Why is this site ranking #1?
-
I've done extensive research into http://www.maggiesottero.com/ and cannot come up to any definitive conclusions as to why this site is ranking #1 for the term "wedding dresses." The page is not optimized for the keyword.
**Any thoughts? **

Sorry, everyone that responded so far. Should have been more clear here. We are well aware of all the factors mentioned above, however if you conduct some competitive analysis relative to all other sites in top 10, they are clearly getting beat out in all categories mentioned below by more than 1 site. More links from a higher PR and Domain and Page Authority, more exact match and phrase match anchor text, more linking root domains, more linking C block IP's, more external links, better internal links to the homepage with exact match anchor text, more highly optimized on-page elements, better social engagement, etc.
We are well aware of the general info mentioned above, but that is why it is so puzzling. If they are so clearly getting beat on many of these metrics, why in the world are they ranking at #1 vs. companies that are beating them on the metrics that matter?

Plus it has a solid domain age: Creation Date: 2001-07-16
-
Look at the strength of their link profile:
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.maggiesottero.com
Their home page has a page authority of 74 which is fairly strong. Look at the anchor text section, they have many links with "wedding dress" and other variations of this term in the link text. They also seem to have a strong social presence on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
With shorter term phrases the link profile is a massive factor.

Well the title tag has "wedding gowns" in it, and if you look at the backlink profile in open site explorer you'll see an awful lot of relevant anchor text around wedding dresses/gowns from other sites in the wedding niche and from high profile/high authority sites... I don't see why this is a mystery! (2,058 linking root domains).
Ranking isn't just about the on-page optimisation.

What tool can I use to find the top traffic-driving keyword for a batch of pages from multiple sites?
I thought I might be able to use Ahref's Batch Analysis for this, but that just gives stats on backlinks. I have a several lists of thousands of pages scraped for particular sets of keywords, but what I need is some way to automate fetching the biggest keyword that each page ranks for - biggest being the keyword that is estimated to drive the most organic traffic. Is there a tool out there that does something like this?

# of links and how it impacts ranking
Hi everyone I was running a competitor analysis in Moz Pro of my site and 3 competitors that are ranked above me. One of the things I noticed is that my # of total links is very high compared to 2 of my competitors(please see attachment). Other seo tools are telling me the same. This is mainly due to a few affiliate sites that have us in their footer. I was wondering if this could impact our ranking if some of these sites have very low domain authority and have thousands of backlinks to our site? I am looking into starting the disavowing process. Why do some sites perform great but show no data on the tool bar?
Hey everyone, Been a paid member for 3 days and this is my first time posting 🙂 I have a quick question about competitive analysis with the MozBar. I do not want to point out the exact website (unless that is something cool to do on this forum), but there is a site ranking for a single keyword in the local 7 pack in slot one, which is also slot one for the SERP entirely. When I go to look at the page in more detail, the MozBar is showing no DA, PA, anything at all, and the Open Site Explorer is showing no links internal or external. I know that the page has to have at least some of these elements populated in order to be ranking for a term this competitive, so why is the bar not showing anything? The bar works GREAT on other sites below this one. Thanks for any help!

Why would a site with virtually no external links and low authority rank very high?
Hey there: I'm not sure anyone's going to be game to answer this but... I have designed, done on-page optimization for and done ongoing content marketing and linkbuilding for a local fitness site. The site is about nine months old and I am attempting to achieve rank for the keyword "personal trainers in philadelphia." We've made progress; having taken a new site from +100 to 19 in about four or five months worth of content creation and linkbuilding on a very modest budget. I'm not complaining. What has me confused though is that there are one or two sites that are ranking very high for this keyword string with considerably shoddier metrics than our site and I'm wondering how a stock WP theme site with very few inbound links can rank top five for a reasonably competitive keyword? Our site is http://vtrainersinc.com. The site I've noticed that ranks top five and seems to have an inferior SEOMoz profile is bodycrafters.net. Anybody got any ideas as to why these things seem to occur? I have this feeling this site has stumbled upon a magic SEO elixir which I'd like to get my hands on!

How did this little site rank #2?
Keyword: "adoption agency" Site: http://www.opendooradoption.org These guys are ranked #2 for this very competitive term in all US regions. They're beating Bethany (and my company) who are orders of magnitude larger in both company size and link profile. Their domain authority is 40, and they have less than 200 links pointing to them with "adoption agency" in the anchor according to OSE. Their on-site is pretty much nonexistent. Does anyone have any theories as to how they accomplished this?

Keywords in URL structure for Large Site
We are creating a national real estate website which will contain 2mil+ listings. Our aim is to compete with the National leaders in the field. We are trying to lock down a url structure and it basically comes down to if we should put a major keyword in the url structure or not. The structure would have regional keywords naturally. Its the addition of a more descriptive key word which is in question. Our domain name has no keywords in it. For the sake of this example, we would be targeting "city real estate"... oursite.com/real-estate/state/city/ or oursite.com/state/city/ Here is what the big sites use as an example: http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/New-York-NY/ http://www.trulia.com/NY/New_York/ http://www.trulia.com/real_estate/New_York-New_York/ http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/New-York Id love to not have to throw keywords in there and be as clean as possible but i also dont want to shoot myself in the foot. The big boys do add additional keywords in the url, does that mean we should? Id much rather be a leader than a follower but again, I dont want to mess this up from the start and these guys have probably tested this (or have they?). Input would be greatly appreciated.

Why there is no even close correlation between MajesticSEO data and Open Site? Explorer?
I compared my site home page against my competitor homepage with Open Site Explorer and I found that according Open Site Explorer I have only 3 backlinks where in MajesticSEO I have more than 100 backlinks in 'Historic' data and more 90 in '30 days fresh data'. Why there is no even close correlation between MajesticSEO data and Open Site Explorer? How SEOMoz count backlinks?
