Google News Referral Traffic Gone after CMS Upgrade
-
Hoping someone can help. I've tried the Google forum which is it's usual vacuous hole of no help.
We recently upgraded our CMS which now includes automated sitemaps (not sure if this impacts news sitemaps, though). Anyway, after rollout, we're no longer getting any traffic from Google News.
Sequence of Events:
1. Dec. 13 launch
2. Google news referral traffic stopped
3. IT tried to 'fix' and now we're getting the elusive 'publication name' message
The publication name specified in your Sitemap does not match the publication name we have for your site in our database. Please check that the publication name in your Sitemap exactly matches the publication name displayed for your articles in Google News.
4. Retested sitemap
When I retest the news sitemap, it returns 0 errors.
When I do a site:mnn.com (our website) on the Google New Homepage, new content is showing up in SERP
Yet, still no google news referral traffic.
Our news sitemap is www.mnn.com/googlenews.xml
Can someone help? We're a news site, and can't afford to lose this traffic. Would love an early Christmas present.
Thanks!!
Lisa

Hey Lisa,
I was just reading a post about Google News errors and I remembered your question.
This part might help?
Unknown publication name – an error that I frequently come across in troubleshooting Google News issues is an “unknown publication name” error for the Google News sitemap, which is reported in the Sitemaps section of the site’s Google Webmaster Tools profile**.** This error is triggered when the publication name used in the <name>tags in the Google News sitemap is not an exact match to the publication name in Google News’ database</name>. To determine the correct name to use do a [site:domain] search in Google News and see what publication name is displayed for the indexed pages**.**

Lisa,
Tough one. Sorry for the delay, had to ping a few folks.
As for the naming error, is it possible that the site was registered in Google News originally with a slightly different name? In the application form, the name of the publication is a pretty important step, and any minor difference might raise a flag. The Sitemap calls the publication "Mother Nature Network". Perhaps it was registered with something slightly different?
Another thought: Considering the site is showing up when you do a Google News Site Search, is it possible that the traffic hasn't disappeared overall, but it's just not being properly attributed in Google Analytics anymore?
-
BTW, I already posted my issue in the google news publisher forum to no avail.
-
It quite literally coincided with the rollout of the new CMS. We averaged 2K visits a day from Google News and now we get nothing.

We recently upgraded our CMS which now includes automated sitemaps (not sure if this impacts news sitemaps, though).
How did it work previously?
Did traffic go down in general? I know there G changed the way analytics interprets image/product based searches and just changes how they were categorized (still receiving the traffic, just labeled differently)
I also recommend posting your issue here and seeing if a rep can help get it resolved.

Fake Links indexing in google
Hello everyone, I have an interesting situation occurring here, and hoping maybe someone here has seen something of this nature or be able to offer some sort of advice. So, we recently installed a wordpress to a subdomain for our business and have been blogging through it. We added the google webmaster tools meta tag and I've noticed an increase in 404 links. I brought this up to or server admin, and he verified that there were a lot of ip's pinging our server looking for these links that don't exist. We've combed through our server files and nothing seems to be compromised. Today, we noticed that when you do site:ourdomain.com into google the subdomain with wordpress shows hundreds of these fake links, that when you visit them, return a 404 page. Just curious if anyone has seen anything like this, what it may be, how we can stop it, could it negatively impact us in anyway? Should we even worry about it? Here's the link to the google results. https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Amshowells.com&oq=site%3A&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i57j69i58.1905j0j1&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=91&ie=UTF-8 (odd links show up on pages 2-3+)

No google traffic for this site? Help?
Hi We have not done this web site http://climateacs.co.uk but have now picked it up and its getting no traffic what so ever from google do you think its been blacklisted? I have added it to my webmaster tools and there are no manual actions on it and most of the backlinks on google webmaster tools are from yell.com. However when I run it on opensiteexplorer I am seeing some chinese type links?? It is not really showing many search queries at all when you view them in webmaster tools under United Kingdom. I was going to start citation building for the address to help support the google places entry but just wanted to see what other peoples opinion was really on this site? Thanks Tracy

Google Places Question......
Hi Guys. I am working with a photographer they do not have a studio they shoot on location. However I noticed many photographers within their industry have their home address listed in their google places, and they too shoot on location. My client doesn't want their home address listed so I wondered what options there would be? Do you think renting mail forwarding address would suffice?

Rel=canonical and Google analytics referrals
Hello guys, If I put (rel=can) from site1.com/page1 to site2.com/page1, will site2.com see in his Google Analytics that people are coming from site1.com in the referrals section or somewhere else? I can't find anything on the web about that. Thanks.

What else: struggling with google position
Hi. I understand everyone is offering their time for free here so any advice or support is much appreciated. http://www.cytronex.com

PA 44 || mR 4.6 || mT 5.73 || 986 links from 43 Root Domains
DA 33 || 3,942 links from 71 Domains We've dropped from position 25ish to position 70ish in keyword searches for 'electric bikes'. I've tried everything and I just don't understand! It's genuine content, the actual product is increasingly popular, we have several links from sites which are (well, to my mind) reasonable quality. I've only just been brought in to look at this and my lack of any SEO or web experience is not putting my boss off expecting an instant solution 😞 As I'm only just getting to grips with it, Analytics was only installed about a month ago so I can't pin point a moment when it dropped. We're consistently out-positioned by sites with lower PA/DA scores. Any insight anyone might have would be amazing! Thanks

Sitemaps for Google
In Google Webmaster Central, if a URL is reported in your site map as 404 (Not found), I'm assuming Google will automatically clean it up and that the next time we generate a sitemap, it won't include the 404 URL. Is this true? Do we need to comb through our sitemap files and remove the 404 pages Google finds, our will it "automagically" be cleaned up by Google's next crawl of our site?

But I also saw video from Google's offical blog and it said "Google spider come from all around the world." At this point I am really confused. Q1) I researched and it seems like Google spiders have only US IP address. THen what does exactly mean by "Google spider come from all around the world."? Q2) If Google spider have only US IP address, what happen to site which use IP delivery? Is this means that Google spider always redirect to us site since they only have US IP? Can anyone help me to understand?? One more questions! When Google analyzing for cloaking issue, do you think Google analyze when spider crawls the site or after they crawled the site?
