Merging two websites to one...
-
Hi all. Could do with a second opinion on this please...
At present a client of ours owns two shops (both doing the same but in towns about 20 miles apart - they sell flooring, but using different names) and has a website for each. The plan is to rebrand both of these stores the same and merge both websites into one.
The problem comes that both of the individual websites rank very well in their respective Google Local search results and I fear that killing one of the sites will mean that one store will vanish from the local listings. One domain is a DA 45 and the other a DA 11 so the plan is to use the stronger of the two domains.
The question I would like to ponder with people wiser than myself is how can we ensure that the new single domain ranks for both locations in the local? Would the easiest solution be to have pages such as domain.com/store1 and domain.com/store2 with full listings for that store inc name, address, phone number, customer reviews etc?
At present the DA 45 domain ranks very well in it's Google local so we need to find a way to change the homepage of that to have both the stores phone numbers but without affecting the local listing. I was considering adding the second phone number as a text based image so that it's visible for people but not for bots
Finally, would 301 redirecting the now unused store to domain.com/store2 help with ensuring that we do not lose any local listing for that keyword? If not, are there any suggestions people could offer up
Many thanks for any help and sorry for the very long question
Carl

That makes sense. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Rod
To be honest, very little content from the current site will be moved over as most of the products and services are offered in both locations. Given the impact on the local rankings for the domain which is being 'killed' I may suggest to the client that they keep that site live and let it continue with it's rankings for the time being. As, and when, the new site starts to rank for the same keyword the old site could be withdrawn

This can be a tricky move. You are correct in saying that you should create 2 separate folders for each branch but try to make sure you keep your localized keywords for each branch.
If you are going to be using the domain of your stronger branch, you will most probably be moving the current content to new pages and folders (From website.com/ to website.com/branch1) so you will most likely see a drop in ranking until the new pages start gaining authority. You are basically starting over except your domain will still have some of it's authority.
301 redirecting a page/domain won't transfer any authority.

URL structure for am International website with subdirectories
Hello, The company I am working for is launching a new ecommerce website (just a handful of products).
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Lvet
In the first phase, the website will be English only, but it will be possible to order internationally (20 countries).
In a second phase, new languages and countries will be added. I am wondering what is the best URL structure for launch: Start with a structure similar to website.com/language/content (later on we will add other languages than english) Start with a structure similar to website.com/country/content
3) Start with a structure similar to website.com/country-language/content (at the beginning it will be all website.com/country-en/content) What do you think? Cheers

Furniture company with 1 website or a few different ones?
Hello everyone. We are a furniture company, selling sofas, mattress, outdoor furniture, many BBQ's in the future - Separate things, but all related in a way. I was thinking it would make us look like an 'authority' to have a separate website for everything and be more specialised and also look more specialised. What would be better for SEO?? Also (sneeking in a second question!), I have around 50 sofa designs - is it ok if the Meta description is the same for each one or should I change a word or 2 around? Many thanks!!

Two sites, two domains, two brands, 98% same content
There are two affiliated brick & mortar retail stores moving into e-commerce. For non-marketing reasons separate e-commerce websites are desired. The two brands are based in separate (nearby) cities in the same Canadian province. Although the store name and branding will be different, the content on the site will either be near duplicates or exact duplicates. The more I look into this on Google and SEOmoz QA, the more I am concerned about the SEO implications of this. SEOmoz QA: Multiple cities/regions websites - duplicate content? "So, yes, because you are offering the same services at second location, you are thinking correctly about the need to rewrite all content so it's not a duplicate of site #1." Duplicate content - Webmaster Tools Help "However, in some cases, content is deliberately duplicated across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or win more traffic… In the rare cases in which Google perceives that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we’ll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved. As a result, the ranking of the site may suffer, or the site might be removed entirely from the Google index, in which case it will no longer appear in search results. ... Duplicate content on a site is not grounds for action on that site unless it appears that the intent of the duplicate content is to be deceptive and manipulate search engine results." Unfortunately, I would say there's very little chance that rewritten content will happen in the foreseeable future. With that said, I'd be greatly appreciative of the concerns and remedies that the SEOmoz community has to offer (even if they're for future use). Thanks in advance.
