SEO value in baclklink from blog.domain VS domain
-
Will a back-link from "domain.com/abc" and "blog.domain.com/abc" have same value from an SEO perspective? Assume same article written on both sites.
I have been told the bots look at the domain value and the only links from blogs that have less value are in case of comments. As long as the "blog.domain/abc" page includes a full article and not a blog comment then it counts fully for SEO. Is this correct? -
You've got the basics, Kristian.
If a page is on a strong domain, it will inherit some of that domain authority to the page. So if two pages are equal, but one is on a stronger domain (or stronger subdomain) the one on the stronger domain will likely rank higher and have more "juice" to send when it links out to other pages.
There are many examples of blog subdomains that are actually stronger than their parent domains because that's where the site owner is investing most of their attention and effort.
So... bottom line is... just because pages are on a blog subdomain doesn't mean they are necessarily worth less just because they're on a subdomain. Each has to be assessed individually for value, just like with the primary domains.
Consider this: blogging sites like Typepad and WordPress.com all have their users' site on subdomains, yet huge numbers of those subdomain-based blogs rank really well and are very high authority.
So assess a blog page on a subdomain as you would any other page. If it's related to your niche and a connection makes sense form a user's perspective, it's a reasonable target from which to earn a link.
Hope that helps;
Paul

thank you, Paul. Good answer. Let me make sure I understand correctly: if I get a backlink from "blog.domain/abc" or from "domain.com/abc" that would have exactly same impact and link juice assuming the page "abc" in both cases have same page authority (let us just say it is a brand new page with PA 1) - is that correctly understood?
When I go to OpenSiteExplorer and enters "blog.domain.com" or simply "domain.com" - in both cases the domain authority is the same, though I thought it would normally be different since domain authority will refer to the sub-domain "blog".
If you can share a few thoughts that would be appreciated

There's nothing intrinsic about a blog that would cause links from it to have any less value than from a "regular" web page, Kristian. In fact, there's no way for a search engine to devalue a "blog" page because there's no definition of such a thing.
However... in the example you gave above, the blog would be considered a completely separate site from the primary domain site. This means that it is quite possible the blog site doesn't have as much domain authority as the primary domain, so links from it also wouldn't provide as much "juice." (Depends entirely on the specific situation and the difference between blog (subdomain) & main domain authority must be assessed on a case by case basis)
So it's not that the blog's links might carry less weight because it's a blog, but because it's pretty much a standalone site and must earn its own authority separate from the main site . The same is true for any subdomain-based sites, not just blogs.
Make sense?
Paul

Negative SEO impact of two Similar Domains on Same IP
Our ecommerce company has acquired a former competitor which has similar content & largely sells the same set of products. Both domains run on the same ecommerce platform version and do well organically on an overlapping set of keywords. Currently the websites are separate instances which are hosted separately. There is no interlinking or cross branding between the sites. Since each brand has strong equity & SEO, there are no plans to combine brands or domains. For several reasons, it would be ideal to combine platform instances and hosting, but we are concerned about potential SEO impact of shared IP addresses. Is it likely that moving the sites to the same IP/C-Block could have a negative SEO impact since they rank on the same keywords. Would Google devalue one site if they were seen to be connected or owned by the same company? I know this issue has been addressed for domains with more variance between products and content, but since there is a large overlap (but not duplicate content) between our two domains, we wanted additional insight. Obviously there are other SEO factors when you move a site, but we are currently trying to understand this specific factor. Thanks Community for your help! -Amber

Single domain or a subfolder?
One of my clients is wondering whether they should move they stand alone business website to a subfolder of their brand website. For example, from http://www.johnlewisforbusiness.com to http://www.johnlewis.com/business. Do you guys think it's a good idea from SEO point of view? Can you recommend any articles on this? What is the expected loss of current value by changing domain and migrating URLs?

Sub-domain or not???
Hi, We're setting up a forum for our users (our target audience responds extremely well to forums). I was wondering if it should be set up on a sub-domain or not. I'm leaning towards sub-domain, but our devs say this will impact how they approach it so I'd like to give them an answer asap so we can proceed with planning it! Thanks, Amelia

Age of a re-directed domain same as age of a static domain?
I know domain age plays a role in SEO--but, I am wondering if a domain is set up to 301 re-direct to another domain if it builds the same amount of authority over time as the static domain--just looking at age as a ranking factor, not links accumulated over time.

Domain registered with US provider; hosted with UK - SEO effects?
My boss wants me to register a domain with a US company. However, most of our customers are in the UK. Though I would host any future website using a UK hosting provider, I don't know if registering the domain with a US provider would make any difference SEO-wise?

Multi domain redirect to single domain
Hello, all SEOers. Today, I would like to get some ideas about handling multiple domains. I have a client who bought numerous domains under purpose of prevent abuse of their brand name and at the same time for future uses. This client bought more than 100 domains. Some domains are paused, parked, lived and redirected to other site. I don't worry too much of parked domains and paused domains. However, what I am worrying is that there are about 40 different domains are now redirected to single domain and meta refresh was used for redirections. As far as I know, this can raise red flag for Google. I asked clients to clean up unnecessary domains, yet they want to keep them all. So now I have to figure out how to handle all domains which are redirect to single domain. So far, I came up with following ideas. 1. Build gateway page which shows lists of my client sites and redirect all domains to gateway page. 2. Implement robots.txt file to all different domains 3. Delete the redirects and leave it as parked domains. Could anyone can share other ideas in order to handling current status? Please people, share your ideas for me.
