Risk of hosting website on internal application server

This isn't really related to SEO, but it came up with a client....
We have a client that is hosting their website internally. That's not a problem except that the server it is hosted on is the same server where they host many secure applications with sensitive customer information.
We recommended to the marketing vp to move the website to a different server that doesn't host secure apps so we don't have be concerned about any conflicts. Their IT folks pushed back. So, I'm looking for some ammunition to support our recommendation.
Any ideas?

Just in case the question of site hosting is still under discussion, Bernie, I'd say you're absolutely right to be concerned about the website being hosted on the same server as sensitive client data. This is assuming they are actually hosting the website on the same operating system as the other apps.
This situation is EXACTLY what Virtual Servers have been invented for. They allow complete separation of different server instances, several of which can hosted on the same physical server hardware at the same time (so one piece of hardware can actually host several virtual servers).
The security aspect of this is huge. The harm that would come to the company if they had to disclose their client data had been hacked vastly outweighs the little bit of extra effort to maintain an additional virtual server for website hosting.
On a purely practical basis, the reality is that webservers often run into load issues, glitches, urgent security patches etc that require the server to be rebooted. This is far more likely to happen to webservers than application servers. There's no reason why these reboots should have to take down the other client apps in the process.
I've known companies running all on one server to avoid implementing patches because they were afraid the patches might break custom apps. As a result, the unpatched website got hacked, causing massive downtime for both website and apps.
So yea - if they're running everything under one server instance, they're begging for trouble (and breaking industry best practices).
If they're running all on one server but with the apps and website on different virtual servers (sometimes called virtual machines) they're fine.

Hi Paul,
Sorry for the tardy response. I don't actually know if the client is hosting the website on the same bank of servers as their client apps. Their website is https and they host it internally. Our contact is the marketing director and she has not been able to answer this question for us.

Bernie, when you say they are hosted on the same server - do you mean hosted on the same physical hardware but on separate virtualized server instances? Or are they actually running on and sharing the same OS install?

Google not showing my website ?
The website is medicare.md. if you search for term "medicare doctors PG county maryland" it is #1 in bing and yahoo but not even showing on google.com first TEN pages, although not banned. SEO Terms for Internal Vs External
Hey there! I am writing up an SEO plan for our company and wanted to get the groups input on the use of some SEO terms. I need to organize and explain these efforts to nonSEO people. I usually talk about, SEO in terms of "Internal" vs "External" efforts. Internal SEO efforts being things like Title Tags, Description Tags, Page Speed, Minimizing errors, proper 301 redirect, content development for the site, internal linking and anchor, etc. External SEO efforts being things like Link building, social media profile setups and posts (FB Twitter Pinterest, YouTube), PR work. How do you split these out? What terms do you use? Do you subdivide these tasks? What terms do you use? For example, with Internal, I sometimes talk about "Technical SEO" that has do to with making sure that site speed is working well, 301s are setup correctly, noindex tag etc are all used properly. These are things that different versus "On Page" efforts to use keywords properly etc. I will also use the term "Site Visibility" for non SEOs to explain the technical impact. For example, if your site has the wrong robots.txt, if you have 500 errors everywhere and a slow site, if you are sending spiders down a daisy chain of 301s, it is difficult for the key parts of your site to be found and so your "Visibility" to the engines are poor. You have to get your visibility up, before you begin to then worry about if you have the right keywords on a page etc. Any input or references would be appreciated.

Transfer of website to maintain SEO
I am nearly finished building a new wordpress website to replace the old static HTML site which is currently doing very well in SERPs. My old site is currently hosted by a company who owns the site, my domain is registered with a different company and I have the nameservers pointed at Cloudflare. I have built my new site and have it hosted with a different company and I wish to keep the domain name registered with the company it is currently with.Is there an order that I should follow to move from the old site to the new site using my current domain name so that I minimize any impact on SEO. I built the new site with the same URL structure to maintain linking benefit. thanks

Does server location matter?
Hi guys, A friend's website is hosted in Germany (showing German IP in Flagfox) but it is a UK-based local business that only serves customers within a small radius covering 3 medium sized UK towns (they sell heavy construction materials for collection only). Should I advise him to change hosting location to the UK? Will this help him rank better for regional keyword searches & Google Places? He has some 'followed' links from UK sites (over 6 months old) that are not being picked up by Majestic, OSE or Webmaster Tools - is this likely to be connected to the server location? Thanks in advance for any help!

How long to come back from a server outage?
We changed hosting companies two weeks ago, and we had a number of configuration issues that caused the site to go on and offline over that weekend. We fixed the problem but our traffic took a noticeable hit. I am assuming this is because our rankings dropped due to the site being down. Now that we're stable again, how long will it take for the traffic to return? is there anything I can do to speed up the process?

Internal website search
Hi, I'd like to index dynamically generated - internal website search pages - to Google. A mod rewrite to make the URL strings friendlier might be one way, but as these pages are created on the fly and effectively don't exist till the search keywords are inputted, is it even possible to index them? thanks
