Why don't some external links "count"?
-
A car-dealer client advertises through DexKnows, and the entry includes a link to the client's website. That link is not listed as a linking domain through OpenSite Explorer for the client's site. A competing car dealer also advertises through DexKnows, but that link is counted as a linking domain for the competitor. Why the difference? (I'm new and still learning -- linkbuilding appears to be my weakness.) Thank you!

Thank you thank you thank you! I think something SEOmoz has does that, too, but in my brain-overloaded state, it didn't occur to me how to use it. I feel so enlightened -- you have made my day!

Good question!
I use a browser extension in Firefox called SEO for Firefox. It's free and one of the many things it will do is highlight "followed" and "no followed" links in different colors so you can quickly see which is which. I highly recommend it. It also will catch broken links. It's very handy!
-
That helps a lot! Thank you! Do you mind me asking, how did you know that Dex links are "no follow"? Or is that one of your trade secrets?
-
Hi again. I did a little further investigating. It appears that nearly all links that go out to business Websites from DexKnows are "no follow." This means you aren't going to benefit from them as inbound links. However, I discovered that the links to a company's Website inside the company's Mobile site profile are followed. It appears your client's competitor has figured out where the followed links are. There may be other places, but there is definitely that one.
Does you client have a mobile site and have they completed their Mobile site profile in DexKnows? If not, I'd recommend it so they can get that inbound link.
-
Thanks for the answer! I did check it, and the link from Dex goes right where it's supposed to.

Hi The Optimizer, Have you checked your link at DexKnows to make sure they set it up right? The reason I asked is that you made me curious. So, I went to DexKnows for Tacoma, WA, clicked on the "Auto Dealers" link (http://www.dexknows.com/local/automotive/vehicle_sales/auto_dealers/geo/c-tacoma-wa/) and was taken to a page listing a bunch of dealerships. I clicked the "Website" icon for the very first dealer on the list (Austin's Pro-Max Automotive Repiar Centers)and I received a 404 error. Either their link wasn't set up right, or they don't have a Website.) If your situation is similar, this would explain why your link isn't showing up in your reports.
I hope this helps!

My site is linked from over 900 "The Globe"-domains - disavow or not?
Hi! As some of you may be familiar with, there is a giant spam-network with the same design and same page title on all domains: "The Globe - The world's most visited web pages". For example: theglobe.at

www.internet-search.us I've now discovered that over 900 of these spam-domains link to my site. My plan was of course to disavow them all, but Google is explicit on telling me to be careful. «Only disavow if you are certain that the links are damaging to your rankings». And to be honest, I'm not sure. Also: it seems drastic to disavow almost a thousand pages. I'm afraid to mess something up. What would you do?3 -
Are links from charities really better than 'normal' links.
Hi Guys. Just wondering about this idea that links from Charities are particularly good. I've heard people say that links from .org sites are particularly strong. But anyone can get a .org domain, it's just that charities tend to use them more often. Right? I just don't get the logic. Can anyone give more detail about this? Is it a myth? Is there quality info on this topic I can check out? We're working with several charities at the moment, and they all seem happy to blog and link to us...so I just wanted to know a little more. Isaac.

Asking a site to remove a "nofollow" on a link to our client
Hello, We created a good infographic for a client of ours and a large tech site (DA 86) picked up and ran a story on it. We didn't contact this company asking them to feature it, they have just picked it up through other shares around the Web. I understand that, at the end of the day, it's their prerogative whether to "nofollow" their links or not, but surely they should be giving our client some credit as they have clearly deemed the graphic newsworthy and felt that it would appeal to their readership. I've emailed said tech site, but to no avail. Does anyone have any advice on this? Or is it just a case of they can do what the heck they want? I know that our client will still benefit from the additional referral traffic, but a follow link would have been nicer! Cheers, Lewis

Feeling "vision limited" in the linkbuilding process
Hi there! My client has a web about kitesurfing (he offers a bilingual kitesurf camp) and after thinking about linkbuilding actions I've come into conclusion that the only effective way of generating backlinks is make the sharing NATURAL via high quality CONTENT creation and distributing it through different digital channels as some of you told me before. The problem is that the website is much 1.0 (static) rather than 2.0 (there's no blog and there's neither time nor resources to mantain it). Therefore I feel I bit limited in the process. Does anyone share my statament? Any advice? Thanks in advance

How might Google differentiate between an artificial link exchange and partners linking to each other?
Hi, All! Artificial link exchanges (contacting a vaguely connected site and requesting to exchange links to increase your PR) is, as far as I know, considered an outdated, not-so-smart technique, as Google might devalue them. Yet, for real business partners to exchange links seems to be an entirely accepted and encouraged technique. While that would be intuitive to a human who's viewing the pages. how might Google detect when two sites that link to each other are linking because they are trusted business associates (valuable) as opposed to when they are doing a link exchange (devalued)? Thanks! Aviva

Finding competitor's 301's
Is there a way to find out what domains a competitor has 301'd to their main site? I am wondering if a competitor has hidden back links using a 301'd site.
