Is it me or is SEOMOZ Q&A slow
-
I try and answer many questions here on SEOMoz Q&A, but the page load speed seems so slow I think my browser is going to time out.
I don't remember it being this slow. Anybody else noticing slow loading (especially when asking, answering, or replying to questions)?
-
Everyone should be noticing the performance improvements by now. Early Wednesday morning we rolled out an update that has helped things considerably. If you find any bugs or odd happenings, please either send an email to help@seomoz.org or chime in on the thread about the update at http://www.seomoz.org/q/q-a-performance-improvements. Thanks so much for your patience!
-
Woohoo! Now, let's try to keep it that fast.
-
It does seem faster. I'll post this and report how long it took compared to my 2 min 45 second time previously.
10 seconds...much better.
-
Ok we've restarted a few services and are seeing request times dropping quite a bit. I'm using this response as a test to see if it takes less time to post.
Thanks everyone for your patience and for caring enough to start & comment on this thread.
-
Yikes! I'm so, so sorry about this. We've just sent a "red alert" to the engineering team asking for them to dig deeper into the problem. This is definitely unacceptable for things to be running this slowly.
As Keri mentioned, we are working on a better solution long-term which should go up in a couple weeks. But we'll get on this ASAP to get things running better in the interim.
-
I'll; be the 1st to admit, I'm not answering anymore Q&As for a couple more weeks until they fix their "everything is fine on our end" server.
Laters!!!
-
It's definitely slow for me too. The slowest part is waiting for my answer to post after I hit "post response". It's gotten to the point where I click the button, then I go and do something else and then come back later.
But, I spoke with another SEOMoz member who said everything is running well for him. Strange?
I'm sure you guys are working on a solution...must be frustrating! But I'd definitely make it a priority because you're likely losing users who aren't patient.
EDIT: I just timed how long it took for my response to register and it was 2 mins 45 seconds!
-
Sorry, Keri - I hope participating in 160+ questions over the last 8 months shows my commitment to SEOMoz and the community and that I'm not just trying to be a dick, but that answer just doesn't make sense.
"General slowdown" just doesn't adequately explain needing 29 seconds to post a simple couple of kb's worth of a comment.
I'm hoping the following diagnostics might help narrow down the source of the issue. Apologies if these items have already been noted.
The front page of SEOMoz has a time-to-first-byte (i.e the backend server processing) of 0.251 seconds. Pretty normal.
The Q&A pages last night after 11 pm (i.e. what I would assume is a very low usage time for the site) had time-to-first-byte ranging from 10 seconds to over 38 seconds!! For the times it didn't time out altogether. That's 40X to a bazillionX too long.
- Q&A 10 seconds time-to-first-byte - http://www.webpagetest.org/result/130215_PC_58K/1/details/ (Optimal is under 0.5 sec)
- Q&A 38.7! seconds time-to-first-byte http://www.webpagetest.org/result/130215_0Y_5SZ/ (Optimal is under 0.5 sec)
- home page 0.251 seconds time-to-first-byte http://www.webpagetest.org/result/130216_X9_8BR/
The site then finishes loading fairly consistently in another 2 to 3 seconds.
This tells me there is a pretty severe server or database issue. (Just tried re-running the Q&A test and it timed out on first attempt & over 28 seconds to load on second try at 10:45pm MT))
I'm not expert enough in either of those areas to try to diagnose by remote, but I know I'd never accept my or a client's site with those kinds of load times or times to post a comment and leave them with the explanation that it's just "general slowdown". Certainly not while multiple users are telling me it's making one of the prime areas of the site almost unusable.
Your tech team needs to dig deeper, Keri. There's more at issue here than just general slowness and it's reflecting badly on SEOMoz and I hate to see that happen.

