Massive decreases in traffic
-
Hi i've been looking at the affects of googles algorithmic updates over the last couple years and the impact on sites/competitors i have been monitoring in the space.
Two sites which surprised me, in having a dramatic decline in search traffic were:
kriskris.com (over 200k visitors to around 10k)
only-cookware.com (from 40k visitors at its peak to only around 1000k)
(semrush traffic data attached)
Both sites have great quality content and social signals.
The only thing i can think of is a over-optimization of anchor text, and types of links.
-
Have you review your backlinks in Open Site Explorer? Some of them look a little fishy, especially the ones for kriskris with the anchor text "lose weight fast" from sights that are mainly in Chinese and also have links to viagra and other such sites (http://www.xshz.com.cn/shownews.asp?id=220 for example).
-
Check out your Google Analytics data and just look at the organic search traffic. Can you pinpoint any major drops? Correlate those dates to known algorithm updates and that should give you a starting point.
If the drops correlate to Apr 24, May 25 or Oct 5 then you're likely dealing with Penguin and the backlinks are your problem.
If they correlate to Panda dates then start looking for duplicate and thin content issues which are the main component of Panda.
I'm guessing this is Panda though. I looked at a couple of your articles on kriskris.com and there are multiple copies across the web. Are these articles originally yours? If not, then you won't be able to rank a site in the age of Panda with duplicated content. If so, are you intentionally syndicating them?
-
Yes your quite right, I would look for other factors for this, have you been losing links, have you picked up any bad links, you could start here by checking : http://www.linkdetox.com/ .
-
If you actually look at the traffic graph from semrush the declines haven't been recent, they have both been in decline since the start of the year. What reasons besides the fact that their backlink profile may be over optimized with exact match anchors, is there for this decline?
The sites have great content, good social media signals (kriskris has over 16,000 followers!) I'm just surprised quality sites like these are getting absolutely slammed.
-
I have seen a very similar issue also, however the last week traffic was beginning to start to climb again only for the new Google update which you can be 100% sure has not finished yet, I think you just have to weather the storm for a little while longer and wait to see where the dice will fall after the completion of the update.
-
For those of us that have not received warnings on WMT, I'd suggest you wait about a week to see if your rankings recover.
There was some sort of small update or change in Google's algorithm and one of my sites dropped 30-40% and just recovered about 20% traffic.
Sometimes these fluctuations happen, don't panic just yet!
-
Those are huge decreases....looks like Google is controlling cash flow into businesses. I just fell from #2 to #5 for my main key term. I will have to start using their PPC.

How does putting a trial sign up code mid-blog post effect SEO? Do you think it will make my content seem less pleasing, therefor decrease the page rank??
I'm working on driving trials for our product - we have a number of blog posts that rank on page #1 of Google, and we get 2-3 trial sign ups per day from them. I'd like to put trial signup boxes about midway down each post to see if I can increase the number of trial signups that come directly from our blog. Do you think I can be "penalized" for this, since it's mid- blog-post content? Do you think Google will view this negatively?

Organic search traffic dropped 40% - what am I missing?
Have a client (ecommerce site with 1,000+ pages) who recently switched to OpenCart from another cart. Their organic search traffic (from Google, Yahoo, and Bing) dropped roughly 40%. Unfortunately, we weren't involved with the site before, so we can only rely on the wayback machine to compare previous to present. I've checked all the common causes of traffic drops and so far I mostly know what's probably not causing the issue. Any suggestions? Some URLs are the same and the rest 301 redirect (note that many of the pages were 404 until a couple weeks after the switch when the client implemented more 301 redirects) They've got an XML sitemap and are well-indexed. The traffic drops hit pretty much across the site, they are not specific to a few pages. The traffic drops are not specific to any one country or language. Traffic drops hit mobile, tablet, and desktop I've done a full site crawl, only 1 404 page and no other significant issues. Site crawl didn't find any pages blocked by nofollow, no index, robots.txt Canonical URLs are good Site has about 20K pages indexed They have some bad backlinks, but I don't think it's backlink-related because Google, Yahoo, and Bing have all dropped. I'm comparing on-page optimization for select pages before and after, and not finding a lot of differences. It does appear that they implemented Schema.org when they launched the new site. Page load speed is good I feel there must be a pretty basic issue here for Google, Yahoo, and Bing to all drop off, but so far I haven't found it. What am I missing?

