year and shallow or empty at other parts? Should I include a meta ROBOTS tag to not index when there is no content, and change the tag to index when there is content? Should I just ignore this problem? Should I remove the page completely and do a redirect? Would love to know people's thoughts.
