How can I tell Google two sites are non-competing?
-
We have two sites, both English language. One is a .ca and the other is a .com, I am worried that they are hurting one another in the search results. I'd like to obviously direct google.ca towards the .ca domain and .com towards the .com domain and let Google know they are connected sites, non-competing.

The solution in the implementation of the rel="alternate" hreflang, as explained by Google here:

Do you know of a better way for a company to do this? The content essentially has to be identical, but at the same time the shipping policies, pricing etc. has to be different because one is only for Canadian residents and one is only for American.
-
is the content the same because if so google will filter one out as duplicate content. Definitely geo target and add language / location meta tags on each site globally. If the CA site has a CA address that would help a lot too, you can submit each site in Google places / + and verify the addresses as being with that country address location.
you don't want to tell Google you own two sites with the same content targeting the same keywords.
-
The problem is they are the same company, selling the same products. Just the different Canadian and American pricing, slightly different information etc. So the sites are very similar. I'm worried that one (or both) are being penalized for this. Is there anyway I can tell Google they are the same company so it is ok that they are nearly identical? For example I wouldn't care if the .ca domain never appeared in Google.com and would never care if the .com Domain never appeared in google.ca.
Or is there a better way to handle this?

geo target different regions so Google knows to show .com in google.com and .ca in google.ca (although they already know because of the .ca domain.
you don't want google to know they are connected sites though. keep them as separate as possible.

Google Search Analytics desktop site to losing page position compared to the mobile version of the site
Looking at Google Search Analytics page position by device. The desktop version has seen a dramatic drop in the last 60 days compared to the mobile site. Could this be caused by mobile first indexing? Has Google had any releases that might have caused this?

Google Custom Search Engine: Good Idea?
I created a Google Custom Search Engine for our site, but I"m not sure implementing it is a good idea. When I tested it with the public URL, I noticed that ads show up on the search engine that could potentially move visitors away from our site to our competitors. Has anyone had success with implementing a Google Custom Search Engine? Do the pros outweigh the cons? Thanks, Ruben

Https & Google Updated Guidelines
Hi We have https on aspects of the site which users directly interact with, such as login, basket page. But we don't have https across the whole site. In light of Google adding it to their guidelines - is this something we need to put into action? Also same question on the Accessibility point Ensure that your pages are useful for readers with visual impairments, for example, by testing usability with a screen-reader. Are we going to be penalised if these are not added to our site? Thank you

Am I the only one experiencing this Google SERP problem?
I perform Google searches every single day, sometimes several times in a day. These searches have nothing to do with being a marketer--they're simply as a consumer, researcher, person who needs a question answered, or in other words: a typical person. For about the past month or so, I have been unsuccessful at finding what I'm looking for on the first try EVERY SINGLE TIME. Yes, I mean it--every single time. I'm left either going all the way to the third page, clicking dozens of results and retuning to the SERPs, or having to start over with a differently worded query. This is far too often to be a coincidence. Has this been happening to anymore else? I know there was a recent significant algorithm update, right? I always look at algorithm updates through the eyes of an SEO, but I'm currently looking at it through the eyes for an average searcher, and I'm frustrated! It's been like trying to find something on Bing!

Accidently blocked our site for an evening?
Yesterday at about 5pm I switched our site to a new server and accidentally blocked our site from google for the evening. our domain is posnation.com and we are ranked in the top 3 in almost all pos related keywords. When i got in this morning i realized the mistake and went to google web tools and noticed the site was blocked so i went to fetch as google bot and corrected that. Now the message says: Check to see that your robots.txt is working as expected. (Any changes you make to the robots.txt content below will not be saved.)

http://www.posnation.com/robots.txt 1 hours ago 200 (Success) When you go to google and type "pos systems" we are still #2 so i assume all is still ok. My question is will this potentially hurt our rankings and should i be worried and is there anything else I can do.0
