H1 Tags for Articles in Blog Category - confused ;-(
-
Dear Seomoz community
This is my first post here. Until now I was only browsing the Q&A and learned a lot just by reading the existing topics.
Since we launched our website with a new design last week I started to heavily use Seomoz to track down missing tags, descriptions and other on page issues.
Just out of curiosity I checked the page outline of the Seomoz blog. I was really surprised! Seomoz uses only H1 tags on their blog main page. Each article is wrapped in an H1 plus the blog title.
I am a total SEO beginner but until today I was thinking that using several H1 tags on one page is not optimal. We use one H1 tag on our site for the magazine category description (for example http://www.siam2nite.com/magazine ) and then for the articles H2.
So my question. Should I change my H2 to H1 for the magazine articles like Seomoz did?
Would really appreciate your advise on this
Regards,
Menelik

Hi Dana
Sorry for my late reply and thank you very much for your detailed explanation. Your answer helped me a lot specially the hint "thinking like a library"

First of all, let me say welcome to SEOMoz Q & A forum. THe best forum on or off the planet!
Okay, I understand you confusion. As SEOs we are all told "Multiple H1 tags...Bad!"
However, think about it this way: Imagine you are a resource in a library referencing articles on a variety of topics. You are basically presenting a page of abstracts (short summaries) of the documents. You have no idea, based on how the user navigated to your (index card) Web page, which article or topic is going to be of interest to the use. Consequently, you present a list of headlines, all equally stressed, equally important. They are presented to you this way because not a single one of them is more important to the hosting document than another. Okay so each document has a major title, headline, whatever you want to call it. Because it's a listing of equally important topics served to searchers in a broad audience, the multiple
tags actually make perfect sense.
Now, one could argue that
The Daily SEO Blog
should be the lone
title, but it really doesn't express what's most important on the page. Also, with a bunch of paginated pages it would be near impossible for a search engine to discern what is really important on the paginated pages if that same
tag was used on all of them. What really makes sense is that the individual headlines each gets and
tag. That signals to Google "Hey, Googlebot, this is a page with headlines and summaries that click through to the full articles."
You will notice that on the subsequent pages, the tag
The Daily SEO Blog
plus the
for the main article remain, but are the only
tags on the page.
In terms of <h>tags try to think like a librarian. This will help a lot in determining which ones to use where.</h>
Hope that helps!
Dana

H1 and H2 copy
Does the targeted keyword need to be embedded in a longer phrase for the H1 and H2 or is it better to have the keyword by itself?

Hi - How do you get rid of duplicate content that was accidentally created on a tag url? For example, when I published a new article, the content was duplicated on: /posts/tag/lead-generation/
the original article was created with: /posts/shippers-looking-for-freight-brokers/ How can I fix this so a new URL is not created every time I add a tag to a new posting?

Multiple and tags
It has recently come to our attention that some of the pages on our site have multiple and tags. I understand that this goes against best practices-- but I was wondering if anyone could tell me specifically how this could be impacting our site's performance and search rankings.

Should I include a meta description for my tags on posts
Hi Our crawl report detects that we have not put in a meta description for any of the tags we have used on our blog. (total tag words we have used is around 70). We have however, put a full description of each of our categories, do we really need to put a description for each of the tags we use? Will this really help us with SEO? Also can tags on posts be the same as the keyword your trying to rank the post/article about? For further information We are using Yoast.

Different Categories, Same Meta Description?
I've heard that having duplicate meta descriptions is bad for SEO and can even be the cause of penalties. However, a duplicate meta description would make sense for different categories on many sites. So I'm wondering what the best solution is for a case like this? One of my sites has around 150 topics, and each topic page is exactly the same, aside from including only things that are related to that specific topic. So why would I want to create 150 different meta descriptions? Not only is it time consuming, and nearly impossible to create 150 unique descriptions for the same type of content, but it also serves no purpose for visitors coming from the search engines. A logical approach would be to use the same meta description and just switch out the topics in the description... but then all of those descriptions would be 95% the same - and I imagine Google might see that as spam. So... suggestions?

Changing an Aged Category Name
I am interested in potentially changing a category name on our site, WirelessEmporium.com. This section has been called "Covers & Faceplates" for the better part of the decade. However, changing search trends, PPC data and search volume analysis have indicated that our preferable KW combo may be "Cases & Covers" instead. What are the potentially ramifications of making the switch now? We have a significant amount of age, link juice, etc built up toward our "Covers & Faceplates" section at the moment and all of their relevant URLs. A change would involve 301 redirects, rewriting of URLs, rewriting of all tags, img alt tags, etc.

Keyword Stuffing in Alt Tags!
Hello, I have on a main page over 50 images. The first page i want to optimize it for MAINKW (let's say). Now, if i use in the alt tags "MAINKW KW1", "MAINKW KW2", "MAINKW KW3" ... "MAINKW KW50" then Google may say that i stuff the MAINKW in that page? Those images are reprezentative for main Categories and i have direct links to them from the main page with the anchors KW1, KW2...KW50.

Using categories in Permalinks
I am looking at updating my WP Permalink structure and wanted to know if I should continue to include the category after my domain as in www.maximphotostudio.net/weddings/6081/columbus_wedding_photography/ or maybe www.maximphotostudio.net/6081/columbus_wedding_photography and www.maximphotostudio.net/6082/dayton_wedding_photography. Any help is appreciated.