All I know is if my clients' websites were as slow as SEOmoz's Q&A, they would all be out of business.
-
Paul,
I'm so sorry that "general slowness" came across as a pretty silly response but it is the honest truth.
I was working on some things for the transition with the manager for the transition project, and we both saw how slow things were. She looked at the status monitors for the system, and there was not one major thing that had failed where we could say "ok, it is process X that is not responding, if we restart that then everything will be better".
Things in general are running slowly. No, we're not happy with it. We know that it's a pain. We are monitoring to make sure there aren't specific failures that happen that compound the current problems, and we are doing final testing on the upgrades to make sure they will have the performance and stability we all desire.
Keri

Been like this for me for the last few weeks.
-
See this questions from yesterday, Francisco.
http://www.seomoz.org/q/are-others-having-problems-with-upload-speed-at-mozIt's getting brutal.
Unfortunately SEOMoz is saying it's just "general slowness" which is a pretty silly response.
Doesn't look like they plan to do anything about it until some Q&A upgrades come out in a couple of weeks.
Disappointed;
Paul

This has been happening for days. So not just regular molasses, but cold molasses. LOL. That's pretty darn slow.
-
I don't think it's just you. It's moving like cold molasses on my end.

Losing Rankings & Need Help
Hi Guys, I am not sure if anyone else is suffering from the July 4, 2013 update. I know many of us are awaiting to see what happens once the dust settles. I have a couple of issues/questions/statements below. This is the first time any Google update has every affected me negatively and I'd love some ideas or input. 1. I have ranked quite well for nearly 10 years for all my top keywords. Now, after this update, I am disappearing for my top keywords in the SERPS - definitely getting pushed to page two, etc. Can anyone help me discover the reasons? I have a great SEO expert helping me and I know quite a bit, but this has me baffled. My website is Journey Beyond Travel.com I have read MOZ's ranking factors for 2013 and also the recently published report from SearchMetrics. In the last few days, I've added more quality text to the homepage and shortened my page title on the homepage (although Google has been changing my homepage browser title to put my brand name first in the title - and they haven't for my competitors). Over the past few months, I've really cleaned up my link profile to the best of my ability. I've never really taken part in any negative or black-hat practices. I am trying to get more links that use my 'brand' name rather than exact anchor text. I believe I have a natural profile - any thoughts? 2. One thing I notice is the higher ranking of larger brands now (at least in my field). Just because a domain with higher authority creates one page of content, how can that outrank me? I mean, I've got ten years and 600+ darn good articles of content on my website. How can one domain that is very 'general' (for example, well known in the world of travel and not specialized or niche like mine) outrank me? How can it be that Google allows larger brands to outrank smaller ones just because they have more backlinks and domain authority, but no real content to support these pages? Is content truly king? I am thinking about an article: "Google, Brands, and the Death of Small Business Online." Anyone wish to collaborate here? I am not being hatelful or resentful, but I foresee the day when an 'alternative' search engine emerges, doesn't allow crap ads, allows users more flexibility, and brings search to the next level. Not all of us want the big brands and are searching for alternatives that stand out. I ignore them when I am searching mostly. Any thoughts or elaborations? Thanks!

Is there anything SEMRush Guru or Enterprise level has that I can't do with SEOMoz Pro?
Okay fellow in-house SEOs, I need some advice please. We are considering an upgrade from SEOMoz Pro to Pro Elite. For a business our size, this is a major investment. I need some compelling reasons why we should go with this upgrade in lieu of simply adding an upgraded membership at SEMRush. Aside from more keywords tracked and more pages crawled (We only have about 5,000 pages, so I'm not sure more pages crawled is even something we need). Right now, it seems the only benefit to us would be the ability to track 2500 more keywords. We don't need more campaigns and we don't need more pages crawled. An extra $300/month is a lot to pay just for the sole benefit of adding more keywords. The reason we are considering this is because we have 6-7 product lines that are all quite different from each other, different keywords, different competitors. All of these products lines are enormously competitive, so of course we want to track each (with competitors) separately so that when I build a Ranking Index (which I learned how to do beautifull thanks to this post by AJ Kohn a few days ago), that my Ranking Index is a truer picture of how we are doing for keywords related to specific product lines, against the right specific competitors. Because of the keyword limitations in SEOMoz Pro (1,000 max), we can't come close to covering everything. Is increasing our level at SEOMoz really the best, most affordable option to do what we want to do? I realize I might get some bias here, but we are really trying to research cost-effective options, as $4,790 is a huge investment for us. Thoughts?

