Main vs Pointing URL Confusion
-
Hi, I have a new website that deals with 3 very similar businesses The main purpose of the website is to assist the consumer to search, compare and book chaffered transportation online. The 3 businesses are taxi cab hire, limo hire, party bus hire. My main domain is www.mytaxicab.co.za. I also own the domains mylimo.co.za and mypartybus.co.za. My question is, from a best practice SEO perspective, how should I set this up. Should I have one main site www.mytaxicab.co.za and have the 2 other niche domain names point in eg user types www.mypartybus.co.za and lands on www.mytaxicab.co.za/party-bus-hire or is there a better way? Any help or insite would be appreciated

Thank you for your response Mark. I have bought a domain name that better suits the overreaching purpose of the website. www.myride.co.za, the domain is 5 years old and sounds good.... I think;) Now one more question, Should I use www.myride.co.za as a landing page then link to the 3 individual niche sites through the main menu or should www.myride.co.za be the main website, and when the user clicks on | Taxi Cab Hire | Limo Hire | Party Bus Hire should that point them at the domain relevant to each of those businesses..... eg user clicks on party bus hire and get sent to page that looks the same but hosted under www.mypartybus.co.za the only commonality of the 3 businesses is that they are chaffered transport.... but the businesses themselves hit 3 different industries, thus my choice of www.myride.co.za for main page I know this is complex , but I want to start right from the start, any help from this community would be appreciated! I guess to make it clear the best thing to do is visit my current main page www.mytaxicab.co.za I am putting a big drive into SEO and PPC and need somthing that will work well for both as well as link building etc etc Thank you so much Chris Irwin

What you are asking about is often called "microsites"; you may want to search for that term. There are many arguments both for and against, but in your situation, I would recommend keeping them apart, since you say that these are three different businesses, and since none of the three domain names sounds like an overarching name. Now, if you had a domain name like mychafferedtransportation.co.za, it might be worth combining them and thus reap the benefit of a a higher visibility for the overall page. But don't worry too much about SEO specifics. The most important consideration is whether this fits in your overall business strategy; whether you want to keep the businesses independent from each other or appear as one combined brand.

Vanity URLs are being indexed in Google
We are currently using vanity URLs to track offline marketing, the vanity URL is structured as www.clientdomain.com/publication, this URL then is 302 redirected to the actual URL on the website not a custom landing page. The resulting redirected URL looks like: www.clientdomain.com/xyzpage?utm_source=print&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=printcampaign. We have started to notice that some of the vanity URLs are being indexed in Google search. To prevent this from happening should we be using a 301 redirect instead of a 302 and will the Google index ignore the utm parameters in the URL that is being 301 redirect to? If not, any suggestions on how to handle? Thanks,

Conversion of URL's for Readability
Reading over Rands latest Post about URL structure I had a quick question about the best way to convert URL's that don't have perfect URL structure... Current the Structure of our E-commerce store has a structure that is not friendly with domain.com/product/zdcd-jobd3d-fdoh what is the easiest way to convert these to read URL's without causing any disruptions with the SERP. Are we talking about a MOD-Rewrite in the CMS.......

What Happens to the Existing YouMoz Blog Post URL If It Is Promoted to the Main SEOmoz Blog?
Howdy SEOmoz Fans, Im wondering what happens to an existing YouMoz blog post if it gets promoted to the main SEOmoz blog? Does SEOmoz do a 301 redirect to the new URL? It seems like the old post disappears, but perhaps I'm not digging deep enough. Anyone have experience with this happening on SEOmoz? I'd like to know so I can figure out how to do something similar to that on one of my own sites (promoting UGC to a main blog). Thanks!

Landing Page URL Structure
We are finally setting up landing pages to support our PPC campaigns. There has been some debate internally about the URL structure. Originally we were planning on URL's like: domain.com /california /florida /ny I would prefer to have the URL's for each state inside a "state" folder like: domain.com /state /california /florida /ny I like having the folders and pages for each state under a parent folder to keep the root folder as clean as possible. Having a folder or file for each state in the root will be very messy. Before you scream URL rewriting :-). Our current site is still running under Classic ASP which doesn't support URL rewriting. We have tried to use HeliconTech's ISAPI rewrite module for IIS but had to remove it because of too many configuration issues. Next year when our coding to MVC is complete we will use URL rewriting. So the question for now: Is there any advantage or disadvantage to one URL structure over the other?

Do keywords in url parameter count?
I have a client who is on an older ecommerce platform that does not allow url rewrites in anyway. It would cost a ton of money to custom dev a solution. Anyways right now they have set up a parameter on their product urls to at least get the keyword in there. My question is, will this keyword actually be counted since it is in a parameter? An example url is http://domain.com/Catalog.aspx?Level1=01&Level2=02&C=Product-name-here Does this 'product-name-here' count as having the keyword in the url according to google?

3 URLS Being Created All For The Same Page
I use wordpress for my blog and for some reason it is creating triple urls for my pages. I am not sure it has always been like this or not. I just noticed it in the errors section of SEO Moz. http://www.kisswedding.com/blog/?gid=7&r=20 http://www.kisswedding.com/blog/ashley-and-daniels-rainy-day-diy-farm-wedding/?gid=7&r=20 http://www.kisswedding.com/blog/ashley-and-daniels-rainy-day-diy-farm-wedding/ It's all the exact same page. Is there something I can do in my settings to make this stop. I don't imagine this is good. Ya think....ha! I saw this is the SEO Moz error area for Missing Title Tags. Apparently the number has gone from 200 to 400 which is weird because I never gave my blog posts meta stuff and I haven't written 200 pages since SEO Moz's last crawl.

Maybe I changed something on my blog settings without even knowing. I can't think for the life of me what that would be though. Thanks so much and I appreciate any help received. Edited to add: I added some plugins over the past week. Maybe it's one of these?
