No longer in top 100 for branded keyword - How!?
-
Got a weird one here...
Won't give away actual URL but for this example let's say client's site is:
Many of the longtail keyword-targeted subpages/posts are still ranking pretty well. We recently went through and optimized the site based on poor scores we found from crawl reports from SEO Moz, which included renaming some sub-pages, eliminating duplicate content pages, archives, etc (it's a wordpress site, about 4 years old).
This site used to rank at the top or near it for the search "purple bananas".
However, after we optimized the site it's almost completely fallen off the radar of Google, turns up way over 100 for the search "purple bananas".
Strangely, if we search "purplebananas" we're at the top still.
Any idea what's going on here?
Are we potentially over-optimized or something weird for our own brand!?
Any troubleshooting tips?
FWIW the changes were made about 6 weeks ago and while we're steadily building links, I don't think this is the standard "Google dance".
Thanks!

Steve, it sounds like www.purplebananas.com is the same as the keyword you're needing to rank for, correct? A couple possibilities here:
1. SEOmoz's data is inaccurate.
2. There is a quality issue with your site on some level.
There has been some significant Google algorithm updates for exact match domains recently. It may require an inclusion request to Google after you've made some updates. If you haven't already, make sure you're using the latest version of Wordpress and install Yoast's SEO for Wordpress plugin. Make sure your XML sitemaps and Robots.txt are set up correctly. Also, make sure you're in compliance from the Google Webmasters Tools perspective (no notices or warnings).
If you find that you're not listed anymore for your domain name, it's possible you've been removed due to a trademark penalty, which means there's some significant issues with duplicate content or Google thinks you're trying to spam it in one way or another.
Having a pro evaluate the site and your various TLDs for major no-no's may be a good solution if you cannot resolve it with the steps above.
Hope that helps and best of luck.

Hi Tommy,
Thanks for the input. I did an on-page analysis through SEO moz and just fixed a few issues I had (exact keyword was missing from a few elements, though I don't believe we touched these while optimizing the site 6 weeks ago).
The homepage now has a perfect score through the SEO Moz optimization check for "purple bananas" keyword, so I'm hoping that does the trick.
If not, any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Steve,
Could it be that while you are cleaning up your website for SEO such as changing the Title Tag and H1 headers that you removed the keyword "purple bananas'? Did you have these keywords on some of your on-page factors and recently removed it?
-
Both.
URL is (not literally, fake example): www.purplebananas.com
Trying to rank well for the search "purple bananas"
-
Is Purple Bananas the company name or is Purple Bananas the main keyword you're trying to rank for?

How does OSE select top 10,000 links
Quick question about OSE, if you are extracting with excel all inbound links from a big site like IMDB.com, OSE only exports 10,000. However IMDB has alot more links then that. I was wondering what criteria does OSE use to select those 10,000 links from the 100,000+ which IMDB has. Is it a random selection of those 10,000 links or does it select those 10,000 links based on metrics like DA or PA? For the settings i have selected: followed + 301s, only external, pages on this root domain, group by domain. Cheers, Chris

How do i target keywords locally
I am working for a cosmetic surgeon with clinics in three geographic places. I would like to give him specific keywords that he can go after successfully. When I use the keyword tool with terms like botox cosmetic staten island or breast augmentation tarrytown, I get competitive rankings like 36% or 37%, but it doesnt tell me if there are only a few searchers doing this per month. In Google's Adwords tool, it thinks that the number fo searchers with these same terms is too small to measure, literally giving me back a dash (= insignificant traffic). However, it I use Google Adwords with more general terms, say breast augmentation surgeon, and get a medium/110 global monthly searches, when I come back to SEOmoz tool and assess the same keyword, I find that the traffic picks up doctor sites in Arizona and elsewhere, where clearly no one who wants cosmetic surgery in new York is going to fly to Arizona for it. So, how do I ensure a balance between targeting too little traffic but including the names of specific towns, and targetting more general terms but not having local prospects. Has anyone tackled this in a specific medical niche?

Avoid Keyword Stuffing in Document
I have been implementing changes to our site outlined by the
Moz Pro | | Confused.com
on-page report tool. One of the most common issues it highlighted with our site
was Avoid Keyword
Stuffing in Document. I have started reducing the number of
keywords on each page so it falls under the recommended 15. So far we haven’t
seen any positive effects from this and i am a little concerned we might be
seeing some negative effect (very early days). Has anyone else implemented this change recently and what effect
did it have? Is this recommendation more in preparation to the up and coming
update from Google that will penalise over optimised sites? Any info much appreciated Jos Davies0 -
Pass Page LinkJuice? Or Pass Keyword LinkJuice?
I have a popular page that is not one of the three pages that I am hoping to raise awareness of (want to focus on). The dilemma I am trying to understand is that I really don't want to encourage all the flow from the popular to ONE of my hopeful pages (focus pages). Rather, I want to focus the keyword portions of that page to help the three hopeful pages. So I consider the rel=canonical tag.... err no. rel=canonical would pass ALL my popular page link juice to ONE of my three hopeful pages. What's the best way to pass the keyword link juice relevant to each of my three hopeful pages their, um, portion, of the popular page link juice. I'm white hat by preference. All four pages are good legitimate landing pages, and of course I dread sabotaging the popularity of what is working. Suggestions? Advice?

Any plans to allow direct comparison between a selected website (client) and top competitors?
Hi, I really like the SEOMoz keyword difficulty tool. It currently reports metrics between the top 10 positions. Is there any plan to introduce the facility to directly compare metrics between a selected website and that of other competing websites. For example, a clients' website compared to the top 10 results, or compared to a number of other selected competiors websites? Best wishes, David

How many keywords can I look at at once in keyword difficulty tool?
Can I do like 15 at once? I'm also looking at a way to export all the data from multiple keywords in one view, it seems I can only export individual keywords. Is there a better seomoz tool to accomplish this?