Big drop in traffic on 18 Oct
Hi mozzers, One of my client’s sites has a big drop in traffic. The site is topdealshotel.com. The drop was in 18 Oct and I know that there weren’t any algo changes. The site has 20+ language versions all optimized properly for all languages. In june I made some big changes in site’s structure and I also changed all URLs. After these new improvements the organic traffic started to grow naturally and very good, but dropped drastically in last 30 days. Unfortunately I couldn’t 301 old URLs into new ones and in WMT at crawl stats I have almost 2 million 404 errors. The site has many hotel pages with content that is from hotelscombined.com, but we also add our own content for all pages. In city pages we have unique content, written by our copywriters. I also made a reconsideration request and there was no manual penalty. I do not have any idea for this drop in traffic. Do you have any suggestions?

Amazing decrease of visits in a Good Content Site
Dear Sirs, contributors and aspirants of Seomoz: I have a site called General History (http://general-history.com/) that was created in 2010, and has a current PR of 3, a DA of 23 and a home page authority of 32. It also has 1.690 links, knowing that we have not invested on link building, all the links were built manually via post inserting or viral via social shares. The thing is that in only 5 months, it passed from receiving 14.000 visits/per month to only 1.500. Is that a decrease of 700% in 5 months? I must admint that I earn my life offering SEO to companies, but this is one of my own sites, a site in which my 73 year old father likes to write about General History. I really think, given that he used to be a journalist, that the content not only isn't spam but it is high quality content. As I had Analytics, I started searching for the cause. The first question was... 1.- From what source did I loose the most amount of visitors? Organic, Paid or Social. The answer is organic by far. As I discovered it was an organic loss, I tried to find what content used to have the most visitors. I found 3 posts that brought 80% of the total traffic. How did the people find the content? Well, some of them found the site in the first page of google when searching for "Holocaust facts and figures" for example, but Analytics says that the most people came from image search in Google Images. General history disappeared from the SERPs but progressively, not from one day to another. So then I thought, It can't be a penalization. I contacted google and send them a reconsideration. 5 days later they answered saying that general-history.com is not a spammy site and thus it has not been penalized. Atentamente, Equipo de Calidad de búsqueda de Google" They say interesting things like it might be other problems that caused my position decrease like: Site content change, content management, server architecture or change or urls. After receiving this, I thought I should get in the admin panel in wordpress and search for bugs, html or css, php errors and I found that somebody had hijacked my site, entering the wordpress panel and adding a code of into one of my landing pages. That page does not exist anymore. I erased completely. The span code was as follows:

General History | General-History General History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-History I thought that would be the problem ! But it was NOT, because Google did not penalize me as you can see in the letter they sent me. I erased the complete page in which the span appeared, I updated my sitemap, re-check my robots.txt, searched my folders via FTP and mucho more... Conclusion? I have no idea why I General-History has lost 700% of its traffic in 5 months.0 -
Declining Organic Traffic despite PR, links and engagement
I have a client site that launched last June and rebranded this February 2012 as http://49thshelf.com The search traffic since Feb has been steadily declining despite some great campaigns to drive traffic and engagement. April down 40% vs. Mar May down 37% Jun down 51% Jul 16% We have a couple of challenges. The site is the only collection of Canadian-authored titles. It's like an Amazon of only Canadian titles. But it's not ecommerce, we direct traffic to other vendors like Amazon or the publisher to buy. We have 40,000 unique products on the site and the descriptions are primarily supplied by the publishers, which means it's the same content on the publisher site as Goodreads, Amazon and anyone else they share data with. Those big players like Amazon and Goodreads use user generated content to alter the descriptions but we don't have that level of activity on the site. Members create reading lists, the editorial staff curate collections on the homepage and there are interviews, blog posts and guest posts. No black hat SEO, no bad links that I can see. Great organic membership growth and interactions. Good activity from social media sites to the site. Good, trusted links from news sites and legit blogs. I don't know what to do to improve the organic traffic. July is the first month that we haven't seen 40-50% drops. Any advice is welcome, thank you!

Can Location Information Decrease National Search Volume ?
Has anyone observed the effect on G organic traffic when a site which has little or no location information suddenly registers with the reputable "local" directories? I am especially curious about results observations based upon G's behavior during the past several months. It might be a hosting problem (the host is performing some non-routine mantenance) or possibly even a HUGE change in G's algo but I've observed a huge drop in my traffic after claiming a couple of the local listings earlier this week. Until then, I doubt G had associated my site with my city. A couple of other explanations are possible but the timing leaves me to doubt it's a coincidence. T.I.A.
