Redesign Launch with change from ASP to PHP
-
My client is launching a new corporate website redesign. But the trick is, their old site was built in ASP and they want the new site to be a Wordpress site, built in PHP.
Their current website has A PR4/10 and MANY backlinks to its pages. I don't want to risk any SEO authority and make sure the transition is smooth. The current site only has less than 75 pages.
Can anyone give me a checklist of things I need to make sure get done? And how to do each?
For example:
1. How to forward the old domain to new URLs... (301s? DNS? HT Access?..not savvy)
2. Keep all the same URLs?
3. Don't change any content?...etc.
4. Submit new sitemap? or robots.txt file?
Also, I wanted to add a Wordpress Blog to the new site for SEO purposes, but since it's being built in Wordpress, do you recommend I have a subdomain on this site as www.blog.website.com? Or is this now not necessary since the entire thing is built in wordpress?
I would REALLY appreciate your time helping me on this. Thanks!
Derek

Clean URLs will help you out a lot, but you will probably still your site dance a little bit as Google gets to know the new content. You're not going to see near the damage though I first mentioned. The more you can keep it like the old the better. If you clean it up a little bit as you implement the pages, you could actually see an increase in your rankings when things settle down because it will look like fresh content to Google.

New Development:
I don't know if this changes the game or not, but I just found out that Clean URLs are currently being used in the site. So changing a webpage with the URL www.website.com/page3 that is built in .asp should not be affected (at least not for people who provide us backlinks) by changing the same page to have the same URL, but the only difference being that it is built in .php now. Would I be correct to assume this? And would we still see the damage you mentioned above if having these Clean SEO-friendly URLs is the case?

I'm afraid you're going to feel this one no matter what effort you go to, but you can definitely minimize the pain. You WILL see a drop in traffic, but oftentimes a change like this is necessary for long-term success. Long-term in this case can be up to a year and you may see traffic drop by as much as 80%, so be prepared.
301 Redirects: Take full advantage of 301's. Try as hard as possible to make sure you have a place to point all the old pages to in the new site.
404: If When you run in to a situation where you just can't 301, be sure to set up custom 404's to help search engines, and more importantly visitors to find what they should be finding. No matter how careful you are in migrating, you're going to end up with some 404 page not found issues, so this is a majorly important step.
Contact sites that have links to old URL and request the links be updated. Painful, yes, but worth it if you can get them to change.

Changing 301s or using 302s after a relaunch?
We are doing a relaunch and changing nearly every URL. Since the list of redirects is > 5.000 we might have some mistakes we want to change later (i.e. having a 301 to a directory but finding a single page later that fits its purpose better). Can I change the 301 later and will seachengines get that? Can I use 302s for a week or two until I'm sure about my redirects and only than do propper 301s?

Losing Organic Traffic After A Redesign?
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. After a recent site relaunch caused a substantial loss of organic website traffic. http://www.health4mom.org/ the site went live 2 months ago(using the same url's as the previous one) unfortunately the organic traffic have dropped (-65%). I would appreciate if anyone can let me know why we lost organic traffic. Many thanks in advance. Antonio

Retaining SEO value when changing the shopping cart software
I am looking into purchasing an existing ecommerce site with high SEO rankings. However, the site is old and beyond outdated. The shopping cart would need to be updated (say, to Magento). However, an updated shopping cart will force a change in the URLs (from example.com/category.asp to example.com/category). Will the SEO value be lost? Does anyone have any experience with this issue? There is a significant amount of money for me at stake so I would really appreciate to hear your experiences in this matter.

Changing links after 301 already in place: is it nessasary?
Hi:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | romanbond
I'm in the process of making sure I have a single URL that gets all link juice for every page. As the first step, I'm implementing 301 redirects. My question is: After 301 redirect is in place will it still be necessary to update links on my site(s) that point to the old URLs. For example, I just 301-redirected mysite.com/folder/index.html to mysite.com/folder/ - and it works fine, but I still have many links on the same site and other sites that link to mysite.com/folder/index.html. Is it important to change those links to mysite.com/folder/ as well or could I just leave them as they are since the 301 is taking care of the redirect anyway.. I mean, I will probably change them in time, just to keep things tidy. But if it's important I would definitely do it sooner rather than later. Thank you in advance.0 -

Adding index.php at the end of the url effect it's rankings
I have just had my site updated and we have put index.php at the end of all the urls. Not long after the sites rankings dropped. Checking the backlinks, they all go to (example) http://www.website.com and not http://www.website.com/index.php. So could this change have effected rankings even though it redirects to the new url?

Changing Business Addresses
Anyone have a good local search "best practices" resource for advising a client who is changing business addresses (aside from cross your fingers). For example, order of updating local citations (website first, google places, others). Time frame for update to take effect? Other issues folks have faced in updating addresses? I regularly follow David Mihm, Mike Blumenthal, & Andrew Shotland, I was just curious what the Moz community might be able to add. Thanks.
