Where to learn SEO practices, especially local
-
I am looking to learn SEO as I know how important it is. I have basic understandings, but I don't know where to start, or what to add. my website is viralextent.com and apparently I'm not so good at ranking. I want to rank locally for "web design". I understand that I couldn't touch the national market right now as I can't even seem to grasp the local. I know everyone's time is valuable so I'm not looking for a free assessment. Where should I go to learn what I need to do next and kind of guide me through the process of becoming #1 for local? I am obviously an SEOmoz PRO member, where should I start here, or should I be looking somewhere else? Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Read up on localseoguide.com and use getlisted.org. But first, do some research. Type in your terms, either by using implicit or explicit searches.
Example:
Implicit search = "web design" (and using the auto geo/IP detection from Google and settings on your page)
Explicit search = "web design san diego", "web design san diego, ca"If no local results are shown, still go thru getlisted.org - but you will focus more on SEO, or "hybrid" SEO, not pure Local SEO pack optimization.
Didn't see any local pack results for web design in san diego for example.
Local citations are important, for example (links). But, so are reviews and other factors. Learn about the local ranking and optimization factors from the annual survey reports: http://www.davidmihm.com/blog/ and what to focus on.
Watch the 50 minute local seo training video on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7hJzQd-ZdA
Enjoy!

Perform a search for "web design." Do you see local search results or standard results? Google incorporates lo all search results for many queries, and the first place to start would be setting up a Google+ Local business page.

I would go through the guide on SEOmoz here http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo I think you will find that if you are willing to put the effort most of your answers on SEOmoz.
Good luck my friend - may SEO be with you!

Hi there, We'd like to add Schema markups to our site pages: business locations, services, blog, reviews, contacts, portfolio. Is there a clear list of possible fields for local business?

What's the best way for SEO newbie to analyze & fix a site after being hit by Panda?
Hi, I have a prospective client who was in the top 3 on Google for two of their primary keywords. They fell way back in the rankings immediately after Panda was rolled out on September 27, 2012. Two weeks ago, they were at position #118 for one keyword. After looking for them in Rank Checker today, they cannot be found in Google at all. Here's my question. Because of the "bad links" (some pointing to Porno sites)... what's the possibility that this situation cannot be fixed? I don't know... maybe I'm asking an irrelevant question. I'm attempting to assess the situation so I can go back and present my findings to the prospective client. I'm committed to understanding what's going on with their website so I can assess the situation properly. Fixing their problem starts with a correct assessment. They have a ranking problem, and I know I can fix that... IF all their site needs is white hat SEO. What I DON'T want is... to sell them SEO services, only to find out in 3-6 months... I made an incorrect diagnosis of the problem, and therefore sold them the wrong solution. I know I can close the sale if I can show them with reasonable substantiation that the damage is not beyond repair. I'm familiar with the basics of SEO, but I'm unfamiliar with how "bad linking" might effect the long-term commitment to optimizing. They're wondering if they should start over on another website. I was attempting to do an assessment to better understand if my typical approach on this site would be sufficient. Also... I wanted to get an assessment/report to show them something to substantiate my conclusion(s) about their website. If Open Site Explorer is sufficient to do the link analysis... great. At least I know I'm working with the right tool. All I have to do is learn how to use the tool quickly. At this point... I'm not sure which tool would be helpful. So... can you speak to the following 2 questions: 1.) How do you know when ranking problem is beyond fixing? 2.) What software/tool is ideal for doing some link analysis in order to assess the problem, and prescribe a solution? Thanks so much! Ramon

Local SEO Rankings Report Tools (based on several locations)?
Hi, Just a quick question. I am looking for a Rankings Report tool that allows a user to not only provide a list of Keywords, but also a list of Locations for which to check Google UK's ranking results. In practice, I would like to be able to enter 6 names of Towns next to my keyword list and get "localised results". Many thanks in advance, Cheers Greg

How to get organized for Freelance SEO
Hi there, I'm fairly new to SEO but have learned a substantial amount in the last 8 months or so. I currently run my own web design company but want to add a new SEO service to the list. My question to you all is this... How do other SEO'ers organise their week for clients with SEO needs? Do you dedicate a day per client, divide your day up into hourly segments per client? What i'm looking for is a rough guide as to how I should get organized for the new service that I want to provide. How do you monitor what you have been doing with a client? There are sooo many questions that I want to ask, ut feel I may end up driving people crazy. Any help/advice will be welcomed with open arms!! Many thanks.. Alex

Quote "There is no SEO software that can help optimize a site"
Hi all I am a developer for a small agency in the UK. I am using SEOmoz for a couple of our clients and I am also using it to learn from. So far I am finding it a great tool and this forum is also incredibly helpful. Now I also visit another forum called HighRankings.com and this months newsletter is a list of points that are defined as "SEO Mistakes". In it, point number 2 reads: "Repeat after me: There is no specific number of times a keyword phrase should be used in my content. There is no magic number of words that my pages should have written on them. And there is no best number of words or phrases that belong in a Title tag. And most of all: There is no SEO software that can optimize my website (despite the claims of their creators). Use your common sense to optimize your site! Learn how your target audience searches for products, services and information such as yours, and write about it accordingly on your website. Then write to make an emotional connection with your visitors so that they'll convert into happy customers." Now as a user of SEOmoz I wondered what others thought of this comment? Many thanks for reading. Kris

Tracking Local Keywords in Campaigns.
When selecting keywords to track in campaign mode, how should I enter the keywords for a company located in a city that shares the same name as another city in a different state? My assumption is that if you're searching for "Garden City Plumber" within Garden City Michigan that Google will know your IP and show local results (as opposed to results from Garden City California). If I want to track the key phrase "Garden City Plumber" in campaign mode how will SEOMoz know which city to deliver results for? Thanks in advance.

"Special pricing" on SEO DVDs?
The section for buying your dvd training lists the price for everyone at $119 and the special price for pro members at - $119. Then the text says that the special price will be shown when the item is added to the cart where the special price is - $119. Am I missing something here?
