Same product in Multiple categories ecommerce store, best way to avoid duplicate content?
-
Hello All,
Im building a magento store, with around 500 products.
One thing is that I am going to have some products in Multiple categories. Do you think the best solution is to remove any category name from the url structure or would this devalue SEO?
Also would the use of canonical links remove any duplicate content issues if the category name was left in.
So overall what would get better results
No category name in URL (e.g.phonename-model1.html)
V
category name in url (e.g. phones/phonename-model1.html / videophones/phonename-model1.html +using canonical links
Any feedback or views would be great

Hi David,
We have always had better results doing it the first way.
We still do use categorical directory structures - and use these for list views or category sectional pages -
For example:
domain.com/online-desserts/cheesecakes/chocolate-cheesecakes.html
could list all the Chocolate Cheesecakes that the eCommerce store has on offer. Say you have five of these tasty products - they would all then have links to their individual product detail pages from this list view category page.
domain.com/online-desserts/gifts/mothers-day-dessert-gifts.html
could list all the dessert ideas grouped together for Mothers Day for the same store.
But one product that was on both would then link to:
domain.com/online-desserts/store/mothers-day-choc-surprise-cheesecake.html or
domain.com/online-desserts/store/mothers-day-choc-surprise-cheesecake-xxxx.html depending on how you have your cart system setup. We try to do implementations where it doesn't need a variable at all int he url - but that the individual product urls can be given by the admin and must be unique obviously.
I think your second option would work - just giving our opinion based on past projects in terms of what has worked best for us. I think the second route may have more challenges also. Which would you make the canonical ref? Would this then also have to be done each time by the admin. Would be automated or manual ? If manual using the back office on the product level - it may require the admin having more knowledge of SEO - so if it was you being the administrator then it may be ok.... but if you are building it for a client and for them to administer it - I think it will require more knowledge on their part.
Let me know David if this helps at all or if I didnt understand your question correctly.
Thanks,
Carlos

Best way to handle Breadcrumbs for Blog Posts in multiple categories?
The site in question uses Wordpress. They have a Resources section that is broken into two categories (A or B). Underneath each of these categories is 5 or 6 subcategories. The structure looks like this: /p/main-category-a/subcategory/blog-post-name /p/main-category-b/subcategory/blog-post-name All posts have a main category, but other posts often have multiple subcategories while some posts also fall into both main categories. What would be the easiest or most effective way to auto-populate the breadcrumb based on from where the person reached the blog post? So for example, a way to set Home -> Main Category -> Subcategory 1 as the breadcrumb if they reach it from the Subcategory 1 landing page. Or is this not possible and we should just set the breadcrumb manually based on where we feel it best lives? Thanks.

Purchasing duplicate content
Morning all, I have a client who is planning to expand their product range (online dictionary sites) to new markets and are considering the acquisition of data sets from low ranked competitors to supplement their own original data. They are quite large content sets and would mean a very high percentage of the site (hosted on a new sub domain) would be made up of duplicate content. Just to clarify, the competitor's content would stay online as well. I need to lay out the pros and cons of taking this approach so that they can move forward knowing the full facts. As I see it, this approach would mean forgoing ranking for most of the site and would need a heavy dose of original content as well as supplementing the data on page to build around the data. My main concern would be that launching with this level of duplicate data would end up damaging the authority of the site and subsequently the overall domain. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Best way to host new product?
Hi guys We are launching a new product, the web pages are being built by a 3rd party and fall outside our current CMS. We're considering either hosting it on 1) sub domain 2) folder within existing site (although will be tricky to implement) or 3) a different URL altogether. What would you say is the best for SEO? Many thanks in advance.... Nigel

How to prevent duplicate content in archives?
My news site has a number of excerpts in the form of archives based on categories that is causing duplicate content problems. Here's an example with the nutrition archive. The articles here are already posts, so it creates the duplicate content. Should I nofollow/noindex this category page along with the rest and 2011,2012 archives etc (see archives here)? Thanks so much for any input!

Paging Links Code - Best Way?
Currently we are using previous 1 2 3 next for our link to other inventory pages, with some variation of this javascript code javascript:__doPostBack('ctl00$phMain$dlPagesTop$ctl01$lnkPageTop','') . Can search engines even index the other pages with this javascript? Is there a better way to do this?

E-Commerce Duplicate Content
Hello all We have an e-commerce website with approximately 3,000 products. Many of the products are displayed in multiple categories which in turn generates a different URL! 😞 Accross the entire site I have noticed that the product pages are always outranked by competitors who have lower page authority, domain authority, total links etc etc. I am convinced this is down to duplicate content issues. I understand there is no direct penalty but how would this affect our rankings? Is page rank split between all the duplicates, which in turn lowers it's ranking potential? I have looked for a way to identify duplicate content using Google analytics but i've been unsuccessful. If the duplicate content is the issue and page rank is divided am i best using canonical or 301 redirects? Sorry if this is an obvious question but If i'm correct we could see a huge improvement in rankings accross the board. Wow! Cheers Todd
