Diverse SEO On & Off page questions!
-
Hey everybody. I have been reading several resources on SEO, and wanted to know your opinion on these topics. I know they are diverse and should be on a different set of questions, but i wanted to give it a try.
I run a Heavily Specialized Steel B2B eCommerce Site. So my question would be what is the importance of the following topics, taking into mind the nature of my site.
- The importance on how often the page is updated ? Recommendations on updating relatively static pages ?
- How important is to meet HTML and W3C Standards, also its validation.
- The NoFollow and Follow ratio of incoming links.
- Your opinion onthe inclusion of outbound links to other relevant pages. Is there a best practice?
Any comment is welcome, and would be deeply appreciated.
Regards,

Could you comment on what kind of updates did you made?
Did you updated the Home Page, Categories, Products Page? Do you think it makes a difference? I have a B2B Commerce site so i find somewhat difficult to update and change content.
Best Regards,
Thanks!

I have to disagree with Glenn on the update frequency. I update at least one page a day on my website. When I went on holiday for a few weeks, my colleagues took over all search marketing activity, except page updates. In the two weeks I was away, we slid down the search marketing rankings. In every other instance we have climbed the search marketing rankings.
Nofollow links have no value as far as Google is concerned, so focus on followed links. That said, I get a lot of traffic from Nofollow links on popular web pages - so if the site only offers nofollow links, but is authoritative, it's good for your site, if not your SRO strategy.
Re outbound links, make sure they open in a new window so they don't take visitors off your website. I include outbound links where they add value to the post.
I hope this helps!

For small industrial B2Bs, I haven't seen update frequency make a difference. Pages may hold their ranks for a long time, affected only by competitive actions or Google updates. Not sure this is true for B2C tho.
I don't think Google incorporates validation into it's ranking signals yet. Other opinions ?
I never pay attention to nofollow / dofollow ratios, only to the number of dofollow links. However, I do think a natural looking profile should include both. Also, generally, I think most industrial B2Bs are comfortable with providing links to vendors, etc. where it is helpful to the customer, so again, having no outbound links (especially for a relatively large site) may make the profile look unnatural.

How to safeguard against negative SEO for new sites?
Hi Mozers!! I have a question. The ugly tools for blog commenting etc are still out there, my question is what if your competitor notices you that you are new to the business and they start building 20,000+ backlinks to your new site, and they too with one exact match anchor text that you are targeting. I know we can disavow tool, but I guess that would be too late? What are your thoughts? What will be the solution the above case scenario?

How to work with directories for SEO?
Hi, How many directory links do you tend to build in 1 month? And what do you look for in a directories before you submit? I could build 2 links a day from directories but the thought of 60 links being built a month from directories shouts bad news to me. I've had a look and come across a few directories with high DA/PA but at the end of the day they are just link directories, no content, lots of thin pages with lots of links pointing out. A couple of examples of good directories would help. Cheers

Why my page is not in top 50 already?
I started building links about a month ago for a new, 48% difficulty (according to Keyword analysis) keyword. The on-site optimisation is OK I think, the URL is an A grade (with maximum points, only 1-2 low importance factors missing). I trust my team I work with as they already ranked my site for several keywords in the top 5 positions (only manual linkbuilding). I do not expect top 10 results, but my page did not show up even in the top 50. Furthermore, there are a lot of tiny and weak pages in the top 50. I started campaigns for some other keywords at the same time with this and those are already around 15-20. So is there anything I should check? I am worried I am doing something wrong.

Parameter In URL passing SEO Value
Helllo I need help understanding the following scenario. We do campaign tracking for number of our sites using urt parameters. These are normally PR links with utm parameters. I am not sure if we should remove the utm parameter and forget about tracking the links completely if it offers an added SEO value with direct links OR we just keep using utm parameters for PR tracking and use canonical tag instead on respective pages. For me SEO value is most important. But i am trying to understand what i am losing or gaining. Kindly sugggest Thanks

Ever Get disillusioned with SEO
Many times now we have pushed certain keywords for homepage listings but we have found the traffic levels to be very poor and many cases first page listings turn out to be vanity. The frustrating thing is that sometimes we have to tell some of our SEO customers that in order to get a good market share for there industry they will always have to do google adwords. What are your thoughts on this . Thanks
