Crawl Diagnostics - unexpected results
-
I received my first Crawl Diagnostics report last night on my dynamic ecommerce site.
It showed errors on generated URLs which simply are not produced anywhere when running on my live site. Only when running on my local development server.
It appears that the Crawler doesn't think that it's running on the live site.
For example
http://www.nordichouse.co.uk/candlestick-centrepiece-p-1140.html
will go to a Product Not Found page, and therefore Duplicate Content errors are produced.
Running
http://www.nhlocal.co.uk/candlestick-centrepiece-p-1140.html
produces the correct product page and not a Product Not Found page
Any thoughts?

Hi Nordichouse,
Sorry it took awhile for me to get back to you on this.
I agree with the SEOmoz techs, it doesn't matter if it is a crawler or a actual person, if you go to an invalid url you should be redirected as 301 to the actual page. If the product doesn't exist it should not allow for superfluous urls.
So basically what you should have is if the product exist then the site redirects to the correct URL. If it doesn't exist then send any query for that product to the same page and display the oscommerce product not found message. By doing this you prevent the system from creating upteenthousand urls for each product.
If you want to test what I mean you can visit our store a www.rubberstore.com/catalog and try a few urls like:
catalog/nipple-clips-p-1000.html
we don't have a product with the id of 1000 so you'll get redirected to the not found message and the root page
-p-1000.htmlhowever if you try:
catalog/a-fake-url-p-29.html
you'll get redirected to our actual product page matching this product id.Hope that makes since. All this is done with the .htaccess url re-writter I posted above.

Don
Yes, that is how it is done and there is no problem with that. The above is just how inbound URLs get processed.
The issue here is how the crawler works. The only possible way for this particular URL to be generated is for a certain parameter to be appended to the URL - and that would be unusual (unless SEOmoz techies tell me different)

Did you ever have a product with the id of 1140? If you look at your products table just check the auto number in the product_id column..
If you did and it was live at some point it could be finding the old product based on the old url it used to have.
If you never made that product live then I don't know how a crawler could of found a product that doesn't exist unless they starting using some technology that I'm unaware of.
Since you said you use OSC this what we use to deal with the problem I outlined above..

Thanks, Don
You are right in your analysis - it is osC, but highly modified by myself. Yes, it does redirect.
That, however, is not the point. On the live site, the URL containing 1140 (for example) is never generated.
The mystery is how the Crawler can find something that isn't there! Magic.

Hi nordichouse,
You may want to check with your CMS provider. The urls are similar to Oscommerce which I'm experienced with, but I can see that isn't an Oscommerce setup. The system should have some sort of URL re-writer to deal with this problem.
The issue that I see is the system actually doesn't care what you type in between .co.uk/ and -p-1140.html
For example try this url to get a valid product..
http://www.nordichouse.co.uk/nipple-clips-p-1000.html
which is the same as
http://www.nordichouse.co.uk/-p-1000.html
But should 301 redirect to: http://www.nordichouse.co.uk/linen-style-collection-p-1000.htmlOscommerce has a URL 301 re-writer that prevents the system for using incorrect URL's I would hope your system does as well.
I'm not trying to avoid helping you, but the without an exact knowledge of how the system handles URL's it generates it is hard to troubleshoot, however since it is a CMS somebody who works on it should already have this knowledge.
My best,
Don

SEO for e-commerce, linking, brand mentions, insights diagnostics
Hi, I run the seo for www.bilthamber.com It is an e-commerce site selling car care products, and we also manufacture our own products. I was wondering how the seo for an e-commerce site might compare to the seo for a blog or information based site, or other types of site. And also how the seo for a particular product page on my site might compare to a information based page on my site. Are the tactics the same? Should you try and rank for similar terms, the same generic terms, or complelty unique terms for the best seo? Or should every page try and rank for different terms, to ensure that the engines dont rank 2 or more different pages for the same search term? And how many keywords or search terms should I try and rank a particular product page for? Or an information page, or blog page? Is there a minimum or maximum that is recommomended? Does the more terms you try and rank for on a page take the weight out of each of them? So having 4 really good search terms might be better than having 10 ok generic ones? How do I find out what are my best, most highly converting, most profitable keywords overtime for Google? I can find some information like this, but it is showing the stats for Bing UK, not Google, even though Google UK is my main engine in Moz. My domain authority has decreased by 3 this week, this is the first time it has gone down since I started with Moz a few months back, can anyone explain why? And how this will affect the rankings ect, and how I can get it back up higher agian? And for linking and brand mentions, what are the goals of this feature? Should I find my mentions and ask them to talk about us more and link to us properly? I'm not sure if this is right. Should I be asking other websites to make links to our pages, or should it be organic? And for the insights section, I am recieveing tons of issues a lot to do with duplicate content, will having the rel=carnocial tag fix these issues? I know thats a lot for 1 question, but its been building up in my head! Thanks in advance! Max

Open Site Explorer produces better results for www.50campfires.com than 50campfires.com
Our website url is 50campfires.com and www.50campfires.com redirects to 50campfires.com Look at the Open Site Explorer results for the two and www.50campfires.com has better results. Does google have an issue with this or may it be confusing them? We have redirects in place. How would I go about fixing this? More on what strategies would improve Page Authority and Page Rank. No Crawl data in dashboard
For the second straight week, I have had no crawl data in my dashboard. It seems like the crawler erased all my results in the pro dashboard. Is there a way to manually recrawl my site, since I will have to wait another week to see if it comes back to earth? Thanks

Crawl started on the 18th of December and still hasn't completed!
As the title states I started a crawl over 2 weeks ago now and it still hasn't completed. Does anyone know why this could be? Thanks

Not all pages are being crawled
I am set up on the PRO plan, I was under the impression that it would crawl up to 10,000 pages. My site has just over 200 pages, but whenever I am crawled it only crawls 121 pages. Is this normal? It's hard to know how reliable my data is because a significant amount of pages are missing.

Www.mydomain.tld same as mydomain.tld - unexpected results
Hi I set up a campaign to monitor a website and chose to track the root domain, however the report showed every single page on my website was duplicated with itself when seen as www.mydomain.tld as opposed to just mydomain.tld. I deleted the campaign and set it up to monitor only the www.mydomain.tld as I don't use any other subdomains, however in Bing results the website is listed without the www and so is not recognised in the ranking checker. How can I set it up so that seomoz recognises the pages as the same either with or without the www?