Tried to find correlation between SEOMOZ statistic and google ranking.
I've made Google US search and than tried to compare SEOMOZ data for first few result. I've used Open Site Explorer and On-Page Report Card. On attached picture you can find this statistic. Pages are sorted in order as they appear in Google search. For me is big question why position 2 and 4 is so hight and 6 is only 6. And what position 6 should do to go up. Thank you. 2s9zlu8.jpg

Getting your site totally indexed by SEOMOZ
Hi guys! Ijust started using SEOMOZ software and wondered how it could be that my site has over 10.000 pages but in the Pro Dashboard it only indexed about 1500 of them. I've been waiting a few weeks now but the number has been stable ever since. Is there a way to get the whole site indexed by SEOMoz software? Thanks for your answers!

FF SEOMoz toolbar issue
I sent the email below to help@seomoz.org on the 12th April and haven't heard anything back so thought I'd fire it up here in case someone has a solution for me... "For the past month or so I've had an issue in Firefox where my SEOmoz toolbar appears to not sign me in, or allow me to sign in. All metrics are 0 for all websites/pages and if I click the login button, nothing happens at all. If I click the Quick Links button the drop down menu appears but whichever option from the drop down I choose, nothing happens. I'm funning Firefox 11.0 and have attached a screen grab of the bar as it appears no matter where I browse.

Do you have any suggestions how I can get it working again? It works fine in Chrome but I primarily use Firefox..." UNRMw.jpg0 -
Recommended Q&A Software
So I just read an SEOMoz post about the great SEO benefits of Question and Answer sites (or sections of sites) - much like the Q&A section I'm in right now. 🙂 I did some googling and haven't really found a good software for implementing (installing, skinning, integrating, etc.) a Q&A section on my website. There are a few out there, but they are pretty basic, nothing like this site or Yahoo Answers. Anyone know of good software (i'm on a PHP server) to implement Q&A on my site? Something that has the look and feel of this site or answers.yahoo.com, etc.? Thanks for the help!

SEOMOZ tools are not helping!
So, I have a website www.mobikwik.com which provides mobile phone topup in India. I signed up for SEOMOZ Pro membership a little less than a month ago. For all our competitors , which rank above us in google as of today , I checked out two things a) competitive link analysis and b) on-page optimization. On b) , our home page had the best optimization for targeted keywords and the best score amongst all competitors who ranked above us. On a) , linkscape tools showed our moztrust and mozrank to be the best. Except for 2 competitors, our domain authority was also better than the rest. Inspite of all this, our website is ranked no more than 6 on google for all targeted keywords. We have the best quality links amongst our competitors. I am at a loss to understand this and how to improve our ranking. I have to make a decision whether to renew my SEOMOZ membership in 2 days time. Please help me decide!

SEOmoz toolbar log in chrome wonky!
In Chrome, I'll start off not logged in to the toolbar. I'll click log in which forwards me to the SEOmoz login page. I'll login. Sometimes the toolbar will reflect this login and the metrics will poplulate in the PA and DA, other times it won't. If I navigate to another page within the same tab, it may show metrics still, but it is also just as likely to show that I'm not logged in. If I open a new tab, the toolbar will show that I'm not logged in. I click the log in again but when directed to SEOmoz, it'll show that I'm already logged in. I haven't been able to pinpoint exactly when it'll work and when it won't. Seems a bit random, so am wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue and has been able to solve this logged in / not logged in problem. As a note, anytime I navigate back to the SEOmoz site, whether by opening a new tab or a new window, the SEOmoz site does show I'm logged in, while the toolbar shows I'm not. You can see a demonstration of the simultaneous logged in SEOmoz site and logged out SEOmoz toolbar in the attached screen shot. UPDATE Also having similar issues in firefox. Am wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that I changed my email address within the past few weeks. KQXxN.gif
