Question About Keyword Difficulty Report
-
If I am trying to assess the difficulty of ranking for a longtail keyword phrase that is 3 or more words long, should I put that phrase in quotes when I enter into the Keyword Analysis Tool or not? For example, let's say I want to see how hard it would be to rank for the phrase "best educational resources for teachers". Should I enter into the keywords analysis tool as "best educational resources for teachers" or just as best educational resources for teachers? Which one would give me the most accurate difficulty assessment for that phrase?
-
Good luck - hope I didn't steer you wrong I can't say I always follow the logic in these tools...however that's a totally different story!
-
Hah! That's really funny. Now I have to go try it.
-
Thanks Andrea and danatanseo. I was thinking the same thing. I was wondering because so far every keyword phrase that I have entered into the tool (no matter how ridiculous) has come back as moderately or extremely difficult to rank for. For example, the phrase "watermelon wrapped in barbwire" even comes back as highly competitive (53%) unless I enter it in in quotes. Most of the sites that rank for this silly phrase have low DA and PA.

Dana makes an interesting point of Boolean searches. Unless you're using a tool that specifically uses that method (like MyBuzz Metrics), most tools are set up to already assume it's one phrase and thus don't need quotes.
-
Hi Andy. I would enter it into the tool without quotes. I believe searching a term with quotes is a type of Boolean search that most real people don't take the time to use. Someone might correct me on the Boolean part, lol, but unless you're visitors are librarians I doubt they use quote, brackets etc when typing terms into the search bar. Hope that helps!

Having Trouble Ranking .us for branded Keyword
Hi Mozers, First time poster here. I run the website http://OrangeOctop.us/, it provides winning tips for FIFA, NBA 2K, NHL. The domain authority is 22 but I am unable to rank for the term OrangeOctopus. I know there are dozens of factors that should be assessed when looking at competition in Google (such as backlinks, domain age/relevance, social). However, I feel like you guys might have some suggestions for being able to rank for OrangeOctopus. Thank you! Joey

What is a desirable range for a keyword's difficulty rating?
Hi all! I am new to the world of SEO and just getting started. As I am doing keyword research I am consistently finding difficulty ratings in the 40%-50% range. Is this considered a "par" rating or should I be looking for "a longer tail" rating? Thanks

Keyword - Competition between competitors
So, I'm about 2-3 weeks into my subscription and see a renewal coming. I love the information I'm getting - but I really want to maximize my capabilities with these tools. Any article/blogs or forum post suggestions that I should read would be awesome, right now I'm still in that phase where i see lots of cool things - but have no idea to fully use them to really give me that even bigger boost. My First Question is - There are some keywords, that I climb and sometimes slip. But overall a competitor and i flip flop between 15-22 range for it. What would be a good way for me to really add that extra push to throw me down into the top ten and leave them in the dust?.. Also on the Keyword topic - There are a lot of keywords they probably rank for that I don't, what is the best way to go about identifying keywords they may targeting/have a good presence in that I'm not aware of. I do have a site that is on multiple newspapers, and .gov sites. Among other things... This has already proven to be very good for me. But I'm 99% sure I have a few/lot of leaks, that if they were plugged - We would see a lot of good things come from those results.

Domain Authority Question
So in looking at my first campaign with 3 of my top competitors, I have a domain authority of 65, and my competitors are 31, 43, and 38 and yet all of them outrank me by quite a bit. How can I take this research and make some sense of it to beat them in rankings? Thanks!

How to gauge competitiveness on niche keywords
I'm looking to create a website selling a specific niche range of products. For example 'hair extensions.' Using opensite explorer it's fairly easy to guage the competition for similar websites focused on this niche only e.g www.hairextensionsworld.com - I just look at their authority, number of incoming links, anchortext links etc. However, I'm finding it more difficult to guage the competition if a large merchant, for example Amazon, has a page ranking for a specific keyphrase I'm after. Often the large merchant doesn't have a lot of external links to the specific page, but nonetheless it has power from being on the domain of the large merchant. Are there any good tools / metrics for guaging the competition of such pages? Page authority I guess is one? Thanks
