301 Redirect ! Joomla Pages, Already ranking. ( just wanted to change the url
-
hey guys hope everyone had a new year.
I am ranking for a page on my site that i want to ( not specifically move ), but just change the url name: It is too long i think and i want to move it from one portion of my architecture to another menu.
I have never physically done a 301 redirect myself, always had someone do it for me.
I wanted some pointers. Since it is a fairly new site 4 months old!
What are my options.
Do i need to 301 redirect the page, if i am changing the Structure and AI of my site, or can i just change the url as is and it will still get ranked?
How do i keep that url put delete the page and redirect it ?
Sorry its very simple but i wanted to get the communities help to continue on !
Best Wishes
HAmpig

I'll do you one better. Here's a handy code generator that should get you going.
http://www.htaccessredirect.net/
Once you've made the .htaccess file, put it in the root of your site and it should begin to 301 the old page to the new.

Highlander Thanks.
Yes i do run my own server. Virtual server from godaddy
Just as well i use Joomla and it does not have any 301 options. The coding is what i am mostly worried about , how do i code a specific page to 301 redirect in my htaccess.??
Is there any docs for that you may refer me to ?

A 301 will retain most of the rank of the previous page. It is considered a best practice to use them when you move URLs. Changing your URL without it means that you will likely be hit with a duplicate content penalty and the new page may not rank well, especially if the old page doesn't return an invalid code (i.e. 404)
You can do a 301 in a few ways
1. Use a programming language (PHP, .NET, etc) to have your web server return the 301 header
2. Use a directive file (i.e. in Apache, you can usually use .htaccess) to return a 301 header
3. In the site config of your web server you can also specify a 301 there. This is generally only available if you run your own server (i.e. a virtual server, etc)

Do more links from sub-domains to domain (website) hurt rankings?
Hi all, If there are multiple sub-domains like abc.website.com, 123.website.com, etc...and if the top pages of website are linked from multiple sub-domains via top menu or footer links; will this hurts? Will too much interlinking of few top pages of a website from it's sub-domains dilute link juice? How many links ideally we can add to website from a sub-domain? Thanks

I want to create a 301 redirect on a WordPress site, nothing's working...
Hello all, I'm hoping someone out there can give me a hand with this. I'm trying to modify my .htaccess file so that the site will go from maxcarnagemusic.com to www.maxcarnagemusic.com and also, so viewers will be redirected to www.maxcarnagemusic.com/home when they try to access the site. I've tried a few different things, including adding the 301 redirect plugin for Wordpress, but nothing seems to work. Can someone out there show/tell me how to create an htaccess file that will execute as much. I apologize in advance, my Apache experience is very, very limited. Thank you all in advance!

Redirecting duplicate pages
For whatever reason, X-cart creates duplicates of our categories and articles so that we have URLs like this www.k9electronics.com/dog-training-collars
Web Design | | k9byron
www.k9electronics.com/dog-training-collars/ or http://www.k9electronics.com/articles/anti-bark-collar
http://www.k9electronics.com/articles/anti-bark-collar/ now our SEO guy says that we dont have to redirect these because google is "smart enough" to know they are the same, and that we should "leave it as-is". However, everything I have read online says that google sees this as dupe content and that we should redirect to one or the other / or no /, depending on which most of our internal links already point to, which is with a slash. What should we do? Redirect or leave it as is? Thanks!0 -
Homepage Menu Change
For the site I work on we would like to make a change on the homepage from having categories on the left nav to a meta menu on the top nav. The reason we are doing this is an attempt to both make finding products better for the customer and we feel it is more aesthetically pleasing. Could this negatively affect our SEO and ranking even if we use the exact same links? Are there any other negative repercussions you feel could come from this? Thanks for any help!

SEO Considerations for a Platform Change
We are getting ready to move our e-commerce platform from Zencart to Magento as the original Zencart framework is pretty dated. while I'm excited to move to a more modern platform, I'm terrified at the potential SEO risk involved with doing so given that all URLs will likely be different and we're considering updating many product listings. Almost all of the site's traffic is organic, so maintaining rankings is extremely important. I'd love any advice, but especially that related to: Best way to redirect all new URLs sitewide The prudence of heavily editing product listings at the same time of redirecting the URL (i.e. updating product descriptions) Site structure: Should I strive to keep the new site link structure as similar to the old as possible? Resources or guides on transitioning a site from a SEO perspective Other major facets I'm missing I appreciate any help or sights you can offer! Thank you....
